Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Our project is about historical landmarks so we should say some words about our city and its history. Shumen, is a city of 100 000 people situated in the Northeastern part of Bulgaria. It was founded 3200 years ago. During ancient times the city was cradle on the rich spirit and significant culture – Thracians, Romans, Byzantines, Bulgarians. In close proximity to Shoumen are the first two capitals of the Bulgarian nation – Pliska and Veliki Preslav and the religious center Madara.

2. Summary of Our Project

The project presents the history of Shumen from ancient times to nowadays. With this website we want to present our town, our country and our nation through the centuries.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:2-3

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

We had technical problems uploading the gallery and problems with finding good pictures of the landmarks. To sort the problem with pictures we contacted with different museums and asked them for help. But we still have a problem with our gallery. We hope that it will be ready by deadlines.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Actually, students learned a lot about our city and its past. I think we also had a good time creating this project.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

During this project we had a lot of fun but also we learned to be disciplined, creative and thinkable. We improve our historical and technical skills. In Bulgaria internet for teaching becomes one of the most useful methods, so it's more effective than traditional methods. We use computers and internet when we want our lessons to be more attractive for students. They enjoy this kind of learning and teaching very much. Our project was some kind of a game and at the same time a very good lesson.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Well, we use traditional tools. Our school has 55 computers but we used only 4. We took some pictures with digital camera, because we couldn't find any good. We conected with museums in our town and the book that we used to help us with this project was one - 'Shumen-cradle of ancient culture'. About software - we used Microsoft Frontpage and Paint.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

Yes, we contected with museums and directors of this musums by e-mail and phonecalls. We also talked with archeologists ant history teachers. They were interested with our projects and helped a lot. Actually students met some of them and they chatted over a cup of coffe.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

I deeply hope that our project will make people who live in our city to think about what they have, and every day passing along the landmarks to be proud that they are citizents of this town.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Georgi Maistorski - National historical -archeological reserve and museum 'Veliki Preslav' - this is the man that helped us a lot so we want to thank him about all this pictures we have and about the information he gave me. Our helpers were all these people that are mantioned in the bibliography page. We thank yo all.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

Actually as we said we learned a lot about our city. History is something that is teaching us every day, so during the project we had a very important lesson. We descovered wonders that allways were here but we just didn't estimate them.
