Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

In addition to Sing-gang's well-known religion of Matsu and Sing-gang fudge, she is also a place full of people and cultural activities. Local music and drama associations often go to the Unites States and Europe to perform irregularly. With the promotion of local people the traditional arts and crafts, the cutting and pasting artwork and Geozi pottery, develop successfully in recent years. So far Sing-gang is the most important town in developing Geozi pottery.

Although the Sing-gang community is a agricultural town that developed early, the streets are tidy and clean and the area around Fengtian temple is called one of the most prosperous place in Sing-gang with it's downtow‘s convenient traffic. With the Goddess of Dachai Matsu coming home, there are a lot of worshippers come to visit. Walking on the streets of Sing-gang is like entering a huge garden. You can easily see the beautiful design of gardening around corners and fences. In recent years, with the elaborate design of the Sing-gang cultural fund the dormitories of the Taiwan sugar association were made a place where people can take a rest and the fund also adopted community's public area to beautify the environment and trained cultural workers, making this old little town to be lively again.

2. Summary of Our Project

The main ingredients of Sing-gang fudge are malt sugar and peanuts, which can be counted as a kind of peanut candies. In early times that lacked life commodities, it's a super luxury to be able to taste candies with fillings. During Chinese year or worshipping Matsu Sing-gang fudge is the most popular present. Besides under Japan 's colonization it was even presented across the sea to the Japanese emperor, giving credits to it's special taste and quality. Therefore Sing-gang became more famous around the island just like Matsu .

In recent years, to cater consumers' needs for various flavors many stores promoted related products, such as longan fudge, plum fudge, and green tea fudge, which are also greatly liked. The active candy industry has become one of Sing-gang's characteristics. Being a local of Sing-gang, we'd like to find out why this little candy could grasp everyone's heart and how it's made by exploiing our hometown and Sing-gang fudge. Meanwhile we hope to realize the dilemma and challenges when inventing products and learn it's innovative and aggressive spirits through our interviews.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:less than 20

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:2-3

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:2-3

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

--School: There‘s one computer classroom in campus, using windows 98 system. So far the internet service is ADSL. There are two WINDOWS2003 SEVERs. Two NT SEVERs are installed anti-virus SEVER and Mail Server. Another computer adopted LINUX system as the central processing unit of the school's home page. Apart form the computer classroom, you can surf the internet in each classroom. The library and audio-visual classroom even provide wireless internet service.

--Home : Members use dial-up internet or ADSL wide-band internet. The data we found was mostly stored in discs or via emails for members to share. Later the amount of data grew too huge and pictures too many to store in discs, so the teacher open a data file at FTP Server and overcame the problem.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

he big challenge we faced when doing the research at fist

Although there were 6 members attending this research plan, in fact all the six-graders were involved. In addition to be in charge of the progress, we had to emerge all of the results of students' guessing riddles. It's such a great responsibility and full of challenges. When it got started, we were not even familiar with integrating data. Usually many hours passed and we couldn't even finish the work. Besides, everyone was too shy to speak out when interviewing. Thanks to teachers' bringing up questions, the situation was not too embarrassing. This was another task.

Although we couldn't make everything perfect during the research, teacher would lead us to have some reflections and write them down after each activity. Through the process we could find out our disadvantages and inefficiencies, figure out ways and improve next time. From this experience we had the same feeling that we must not fear facing challenges. As long as we face the unknown challenge, we would make progress!

It took us a lot of time to try and learn because we were not proficient at integrating data and design web page.

It's our first time to attempt to do research. Both teachers and students gained experiences when doing it. We were not familiar with the skills of designing web pages, so when students gathered the recorded data the first time, them ran the tape recorder back and forth for more than 1 hour to finish. The instructing teachers had to overcome the difficulties of making the software of homepage. So nearly everyone was still in front of computers to get familiarized with the skill of designing homepage.

Although we faced many challenges during the process, we still believed “Three are better than one”. Many problems were overcome after our discussion and cooperation. In the meantime, we grew more united. There is such a saying ”You leave trails after walking”. On our page, you'll see our sweet results.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

When we first heard the news of attending the web contest, we knew nothing about it. Before registering, it took group members two week to choose the research topic. The following step was to surf the net to see other works and adjust our plan. Therefore we find that'to fumble, discuss, act and adjust' are our main and best research methods.

In the past, we were always in a hurry. We never stopped to look at the Hisngkang fudge at local foods store because there are so many imported and delicate candies now. Although we live in Sing-gang, we almost forgot the existence of Sing-gang fudge. From this research, we found out that this little candy contains our ancestors' wisdom, the spirits of cherishing goods, the prosperous and downfallen stories of this town and the change and innovation of local industry.

Each chewy Sing-gang fudge represent the local love that Hisngkang people have for their town. Through this activity this love secretly grew in every group member's heart. From beginning to the end, we tasted the sour, sweet, bitter and spicy. The meaning of Hisngkang fudge can't be replaced by any fancy candies.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

It's our first time to attempt to do research. Both teachers and students gained experiences when doing it. We were not familiar with the skills of designing web pages, so when students gathered the recorded data the first time, them ran the tape recorder back and forth for more than 1 hour to finish. Although we faced many challenges during the process, we still believed “Three are better than one”. Many problems were overcome after our discussion and cooperation. In the meantime, we grew more united. There is such a saying ”You leave trails after walking”. On our page, you'll see our sweet results.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

http://librarywork.taiwanschoolnet.org/gsh2006/gsh4544/en/element.htm

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

*Take actions and do the field study: By actual interviews of group members we connected the school and the community and gained supports and encouragement intangibly. Especially we went to stores, the owners would treat us with free Hsingkang fudge and even a cup of hot tea. It's so wonderful both to learn and eat at the same time!

*To leave message on the net: The internet advocates were mostly students. Apart from transferring information, we were also responsible for surfing other group's works and share experiences with each other.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Although Sing-gang is not big place, it's a town full of cultural activities. Each year the great Dachai Matsu worshipping activity makes Sing-gang a famous tourist attraction. Sing-gang shows different looks under local people's efforts. When we thought about the research topic, group members chose Sing-gang fudge without hesitating because it is not only adults' sweet memory but also children's favorite snack.

In the course of the research, we couldn't wait to introduce this local food that suits both young and old to everyone.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

E-learning & E-sharing:This is the first time all the member used the web page to present our results. Though the results were not perfect, we had the experience to learn and share via internet.

Bury a seed of caring for the earth: After this research, we knew more about not only Hsingkang and the town but also cherish the old treasure around us.

Cooperate in a team, challenge and improve ourselves from each obstacle: From gathering information, doing interviews to presenting the web page, it's the revelation of our hard work. Though we met some obstacles, under everyone's brainstorming they were solved without difficulty. Now we are a team.
