Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Our school is located in Shinyi Area of Taipei. In 1990, the area was designated as Taipei Financial Zone. So, in the jungle of Taipei City Government, World Trade Center and several hot and attractive department stores such as Warner Village etc., the world’s tallest building – Taipei 101 was gracefully erected. Once you raise your head up, the 101 Building’s gorgeous view will project to your eyes at any time. It sometimes gliders, it sometimes is surrounded with stars and the moon lingers, it sometimes hangs at the rainbow and sometimes is half-masked in cloud and mist. After practically visiting it, its gorgeous architecture and top-caliber design make its neighbor like us to be so proud of it. No wonder, within such a short period of time, it has jumped to be a viewpoint that foreign tourists must see when they come to Taiwan.

2. Summary of Our Project

Taipei 101 was named as “the World’s Tallest Building” in October 2004 and was also publicized on the National Geographic Channel with “Salute to the Mega Structures”. The characteristics of the building are to merge the oriental Chinese type of building into western technology. Wishful, copper coins, dragon-bone roof and segment-by-segment rising sloping walls indicate the booming wealth and nobility so that she can fully express Taipei 101 building as an international financial center with jamming crowds and finances; high-speed elevator, wind-resisting damper and the very high Viewpoint Stage are all manifestation of high-tech. Taipei 101 is a landmark of Taipei and also a showcase for exhibiting Taiwan to the entire world.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:2-3

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:4-6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

Our school provides ADSL for linking to internet with an upload speed of 2MB and download speed of 384 KB. There are 4 computer classrooms, one multimedia teaching materials producing center. There is a desktop computer in every classroom of the school and there are several notebook computers provided for teachers to use. Every computer has is provided with an exclusive line for connecting to internet and various web services are available for application through the server. The school’s servers include Web Server, Mail Server, DNS Server and Proxy Server that provide convenient online application environment. Every student has his or her own E-mail address and has the capability of web making.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

(1)We always neglect what we have. Obviously, Taipei 101 is our school’s neghbor. It makes us consider she is easy to touch. Therefore, special attention is not paid to her, naturally, intentional visit to her is not quite an option. Until through this research, we have particularly tried to know more about her. After understanding, we came to realize that the reason why Taipei 101 has managed to get into National Geographic Channel’s “Salute to Mega Structures” does make sense. We always neglect what we have. (2)Expensive Visit. To visist “Taipei 101” is an expensive trip. To research “Taipei 101”, the Viewpoint Stage located at 89th floor is a part absolutely not to be missed. The ticket is NT$ 300 per one at group admission rate. Going higher up to the outdoor Viewpoint Stage at 91st floor, then an additional NT$100 is required. To elementary students, it was really expensive. Fortunately, the parents all supported us so that our research could successfully process. (3)Limited Time. The time was limited. Our members came from 6 classrooms and organized as 6 teams. Every week, there was only one team provided with 2 sessions of class hour to meet the directing teachers. Therefore, we frequently have to catch up with the running time so that only responsibility system had to be applied as volunteer. Each team was responsible for one part of the task, and all parts from different teams were finally combined together like playing a jigsaw puzzle. During the process, there were separate tasks and there were also cooperation. It made us feel really pleasant.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Teachers and students jointly aim for the same target – to have striven with utmost effort for exhibiting Taipei 101 to the whole world with her noble and gorgeous beauty. Humbly viewing other team’s piece of works with exchange of information, sometimes we felt like to be walking on the very scene without any progress, but after turning back for a glance, we’d discovered that “Rome was finally built.” It seems building of a sky-scraper can not linger on a dreaming stage; instead, we should make the dream come true like Taipei 101 in creating our uniqueness!

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

1. In the 9-year consistent education, the school’s standard curricula are taught with strong emphasis on the school’s distinguishing features. The teachers themselves have integrated the school’s resources with the community’s characteristics in planning the school’s standard curricula in person. Taipei 101 is our new neighbor, the world’s tallest sky-scraper, the crystal of high-tech and the oriental culture and the pride of her citizens. According to the statistics of Taipei 101 Public Relation Section, from her grand opening up to the present, most of her visitors interviewed were foreigners, very few local, and the number of residents from her neighborhood was fewer. The reason is our local citizens do not quite understand her, they consider her existence is merely an additional shopping center. Through this research of ours, regardless of written report or photographs, is certain to be very thorough reference information designated in our school’s standard curriculum to stimulate the residents’ passion to love the village to love Taipei 101. It will be an extra new and hot viewpoint to the school’s outdoor teaching. Of course, through our interaction with Taipei 101, we expect that they can provide a feedback package to the students of the community in reducing the admission ticket fare to them. This will get more neighbors by igniting their desires of bodily visiting Taipei 101 with passion.

2. Our school’s development prospects emphasize students to have love, parents to have affection, teachers with dreams. The sky-scraper Taipei 101 is a kind of approach. She is the imagination of high-tech and also the imagination of living. She is precisely, dare to innovate, dare to dream so that it is a successful example of practically getting our dream come true!

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

1.Recorder: During our interviews, paper notes with writing can not catch up so that we used a recorder for assisting us in memorizing the missed portion. 2.Digital camera: To record what we did and what we heard. The photos are also selected for using in our web. 3.DVD Digital Video Recorder:To record what we did and what we heard in the video recorder with audio and video. It is a very good recording for our visit. 4.Mono-gun projector:To project the images and photos on a screen for purpose of presentation. 5.Memory bar:For easy saving of data. 6.Scanner:To digitize the photos taken with traditional camera. 7.Internet:To search related photos, information, telephone numbers and addresses available online. 8.Computer software: (1)Internet Explorer: to search web information. (2)ACDSee: to browse digital photo. (3)PhotoImpact: to amend and cut digital photo. (4)Word: To write work schedule, wording report and research report. (5)FrontPage: Web making. 9.E-mail:To send digital information.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

1. Scenario arrangement: The photos, postcards we bought from 101 and the photos taken by ourselves were printed and pasted on the bulletin board along the corridor of the classroom for attracting the attention of passing by students, we randomly add with description. 2. Result Presentation: (1)Verbal presentation: In addition to releasing the Monograph Research result on the web in the school’s website, result presentation was also presided in the campus. Taipei 101 is introduced to all teachers and students of the school by using posters and a mono-gun projector. (2)Written presentation: This Monograph Research Result was printed into class book and then distributed to various schools in Taipei as a promotion.

3. E-mail: Sent related information to relatives and friends for grandly recommending Taipei 101 to them in the expectation that they will get close to her and share the honor of the world’s tallest building.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

We all know Taipei 101 is erected within our community, but most people remain indifferent to her in the mentality that she’s built by somebody, so it’s none of my business. Through this research, we have discovered that many foreign tourists and people from the central and southern Taiwan put Taipei 101 as the viewpoint they must visit. Therefore, merely seeing her from far sight is not sufficient, the grandeur and pride of this dreamy building can only be discovered by actually getting close to her!

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

1.Mr. & Mrs. Y. L Hsheh:QC Manager of American firm - Dawner Corporation(??????????),participated in the construction of “ Taipei 101”, made the presentation of Taipei 101 to us and showed us around Taipei 101. During his presentation, his mistress co-starred his assistant.

2.101 Public Relation Section’s Project Manager Mr. Hshieh Wen:Acted as tour guide and introduction of Taipei 101. Very clear description of the 101’s construction from the beginning till the completion and the ups-and-downs it encountered during construction. It crowns up the live vitality and culture of 101. 3.101 Engineering Division’s Deputy Manager Mr. Yeh: Acted as rather professional tour guide and introduction of the 101 Project phase. He said the standard of the 101’s structural design applied the 100-year seismic cycle, i.e., in an average of 100 years, there is a 17-degree wind in Taiwan. Therefore, 101 was not affected when there was an earthquake of intensity 5 on Richter scale and it will not collapse at an earthquake of intensity 7 on Richter scale. 4.Guang Fu Primary School’s Teacher Cheng Yi-Wen:Our school’s Training and Physical Education Section Chief, assisted in correspondence with Taipei 101 so that the teachers and students had successfully visited the Viewpoint Stage with special discount price and had provided with exclusive personnel for accepting us for the overall tour. 5.Guang Fu Primary School’s Teacher Chen Li-Yu: Our school’s Information Section Chief, she has from time to time concerned on the research progress, assisted in search of telephone numbers and wrote to Go Go Rock Music Corporation for obtaining photo’s application right. 6.Ms. Liao Yi-Yu:Our class’s parent, assisted in taking digital DVD photos, lots of information not possible to look at within the short period of visiting time can be exposed with the said photos as real. 7.Guang Fu Primary School’s Teacher Hshiao Ching-Liang:Our schools’s Artistic Labor Teacher, very professional and skillful in photographing, provided the 101 photos he shot to us for making website. Go Go Rock 8.Music Recording Corporation:'Heading Up to the Sky Live Concert of Wuyuehtien (May Sky)”, the three acting photos of Wuyuehtien at the Taipei 101’s outdoor Viewpoint Stage taken by Go Go Rock Recording Corporation from a helicopter, provided us the right to use them free of charge, we really grateful to Go Go Rock’s assistance an help.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

1. Discovery: (1)Gazing down to the ground at Viewpoint Stage, it seems like looking at a model which enables you to view Taipei at your satisfaction. The views are gorgeous, especially when we look at the school and Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall which we are familiar with, they still needs to be reconfirmed. We felt it really extraordinary. (2) We previously thought Taipei 101 is only a common shopping mall available there for one to see when raising one’s head at any time. Therefore, we have just glance at it from far without an intention of going in there to visit. After a practical research, we have discovered that it indeed is a gorgeous building. The hardship and effort in building a sky-scraper on a land within high frequency of earthquakes, the Viewpoint Stage at 89th Floor, the damper that turns to be decoration, and the high-speed elevator such stable that even a coin is erectable are so new to us and they really are incredible. It is precisely a crystal of mankind’s wisdom and high-tech! All human beings should come for a visit so that the potential of her people from Taiwan will be revealed to the whole world. She represents the confidence and prospect of Taiwanese. 2.Lesson: Taipei 101 was listed in National Geographic Channel’s “Salute to Mega Structures” program and broadcasted to the whole world. Unexpectedly there was none of our concern. We have reckoned that was but a sky-scraper. Until our research on Taipei 101, we were astonished to have missed the chance for watching “Slate to Mega Structures”. 3.Pleasant Amazement: “Taipei 101 is our sky-scraper. She comprises the uniqueness of oriental thoughts. Indeed, she is our pride.
