Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

The forests conserving water of Qilian Mountain cultivate Hexi Corridor which is also the mother of Hexi Corridor. However, for a long time, some people have destroyed the forest in consideration of economic profits. As the protector of these forests, Xiama Forest is responsible for maintainming the balance of ecoenvironment.

2. Summary of Our Project

For the past several decades, the workers of Xiama Forest have spared no efforts working hard on this area. The forest has witnessed their hardships. It is these workers that make the forest develop, improve the ecoenvironment and increase the number of wild plants and animals. Through this web design competition, we want to introduce Xiama Forest in detail and call on people to protect environment.

There are three computers in school that can connecting to Internet. There is no computer in the home of the students.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

What is Xiama Forest used for ? In the beginning, we do not even know what Xiama Forest is used for. Every time we pass there, we only find it is magnificent. It seems rather secret to us. It takes our teacher a whole break to introduce to us what Xiama Forest is.

Embarrassment in interviews We have never interviewed other people, so when we interview Mr. Mao, we feel rather nervous and embarrassed. Thanks to the encouragement by our teacher, we begin to ask questions. Mr. Mao is very kind to us, so we become more than more confident. Later, when we go to the primary school to call on people to protect environment, we are not nervous at all. We can interview very relaxedly and give very good reports. We have overcome the difficulties in interviews.

In web design We have never designed web before, so we feel it rather difficult. With the guidance of our teacher, we become more and more familiar with softwares and learn to type and download. We have also learned how to design web pages. All of these experiences make us more confident of ourselves.

Limited time We are busy with our daily studies and homework. We have to work in computer classroom only in the break in the noon. Although we are very tired, we do not give up. We have to spend our weekends collecting materials, taking photographs and interviewing. The sorting out of materials and web designing are completed by our teacher and us in the evenings.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

This is the first time for us to attend the competition. We have learned a lot. We take it very seriously in the process. No matter what the result is, the activity is rather unforgettable. Through the research, we have learned how to communicate with others and we should have mutual trust of each other. We also owe our gratitude to many people. As long as we have tried, we will get what we want. We are very glad to share with you our work!

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

This research is rather different from what we have learned in class. Through this activity, we have learned how to collect materials, how to interview and how to sort out materials, all of which are of great importance to us in the future studies. We also find some shortcomings of ourselves. (1) We learn to make use of Internet and web design. (2) We learn how to learn autonomously and how to solve problems by ourselves. (3) We learn how to cooperate and coordinate with each other. (4) We learn how to communicate with each other and trust each other, which is of great importance to us.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

Through this research, we not only want to call on people to protect Xiama Forest, but also want to persuade people to protect the whole environment. As the missionaries, we want to spread the importance of protection of environment. Our family members, teachers and classmates are deeply moved by our action. We will try our best to make our contributions to protecting the forests.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

The research makes us know more about Xiama Forest, as well as the content of their work and the hardships of the workers. We also realize the importance of protection of environment. Xiama Forest protects others forests in Qilian Mountain and Hexi Corridor. We hope more people can pay attention to the protection of the environment. Through this research, we also learn how to communicate and cooperate with others.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We owe our gratitude to many people. We give our thanks to Xiama Forest for providing us with Annotations of Xiama Forest and other materials. We thank Mr. Mao in Xiama Forest for being interviewed by us and guiding us to visit in the forest. Many anonymous villagers are also interviewed by us and we thank them for their cooperation. All the teachers in our school show their great concern towards our activity, especially our headmaster who always encourages us and helps us.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

Through this activity, we get to know more about Xiama Forest, as well as the environmental values of the forest. In the process of the research, although we encounter some difficulties, we learn how to communicate and cooperate with each other. We also learn much knowledge that cannot be learned in class. We also find the potential of ourselves is limitless.
