Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Our local communty is located in Romania , a Central European Country. Situated in the center of the depression with the same name, at an altitude of 360-380 m, Radauti has established its hearth in the confluence angle of Suceava with Sucevita. The oblong form of the dumps (NV-SE) favors the conduct of the wind blowing in this way, and the numerous water surfaces introduce some changes in the normal way of meteorological elements. The average annual temperature is 6.9°C; the average annual temperature of July is 18.2°C and of January -5.3°C. The average annual rainfall is 643.6mm. The clime is temperate. At first sight, an opened territory, the area of the town called Radauti is well hidden in a natural way, by the swampy land that surrounds it. This natural protection, associated with the vast possibilities of practicing the agriculture and cattle rising, have made Radauti, from the ancient times, an adequated place for living (the oldest signs found are from 7000 years ago) The region has a lot of mineral resources ,the salt and the mineral water know in the World as 'La Dorna'.Bukowina is a touristical area with a lot of mountain resorts and pensions that anualy atrracct a lot of tourists because of the landscape ,of the clean envirnomet and of the ecological food that is characteristic for this area. Because of the rich green parts, of the high quality of the water , the locals deal with raising animals,growing vegetables ,and planting trees.etc

2. Summary of Our Project

At school we foud out what the levels that must be considerd are when detrmining the quality of the water,of the air and of tha soil.There were intensive moments of talking between colegues on the topic of the envirnoment and our group was spotaniously organized that chose to study 'The dtermiantion of the ph from the hidrogrphical area of Radauti' Out group has 5 members and every one of them has an important role in creating the project. Ioana-Mãdãlina Belibou and Andreea ªpac took samples from the field ,translated the hole matereial in English,and talked with with the outorities specialized in this area.. Mihaela Sehlanec and Roxana Irofte were the ones who took the pictures making this project a known matter,staied in contact with the mass-media Spooksmen. Costel Prelipcean deald with the thenological part of the project,he createed the web-pages and he made the disign of the project.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

In the cold months speciall in January and February it was very hard to take sample of the siol because it was forzeen.We asked our colegues for help,and they helped us by tansfoming our problem in an ocasion form leisure and recreation. Another problem was adaptating our scheduel to the the one of chemist engineer Cristina Mafteian,wich was very kind to us.She advised us as a real professinist.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Our school takes part to a program called 'EcoSchool' and our participation at this CyberFair project and the propaganda that we made helped to inform the pupils about the concequences that could be brought by a deteriorated environment.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

This project taught us how to work in a team,to be tolerants, how to speak with the autorities about a problem, to take into account the opinion of the others and it was a chance to performe our English knoledge. The Internet is very useful in learning because it offers us many information witch are accesible in top speed. Our group is a small one,we all have the same age, sex and intelectual preparation, our group also has a coordinating and our work was an experimental one. First, the members of the group had had individual tasks, then, we put together all the information, we worked like a team and, finally, we elaborated this projet.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

To finalise the project we had at our disposal 4 computers connected to the internet with a connection of minimum 16 kb/s from the info lab, phones for keeping in touch with the officials, school library for information and data colecting, digital camera for taking photos, oral interviews with the principal of our high school, doctor Diana Iliescu and engineer Cristina Mafteian. The most important thing that helped us make this project was the chemestry laboratory, endowed with the necessary equipments to determinate the water quality. The most important objects that we used in making the project were the books which brought us a lot of information about the water quality conservation and the interviews with Diana Iliescu and Cristina Mafteian .The most helpfull and utilised technology has been the internet connection because we could inform us about the stages that we had to follow for finalising the project.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

First of all we informed our classmates about our intentions and about what we needed as reference material. Andreea S. has spoken with Mrs Diana Iliescu, the manageress at “DSP Suceava”(an organision which is in charge with keeping people healthy),who is involved directly in this problem,Mrs. chemist Angela Alistar and the asistant chemist Mr.Cristian Cazac. Madalina B. was involved in keeping in touch with the engineer Mrs.Cristina Mafteian, who is the manageress of the purger station. Mihaela S. was involved in talking about this problem with the responsables in keeping clean the environment. Roxana.I. talked with our high school principal, Marian Olaru, about our intentions and she demanded for his agreement.Roxana also took the photos and she informed the editorial office ”Saptamanalul de Radauti” about our manner in doing this project.As a result of this step,the management of the newspaper demanded us to write an article about our work. After the appearance of the article, the local TV channel Mbit Radauti invited us to an interview. These appearances in local mass-media involved in this project all the inhabitants of Radauti, especially the teenagers from the other high schools who congradulated us.The teachers of the other specialities encourage us and they were interested of the way that this project unfolds.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

We hope that by our project the community will become conscious about the danger of water pollution. We offered the results for publishing them,hoping that the community would have something interesting to learn about this problem. We strived to present honestly our community and environments, by many descriptions and photos for pointing out the invaluable gift that nature offered us. Our web page was seen by our classmates, pupils from the other high schools, our teachers, people from the newspaper and the local TV channel,the specialists from “D.S.P. Suceava” who colaborated with us.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We were helped by our chemistry teacher, Mrs. Saviuc Magdalina who has experiecnce in this kind of projects.We translated the hole materials by ourselvs and the one that helped us with the tehnological part of our project was Costel Prelipcean.We spoke with chemistry engeneer Cristina Mafteian who told us where to get the samples from.
