Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Our school is located at the south of Haxi Twon Tianzhu Country Gansu Province. A lot of mountains are around, the trees are flourishing, is a good place of study. The people in six villages are in mountain areas around. They try to fight with, weather, land and themselves to conquer poorness. They hold hope of education on their children. Students here have poor condition in study, but work hard, so they have good marks. No matter rain or snow, they walk on the hill path with their swollen feet. They are never late or come home early. The pine trees are all over the mountains and plains, which seems the studying spirit of the students.

2. Summary of Our Project

The topic of 'Children in mountain striving for the opportunities to go to school' is fixed according to geography environment of the region and the students’ study condition. Our school is located in the deep Qilian Mountain. The children get up early to go to school by turning over mountain. They have strong desire to study and the parents also hope education could change their poor condition. The study marks at graduation are always in the front of the students in our school. This is inseparable with their learning spirit. Their assiduous and strong enthusiasm for seeking knowledge moved the teachers in school and also moved ten thousands of kind hearted people outside. Pay attention on their hard learning process, we observe and research on them in difficult processes. We made survey on their pre-school, at school, outside school conditions. With time passing on, children in mountain grow up gradually and their destiny, lives all has deep changes. They respectively make a living by different ways. What is in front of them, hope, happiness, confuse, or hardships? …

Because our school is in mountain area, and for economic limitation, our school can only access to Internet with telephone line. In addition, the school has only four computers accessing to internet. Teachers and students attend this activity have no own computers. We have to make use of spare time to complete

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Our school has been the member school of Qian Xiang Wan Cai for about two years. But it is the first time we participate this web page match. Shortly after registering, we several teachers who attended 2007 summer season web page big match discuss together to fix the subject. We choose 'Children in mountain striving for the opportunities to go to school' among several ones. It is very suitable. We are located at the foot of Qilian Mountain; it is difficult for us to receiving schooling. In the spring and summer we can go to school under little sunlight. In autumn and winter, we can only go to school and go home with stars in the sky. As teacher of these children, we can only try our best to help them in study. At the moment of this match, we will publicize the hardship for schooling of the children in mountain. After fixing the topic, classmates begin to collect some pictures and some materials of students going to school. The classmates are very earnest. They make use of spare time settle these materials and write down as match diary. After more than one month, our material is enough and we begin to design frame of web page. At the beginning of September, we put the frame on internet and hope for the directions given by Miss. He. She says we have chosen a good subject, which can reflect our local student circumstances. She also gives us be some precious opinions. We have a target after listening to her suggestions. With the subject of 'Children in mountain striving for the opportunities to go to school', we tidy up materials and data. The students are more interested in this job. Then we get strong support from Miss Zhang Yinghua. Under her direction, the process is smoother. In a word, attending this web page match, what we create not only a work but heavy care and love.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Through activity, we only finish our web pages creation, more important we apply the knowledge learned from textbook activities. In the activity, the interview object is the most important. To choose the representative ones, we used statistics learned in mathematics to make statistical chart and then choose the subjects. After interview, we ask Chinese teacher how to write good survey repeatedly. In the process of creating a web page in, we still used map, In the process of making web page, we make use of map, and line out longitude and latitude to identify the position in detail, and mark the position of Haxi town on the map. The end stage in creation is just the reviewing time at school. In order to complete the task without affecting study, we decide to let students input characters on computer lesson. In such way, we combine the normal courses to this activity and raise student's interest in the activity and study greatly.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

The members of the team are less. At the first, the most people at don't know what we are doing. They only see we take a pictures everyday continuously, and interview continuously. To inform them what we are doing, we decide to introduce toward everyone with the form of blackboard report. We totally make three periods’ blackboard reports. Then most of them know what we are doing. When interviewing, in order to make them cooperate with us, we introduce web page exposition first to them, and then introduce our condition. Then they will be glad to accept our interview.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

In our interview, collecting material, we are paid attention by superior leaders, they think our web pages contents can go deep into the basic circumstance of the region and request us hereafter attend more of activities like this, for education is managed by people and good education can benefit people. By our publicizing, a lot of benevolence personages come to my school to visit and make survey. Being teachers we should do more on this aspect. There are a lot of teachers and student joining us and help us a lot.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We have only 6 members in our group, while in the making process, we get help from many people. At the beginning, we do not know how to make web page frame. Miss Zhang Yinghua and Miss He Xiaosong help teach us how to make a frame of web page. And in process of making web page, Mr. Zhang Yinghua and Mr. Peng Haina often give us suggestions. During creation, when having problems on technique, we will ask teacher Li Changlin, he helps every time. Once, the web page has some problems at the time of showing and we turn to him. He was working till 1:00 P.M. from the afternoon. At the end, he found out reason. For helping us, he sometimes gives up rest time. And many others provide us with endless help. We complete the activity under their help.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

We know more about the study circumstances of related students through this subject plan research. We show some living conditions of their pre school, at school and stopping school. We also publish this activity in school to let the students cherish their condition. Let the outside peoples also deeper understand the circumstance of children in the mountain area, and give hands to help these children.
