Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Our school is located in Yilan City, Yilan County, Taiwan and the leader we present in our research is Mr. Huang Chun-Ming and his Huang Ta-Yu Kid’s Troupe are also located in Yilan City. Yilan City, a capital city of Lanyang Plain, a plain first developed since Wu Sa led his followers into Toucheng in 1796. They pushed gradually southward. In 1802, immigrants from Zhangzhou, Fujan, China developed the 5th base point, Wu Wei (5th Enclosure), which is present Yilan City. 1810, due to outlaws’ and pirates’ actions, the Ching Government decided to annex into its territory and set up a county administration – Kamalan County Government to charge. They built castle with soil and plant Jiuchun Tree on the earth wall as fence and make the castle a city with wall, isolating waters, office, street, temple and educational institutes and was called Jiuchun City. It turned this place a center of politics, economic and culture. Presently, Yilan City is equipped with the best Performance Hall in Yilan County, which has been used by many performing groups, both domestic and foreign. Huang Ta Yu Kid’s Troupe has been dedicating their performance in this place for many times. It has even moved their Troupe base to this performance hall to be the originating place for promoting children drama.

So, the students can browse online in school as well as at home for needed data and information.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

1.Compatibility of time between member and interviewed: Teachers conducting interview on behalf of students, and discuss with students over the recorded tapes. 2.Security: Set up the interview appointment as early s possible and provide the interview schedule as well as the insurance time table. 3.Students and teachers are differently oriented to the research: Convincing with students with the theory that data sorting and interpretation are the most important part of an invention and a research. 4.Photographing: Use better camera or ask the troupe to provide photos. 5.No random interview: Use lunch break or the break between interviews. The results of research were conveyed to teachers in Wednesday seminar and we designed learning sheets, special reports, drama play to make students know about Huang Chun-Ming and his Kid’s Troupe 6.Coordination with school instructions need be improved:The results of research were conveyed to teachers in Wednesday seminar and we designed learning sheets, special reports, drama play to make students know about Huang Chun-Ming and his Kid’s Troupe 7.Still lot of work needs be done:Although our workload grew with the approaching of date set for uploading, but we, students and teachers, are proud for the Achievement we have made.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Master Huang Chun Ming is a unique person. Before meeting him, we knew that he is a famous folk literature writer. After searching data/ materials about him on line, the interview and following tours of his Huang Ta Yu Kid’s Troupe, we sensed his vast range of knowledge. From literature to kid’s drawing books, from radio drama to documentary, from photographing to shredding drawing, he learnt by himself in many cases, but he is very professional. The deep emotional transaction between people in his works always make people just believe them. We asked, why does he promote kid’s drama? He insisted that he is not promoting, but providing children who might not have the chance to watch stage play. This moved us very much. We though a famous writer must have grand target or purpose in establishing a kid’s troupe in his home town. Yet, what he had is a simple hope. It is hard to believe that in this superficial and disguised era, there is a person like Master Huang Chun-Ming, persisting and dedicating in a tiny simple wish. We feel lucky as well as happy to be a Yilan local, as Master Huang Chun-Ming is.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

The 9-Year-Through Education System stress on nurturing students with humanity sense, integrating and consolidating abilities, democratic culture, local and international visions, as well as lifetime learning drive. We take Master Huang Chun-Ming and Huang Ta Yu Kids Troupe as the topics of our research is to providing students with the portable abilities through collection and production of thematic data. The abilities include setting up plan, collecting data and material, interview, questionnaire survey and web page production. From our daily teaching, we have found that students are all having the passion in search, but they sometimes are lack of guidance to lead them the way, the direction or the theme. In addition to display the results of research, we hope that in the process of research, we hope that the students will appreciate Literature, Drama as well as acquiring the skill in research. Hence, we will provide opportunities as much as possible to allow students to initiatively search for data and materials, integrating and consolidating collected data and materials, and, appreciate the beauty of folk literature and kid drama, and finally, through the link to life and culture, they would have care about the physical and mental environments. In the extension of effect of research, by class thematic report, drama experience, watching the performance of kid troupe and seminars with students, we provide school with local program with an opportunity of establishing own curriculum. Also, the research mode may be used as reference for similar thematic instruction of the school.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

In this research, we intend to conduct in the way of interview and site recording. We will use telephone to make reservation and we will liaise with interviewed through e-mail. In the process of interviewing and recording the campus tour of Huang Ta Yu Kids Troupe, we will use every opportunity to know teachers, students and parents of other school and to promote our research plan. In the school, in addition to the school publication, we use the flexible hours to apply cross-field thematic learning, joining Chinese Language, Society and General Program to have students of the class to submit report on “Reading Huang Chun-Ming” as well as drama experience. For teachers, we have a workshop to explain the contents of our research. In advertisement outside the school, in addition to the funding subsidies of Creativity Program of Ministry of Education as well as providing linkage on the web pages of Creativity Program, a “Reading 100” project is implemented to join Elementary and Junior High Schools together, inviting students to read the works of Master. The school also printed Inserts of the School winning Cyber Fairs award to promote our research plan. We use also the Bill Board functions of Cyber Fairs to recommend our thematic report to the schools attended the competition and invite them to appreciate the performance of Huang Ta Yu Kids Troupe. Presently, we have obtained the support of the School and will translate the Web Pages into English and to attend International Cyber Fairs competitions. We want to offer the beautiful stories occurred in Yilan will to many more people in the world.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Master Huang Chun-Ming told us –“As long as kid is offered with opportunity, every kid can play.” We were half-convinced only, but we took this opportunity to group the class each with a story for children written by Huang Chun- Ming for them to write scripts, rehearsal, making the props independently and freely. Other than rehearse attentively, they made their properties each single pieces, from sewing a piece of small wing to making a whole scarecrow. Although they were afraid that they might not perform well enough, yet when they were on stage, they showed what they understood about the story, and, with their own creation. This surprised me very much. After this performance, we got the chance of checking the children again and change my perception of the creativity and toughness of the children.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We have to thank many people who had been so kind and so generous in helping us during this process of research, by sparing time to accept out interview, by providing related data and information. These helpful actions and moves have enabled us in completing our study smoothly as well as establishment of our web pages. We want to thank Master Huang Chun Ming, Ms. Li Shin Juan, Ms. Chou Der Chuin, Mr. Yu Ben Li, Juo Juin-Weu, Student Gu Feng of Huang Ta Yu Kid Troupe and all members of the troupe. There are also Director Guo Yi-Lan of Jausi Elementary School, student Yu Wen-Zu, Mr. Wang Ming-Der, Principal of Kolin Elementary School, teachers, parents and students who accepted our questionnaire survey, all the students of Class 606 who participated in Class Theme Investigation and Drama Experience and National Culture & Arts Foundation who provided us the materials and data in research of Master Huang Chun-Ming and Ping, who kindly offered the pictures. We have to be grateful for parents and teachers who assisted us during the process of the research. They include Mr. Chen Wen-Chung, who provide web space, Mr. Wong Liang –Hung, who arranged Teachers Seminar, Mr. Lin Chi-ching, who provide Class 106 as the premise for the performance, Mr. Lin Ching-Huei, who helped us in applying for funding from Creative Plan, Mr. Tsai Sheng-An, a teacher of Yu Tsai Elementary School. Without your help, we would not be able to complete the web pages and participate in the competition.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

We found during interviewing Huang Ta-Yu Kids Troup, we found that the members covered students of elementary school, junior high, housewives, retired teachers and farmers. They were not having formal training, but the professionalism is no less than the professional actors. We wonder why they came to the play. Some of them were because the parents need to pick up children who joined the troupe and were attracted and joined. The Troupe is under limited budget, but some of the members devoted their time and their money to assist the troupe to perform best possible play for those who have no chance of watching the stage play of children. With the unselfish devotion of Master Huang Chun-Ming and Huang Ta Yu Kids Troupe, we have the chance of watching the show “ Junior Li is not a Liar” This is a wonderful and inspiring play. Just like the definition of Kid’s Drama by Master Huang Chun-Ming— “Kid’s Drama is a wonderful seed, planted in the heart of children and it will blossom later…” (Quoted from blog of Ping.) We hope that our web page will lead many other people to feel the charm of Kid’s Drama and Master Huang Chun-Ming to enrich our hope for the future.
