Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Changhua County, the place we live, has a history of 280 years. It is a beautiful plain, adjoined by hills and streams. With the intersecting of the mountain-line railway and the coast-line railway, Changhua County is an important traffic area. Changhua also owns magnificent scenes, which draws many tourists to enjoy its nature beauty.

Our research target-- 'Changhua String Ensemble Development League' furthers great music to spread out on the land. We hope our introduction can motivate more children who love music, and promote the corporation of communities. To let more children learn violin; to realize the dream -- 'wonderful melody everywhere' and 'Lin Jao-Lian, Ma Yo-Yo every home'.

2. Summary of Our Project

Hemei Detective is introducing 'Changhua String Ensemble Development League'(CSEDL). Its main idea is to popularize music and music education. The successfully combined the powers of school and community, to let thousands of children go on concert stages, into music world.

Although people know the saying 'Kids who learns music don't go bad', but traditionally music learning costs too high—on expensive instruments, tuition, etc. Few families could afford kids' music learning. Dr. Yang Dao-Bing's purpose of founding CSEDL is to break that obstacle. Preparing from 2004 February, starting group practice in 2004 September, 1 year after, the 1st thousand people ensemble was held in 2005 July. The spectacular view was very touching. They really broke the obstacle. They had made more and more children enter the palace of music.

Let's see how they made the dream come true. We hope our project will motive more people to learn music by this simple way. We hope music can fill our world. We hope music can bring us peace, console our pain, and ease our sorrow. If everyone can perform music with his hands, if people talk with music, the gaps and quarrels must be dissolved. We dream that future world will be full of music beauty.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:1

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:4-6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

School Internet Invironment: 2 computer classrooms. All the compters are linked. It is very convenient to work at school. Team-members' Home Internet Invironment: All members have interneted computers at home. After school, they use internet disk and the website to do research. Builing Blog: We build a blog for sharing the data and photos of research and as a message board.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

a) Difficulty of data collecting:There are little data about CSEDL. Thanks to CSEDL's teachers, doing their possible to provide data. We also go to CSEDL to take photos and investigate. b) Difficulty of Editing Webpages : We have little experience of editing webpages, so we meet much difficulty. Thanks to Mr. Zhang Jun-Lang and Mr. Lee Chia-Feng, they solve many problems. c) Difficulty of Time Arranging: To avoid occupying members' class time, we use morning-study-time and afternoon-break to do research. And we go out-visiting or interview on holidays or Wednesday afternoon.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

I have taken part in CyberFair twice, and learnt a lot, like how to team-work, the manners of interview and the method of doing research. When we began to discuss questionnaire arrangement, we lost our direction. Until our teacher guided us, we could have made a conclusion. This experience brought me the happiness of learning. This project, I have realized how CSEDL runs, which I can not learn at school. I gained so much in this project. Thanks to teachers for letting me join CyberFair.(by Little Yo)

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

a) Combination with 'Arts and Humanities' Learning Area Our school takes 'Arts and Humanities' Learning Area as the feature of 'School-based Curriculum Development'. Our scholl has 2 string ensembles. The project aims at the string ensemble and music, which corresponse to our school curriculum development.

b) Fully Adopt Computer Technology In our project, we often use the internet. By our blog, we learn more efficiently. We also learn many technological products, like digital camera, digital recorder, web-disk, mobile disk, etc.

c) Intergrated Learning Activities In our project, we use knowledge that we learn in the major learning areas, and we use some research methods that we don't use at scholl. We have been more proficient at the research methods, such as interviewing, questionnaire, statistics, etc. We also have developed the idea and method of corporation and communication.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Interactive website: It let us immediately share information and discuss on line. Blog: We build a blog in our school-web. It is called 'CSEDL Project Website'. It can let us immediately send data, discuss on line, etc. Web-disk and Mobile-disk: We have much data to be saved. The 1.44 mb disks easily get damaged, and the school's computer disks might be touched by others. So we think to use web-disks and mobile-disks is the best. Technical Equipment: We use telephone, computer, ADSL wide network, scanner, printer, digital camera, digital video camera, and mobile disk.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

a) To let people know our project: The greatest ambition of 'Changhua String Ensemble Development League' is to 'popularize music and music education'. Thus, CSEDL wants to be known by more people, especially parents. This project can let many people know CSEDL's efforts and way of function. So more children will join CSEDL.

b) Let the world know CSEDL by Web: We hope more people know CSEDL by our project. Wish CSEDL can develop from Changhua to all Taiwan, and its impact spread all over the world. Let the world has young music-learners everywhere. May the world be better, and more peaceful.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

a) Let Changhua people know more about CSEDL , be concerned with it, and support it. Upgrade people's music equipment. Give children wonderful music learning.

b) Street performance brings music to life: Combine with 'Art and Humanity' learning area. Blend music into life, arouse people's interest for music.

c) Let people understand that Changhua county's effort on music education, and that Changhua has many music talents. Give the music teachers a good chance to bring us good music education.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

a) During our project, we have got a lot of assistance from regional people, such as our school principal, teachers and parents. They provided us a lot of data and assistance.

b) More thanks to the staff of CSEDL, including the founder--Dr. Yang Dao-Bin, the executives, and the violin teachers. For they provide much data for us and earnestly answer our questions, helping us successfully achieve the project.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

Funny discovery: I taste bitterness as well as sweetness in participating in CyberFair. The bitterness: I had to type my reflection everyday. But the sweetness is much more : It's fun to research with team-members and learn new things. Moreover, a couple of time though the teachers of CSEDL were very tired in video-recording, they still had to keep up smile! The situation was quite funny.(by Little Yo)

Lesson: In this CyberFair project, I learn many experiences and knowledge, like increasing my knowledge of string instruments, how to record DVDs, interview skills, and how to write reports, etc. CyberFair is something we can learn so much knowledge from! My greatest gain is that I realize CSEDL's management. (by Little Ru)

Surprise: What I am amazed at is the amazing sound sent out by string instruments. A violin's scale is divided into C, D, E, F, G, A, B. With sharps and flats, wonderful music can be produced. I think a single violin performance is not very pleasant to hear. After watching CSEDL's DVD, I find ensemble is much better than solo. (by Wang-Wang)
