Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Peitou district is located in northern Taipei city. It is a community with the great development of information broadcasting and the involvement of Chinese and Western cultures. Through the news broadcasting of the internet and TV, the people in the community can immediately get the first-hand information. Among the news media, there is a bilingual community TV studio insisted of Mingde primary school students. By broadcasting the community and school news on TV and the internet, the little reporters make our people and foreigners, our school and the whole community closely together.

2. Summary of Our Project

Our project focuses on how our school bilingual TV station “ Minge e Channel” has some educational influences on our community and our school by broadcasting school and community news. The programs made by a group of the students under 13 years old provides the motivation to inspire more other students, teachers, and community people to know more about our community. Besides, this TV station may also affect the future of us, the members of cyberfair and aslo the TV station because it makes their dream come true— reporting news and share their ideas with everyone! Maybe one day “reporting news” will become their future job one day!

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:1

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:4-6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

1.Time limitation: When we discussed our project, it’s always hard to arrange time to have a meeting because of our tight school schedule. And it really took us lots of time to contact interviewees. Solution: We finished our main research in the summer vacation and discuss our project progress on MSN. Our teacher assisted us to contact the interviewees. 2. Language limitation: Because our TV station is bilingual (Chinese and English), our members, also the reporters, should speak English fluently. It’s a great challenge for us who take English as second language. Solution: When we prepare the English interview, we often seek our English teacher help and correct our interview questions. Besides, we work as a team to gather related information. 3. Team work, communication problems: Since our members are not in the same class, at first we were not familiar with each other. We sometimes had problems in working together and discussing. Solution: In summer vacation and during the break time in school, we got to know each other and built up an atmosphere of teamwork and cooperation by doing our project. 4. Interview problems: Because our TV station reports not only school news but also community news. But it’s not convenient to gather community information or interview the people in our community since sometimes we have to spend a lot of time and money on transportation. Solution: We have the fund which is offered by our family to pay the fare of transportation. 5. Equipment limitation: Though our members all have computers at home, some of us don’t have the website-making software, which delayed our project progress. Solution: We did some word process at home. And most of the time we made our project and website in school. 6. The lack of the sufficient knowledge of using information technology: We didn’t take enough courses of using information technology. So sometimes we couldn't handle film editing and the elaborate parts of making our website. Solution: Our IT teachers spent extra time teaching us how to make a good website and the members with great computer aptitude can help others.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

We think joining Cyberfair contest is a very special learning experience because we’ve learnt lots of valuable knowledge by doing the project. Unlike only learning things form books, “learning by doing” makes us truly understand the value of the things we’ve learnt from the project. And by joining the organization” Minde e Channel” the object of our project, we can realize the function of our school’s TV station and how “media” and “technology” affect our school and our community. In our daily life, there are so many things available to observe, research and report. There are so many people who need our care and support. We also learnt the importance of teamwork. We can’t feel until we indeed experience it. We hope through our project and website, every one can see our dream and love to our school and community.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Our nine - year coherence curriculum emphasizes the development of schools features, the interaction between schools and the community, and students’ ability of learning independently. “Mingde e Channel” has the education function of introducing our school features and social resources to our students, having them know our community. So by researching Mingde e Channel, we can realize our school organization and the community information it offers. By joining Mingde e Channel, we ’ve learn many skills like writing skills, people interaction skills, and information process skills. Moreover, our project makes our TV programs can be watched on the Internet, which makes it more convenient for our teacher, students, and our community residents (local and foreign residents) to know more things happening in our community, in our life. Besides, after we join Mingde e Channel, our program start to affect our community and in the future, our TV station will play an important role of broadcasting more and more school and community news Our school and community will get more and more closely and people will care more about each other. Our TV station not only change our community's future but also ourselves. Many of our members want to work as reporters in the future and help more people through gathering and reporting news!

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Because the organization of we’ve research widely uses technology, we realize the importance of technology to our life. During the process of doing our project, we find video and tape recorders (recording pens) play the most important role. Not only are video and tape recorders the basic tools for a TV station but also we used them to record every detail of our project. It’s convenient for us to review the information we’ve gathered before reporting the news. Besides, we also use other information tools: 1. Computers: The most important tools for making websites, editing films and discussing on line. 2. Telephones: Most of the time, we contacted interviewees and our members by telephones 3. Tape recorders and digital recording pens: To write news scripts, we need to record the content of the interviews. 4. Digital cameras: It is necessary to take pictures of the interviews. 5. Others: Printers, Poster printers, and scanners. 6. Software: film editing software, website making software, and other photo editing software.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

To know more about how our school TV station “ Minde e Channel” interacts with our community, we join the TV station ourselves and work with other members of this special organization or invited the ex-members of Mingde e Channel to take part in our project. When we were doing our project, we contacted the teachers and students in our school, and many people in our community to gather school and community news by visiting, doing surveys and interviewing. Especially when we visited the job training center for the mental retarded, we not only interviewed the teachers and students there but also built up website for them and assisted them to sell their products to the people in our community because the students in the job training center need our community’s encouragement and support.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Before doing the research about Mingde e Channel, we never thought our small student TV station did much more than we imagined. After we joined Mingde e Channel and be the members of this organization, we reported school and community news and played the role of connection between our school and community, that is , to let our teachers and students know more our community and the people in our community can also know what their kids do in school and our school. Further, our news and effort makes more people willing to care our people and our environment. Now, we built up our own website. That means not only our community but also people in other places, in our country or around the world can watch our programs!

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We want to thank many people in our community for offering lots of useful information and assistance. For example, our district chiefs and many community volunteers help us to contact our interviewees and interesting information. When we volunteered to help the students of the job training center for the mental retarded, they also joined us and helped the students by buying and promoting their products. And we would like to express our gratitude to all our members and teachers in Mingde e Channel our parents, the interviewees, who have provided the materials and information about Mingde e Channel to help us finish our project.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

It’s a great experience to join the project because we’ve learnt much precious knowledge independently by devoting ourselves to doing the research and know a lot about our community when gathering our news materials. And our teamwork and lots of preparation take the credit for completing our project. And we also find the great influence of the media can’t be denied. The media can release news so fast that we can know more about our community and people, and even help each other. We will keep working on our TV station and build up the news release system for our community. And we wish this learning experience can be the preparation of being “real” news journalists in the future!
