Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Ho Mei,directly translated, means friendly and beautiful. Ho Mei is located at the northwest part of Chang Hua County; it has a population of 90'000. In early days, industries of spin, weave and umbrella manufacturing brought prosperity.

He Mei town is proud of Tao Tung academy, the national second-class historic spot. Architectural style is influenced by Chinese traditional conceptions, those are geomantic and decoration of mascots. Sculptures, patterns and steles are reposited very completely. It has a meaning of culture, so it is a treasure-house in Ho Mei town.

2. Summary of Our Project

Our name is” Tau Tung e-artist”.We research the tradition and the of architectural and artistic beauty of Tau Tung academy from a historic viewpoint. We introduce the present situation of Tau Tung academy and educational function it brings, and go a step further to explore the community's great expectations. We hope that more people can concern with it and appreciate its elegance.

We proceed to research by collecting information, interview on the spot, personages’ interview and questionnaire, and we also combine art with humane course for other students in our school to join the description of the hope in the future. We hope that Tau Tung academy can bring the educational function,to help make the world better, friendlier and safer, which have deep and modern meanings of times .

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:1

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:1

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

Internet environment in school: our school connects externally by two T1 network wires. There are two computer classrooms in our school and each classroom has 40 computers. Every office has at least 1 computer, providing us the convenience to discuss, look up in convenience to discuss, look up information and print papers.

Internet environment in teachers’ home: we set up a website in Mr. Lee’s home to provide web and ftp functions. Internet environment in team members’ home: all team members have a computer at home. After school we send information and messages by e-mail and network hard discs.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

It is hard to get old photos and information: because of a long neglected and closing period in Tao Tung academy, many antiquities and historic information were gone at that time. Relying on teachers’ conduct and schoolmates’ exertion, we contact with many people who understand the academy well, use Internet search tools, and finally we have found what we want.

It is not easy to make an arrangement of research and discussion schedule: To avoid influencing schoolwork, we have to do research and interview in the self-study class and lunch break. In the final stage some typewrite at home, some make Web. Everybody make full use of convenience of computer technology. We connect each other by e-mail and message block, transfer information by network hard disc and reach the maximum “division of labor and cooperation”.

It is more difficult to make Web. Parts of hard technique, we ask for teachers, who have a special skill in computer to guide and help.

There is a lot of new knowledge we have never touched. Face to the new knowledge excluding textbook, we overcome it by teachers’ guidance and our discussion.

In some aspects our team members feel that it is not easy to cooperate. We do and adjust it at the same time, then overcome this problem slowly.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

I've gained very much trough the participation. I learned how to research, how to interview other people and how to use new computer skills.I also learned how to “unite and cooperate” from it. I am really glad that I have a chance to join this activity.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

To match up the characteristic our school” art and humane”: In the aspect of using resource of hometown community, Tau Tung academy is the weight-bearing point; we strengthen the understanding of hometown art and humane thoughts to students.

We hope we can get to know hometown culture by doing this research, learning the glory of Ho Mei in the past deeply,to discuss how to develop cultural establishments in the future.

To learn the relation between human beings and society, and to practice meanings of deference, connection and arrangement in team cooperation:

In this research activity, we need to make use of language ability to collect information.Exploring history and figures of academy can combine social studies with native teaching materials. Its colored drawing and architecture art promote our abilities of art appreciation. To make a homepage, we have to combine skiils of art with computer. In the process of research, we often use the network.By new means of communnication, like e-mail,message board and hard discs,we have learned much new knowledge about computer, which is more unlikely to be learned at school.

Our action has made people who we have interviewed and many parents realize the meaning of whiat we were doing and aroused their consideration and expectation toward the academy.

The senior residents found that some people were being concerned with past local anecdotes. So they were very willing to tell us what they knew, which they often talk about in their in their leisure time.In this way, these stories can be handed down. We held an activity” Children's Dream -drawing and story”. By this, other students would have chance to join our research study.

We set up our research work on a website. It provides for schools as a native teaching-material and let people share our study results by Internet.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

As it is the time that academy is going to be repaired, this website can provide for peoples as a referral to maintain.

The results are very different from how we thought before. 2.By exploring the historic development of Tau Tung academy, we found that the culture and education in Ho Mei originated from here.We realize if we don’t care about historic spots, they will die away. Lessons:during the study process, we met troubles about mutual coordination, but we learned to consider and encourage with each other, and to be responsible. Thus ,we can insist on our research show the best of our efforts.

Surprises:Through interviewing,we heard of strange things that we never knew before of Tau Tung academy in the past and the origins of the lifelike legends.
