Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

At Shi-lin, there are many scholars that live there. In the great environment of Shi-lin community, many well-known scholars were be born. Hundreds of years ago, there were many people who wanted to live in this city because of its tradition and its location. In the city’s history, there were many struggling advances. Entomologist Chen really liked the place where he lives. He enjoyed the insects so much so he continuous his studies on Entomology. Over the previous years, he kept on teaching people about insects in many places in Taiwan. He hoped that many people would become more interested in the study of insects and be more familiar with the insect world.

2. Summary of Our Project

When Mr. Chen was a little boy, his father taught him about the insects. He modeled and collected over thousand insects ever since he was six. He put them in different schools. Now he has aged and he still enjoys studying insects. He hopes the young kids that are interested will not become bad. He volunteered to give a speech to everyone. Mr. Chen and I want to write his story.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:2-3

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dial-up modem

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:4-6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

There were not too many chances to use the internet at school. That is why most of time we work at home. Each of the 13 members have internet at home. Our communication link is connected to the same internet.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

We went to Mr. Chen’s house for the first time and we interview him and we found out that he mostly speaks Taiwanese. It’s hard to communicate with him and we could hardly understand him. The first interview failed, but our teachers still encouraged us. Our teacher told us that Mr. Chen can understand Mandarin. If we focus on the main topic and speak slowly, it would be better. We improved during the second interview, and Mr. Chen changed the way he spoke. Then we realized we can communicate with him better.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Our participation in International schools CyberFair makes our students learn how to respect Nature and cooperate with each other.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Insect’s week main courses We have different experiences after we visit the insect’s museum. We make an exercise of insect’s weekend. We prepared the activity and learned to create a question. While we made a video tape on the insect museum, Mr. Chen explained to us about the insect. We truly realized that Mr. Chen loves the natural world and he wants to teach the next generation about his spirits. *The language area: speaking skills and personal practice *Nature and life technology area: learning how to discover nature and making poster. *Art and human life area: writing a playbook, making a video tape and play. *Another area: learning to cooperate with Mr. Chen. (1)Field trip After many field trips, we went to different museums for research. At the main research we observed each museum’s good points and bad points. There was a huge difference between the present field trips than the past ones. *The language area: after the museum, write a response *Nature and life technology area: observe the different insect museums. *Another area: polite manners (2)Interview Activities After we interviewed many people, we discovered a lot of thoughts from other people. During the interview, our verbal skills improved. *Language area: We practiced how to interview a person. *Different group activities: People in group study and helping each other. (3)Collecting and Using information Besides using the internet, you can search newspapers or magazines. You can also go visit the people with the knowledge. You will realize that you can study these in many different ways. After, you have to organize the information. This is a very important job. (4)How to practice good and correct manners Any homework, class work, or assigned work from your teacher, you will be responsible for it. Even if the problem is very difficult, you will have to find a way to figure it out. This is the real way to research and study.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

1. Recorder: recording and interviewing. 2. Tape Recorder: Interviewing, visiting and writing a report 3. Camera: Digital Camera, Camera. 4. Telephone: communicate 5. Software: IE 5.0, Word 97, PhotoImpact, Outlook, Dreamwaver 4.0.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

Interviewing: During the research, we interviewed some people that knew Mr. Chen. The first couple times of the interview, they did not know anything about the internet activities so we helped them understand what the activities were. So when we were interviewing, we already reached good communication with people. School activities: From the beginning to the end of this project, we can organize the discussion and school events. Many people know Mr. Chen has an interest towards this project and has great appreciation for it.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

After the ablution of the insect week, many of us met Mr. Chen and visited our school’s insect museum. Now we finally realized that many valuable resources are close to us. Visiting different insect museums, we found out that our insect museum is not very adequate. So after we discussed it with the teachers and Grandpa Chen, we gave our opinions to the school board members. The principal told us that next semester, there will have a better plan for the insect museum. During the interview we met with the teachers, principal, and the school board members. We got together and we discussed our ideas and opinions. Everyone thinks we should pass down Grandpa Chen’s beliefs and emphasize our natural education.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Accepted the interview and lead us to visit the insect’s museum.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

This 2003’s webpage competition-exhibition is a once-in-a-life-time chance. There will be a lot of new ideas, and precious experience. This will help our spirit in discovering and learning about insects. We choose three pictures to show our topic. Making an insect weekend, we were able to see our abilities. Without anything, nothing is possible, only our desire to strike for better. More and more people will understand insects, know Mr. Chen and figure out the secrets of the insects. Teacher crying? No, however, the people are not putting effort, which makes the teacher sad. Teacher says: “Research is for you, or for me? Please make a decision and start doing your responsibility. Everyone should remember this lesson!” Real flower? Or fake butterflies? Both are not, Mr. Lin Chen-Long says, “This is my pet (really).” On the right, there is a cocoon. Mr. Lin wants to give us this great and interesting present, and that was the best gift for you.
