Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Hong Kong is an international center. People in this place live a busy life. However, when you really look inside the community, you will find something that makes you to have a feeling of slow and silence and this is Tai Chi. Usually, you can find that the ones who play Tai Chi usually are elderly people. But nowadays, Tai Chi becomes more popular among younger people. Yoga is very popular in Tai Chi, however, foreign people are also interested in Tai Chi which is a Chinese traditional arts.

2. Summary of Our Project

In our project, we will tell you all about Tai Chi in different aspects, such as history, 5 major styles, weapons and applications. In order to let audience to understand more, we also made interview with Tai Chi expert and video clips of demonstration. We hope that you can understand more about Tai Chi and increase you interest towards Tai Chi and Chinese culture.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:1

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:not sure

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:4-6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

As Tai Chi is Chinese traditional martial arts, there are many specific terms in Chinese that are hardly translated. Then, we turned to solve this problem from books and Internet. Finally, most of the terms can be translated.

Due to the large group of teammates, we were hardly to discuss and communicate with all of them. In order to make the process of our project faster, we made a discussion of labour. An coordinator was selected and helped to contact other members when a meeting was going to hold, for example.

Aparts from these, we also faced some technical problems. When we drew a draft for our web, we think some good ideas and designs. However, due to our insufficient skills, we couldn’t make what we want. Luckily, we got the help from our teacher, so that we can make our project so successfully.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

We learnt more about our country’s culture. Besides, we learnt how to cooperate with our school and friends.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

In computer lessons, we learnt the knowledge of making web page. In this project, we could apply our skills on it and it also fits one of the “16 Habits of Mind” which is our school theme this year.

Through activities and research, we benefit a lot. For activities, we made interview, photo taking and video taking. We can practice oral section of one of our AS Level subjects, the Chinese Language and Culture. Besides, we learnt how to skim reference books and web sites very quickly to search what we wanted. It is good for our comprehension section of the Chinese Language and Culture and Usage of English.

We think that using the Internet for teaching and learning is more effective than traditional methods. Students can get more information from the Internet. With animations and colorful images, students’ interest can be increased.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

In order to do a web, software of making web page must not be neglected. Besides, we also used program of editing video clips as the interview is taken by digital video camera.

We find our information on the Internet and also books which borrowed from the public libraries. For the pictures, we used our own digital cameras to take them.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We have invited a Tai Chi teacher, Mr. Chau Ting Yu, by phone call. We first told him something about our web page and asked him whether he was willing to be taken by digital camera during interview and demonstration. It is so nice that he could accept our request on phone quickly. We were very impressed with his kindness. Mr. Chau was very impressed by our interview questions. He said that or questions were very good and deep.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

When we were doing our project, our classmates were very interested in what we were doing. As they all didn’t know anything about Tai Chi, they would like to learn more and wanted to enhance their knowledge of Chinese culture.

When we took video of our schoolmate’s demonstration of Tai Chi after school, some schoolmates who left behind were interested in it and watched it.

We expected our project would help the community and people around the world to learn more about the Chinese culture. In addition, we also wanted to give a chance for teenagers, or even children to learn more about Tai Chi

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Surely, we got lots of advice from our computer teacher. He always gave comments on our project and helped us to solve technical problems. The one who we should be thanked should be our schoolmate who made demonstration of Tai Chi for our web page. We were so impressed with her wonderful skills and her contribution. Besides, we also need to give a big thank to her Tai Chi teacher as he made an interview for us Without their helps, our web page would not be so successful.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

When we are taking the video with our schoolmate, Peggy who learns Tai Chi for a long period. We all were amazed of her talent. We found that how wonderful our Chinese culture was. When we just saw Tai Chi on TV and books, we just thought that Tai Chi was not a hard task. However, during the video taking of Tai Chi demonstration, we recognized that every step and every gesture have to be done very carefully. We really had a very good lesson of Tai Chi and Chinese culture during the whole process of doing our web page.
