Title: Hometown of Taoyuan-Jing Fu Temple

Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Located in northern Taiwan, Taoyuan county own unique excellent natural environment with mild climate and few natural disasters where most areas are platforms and plains. There was no proper medical cure for early immigrants in Taoyuan. If they were sick, They could only worship the Celestial Beings. Thus there emerged a need for building a temple(Jing-Fu Temple) in Taoyuan city. The worship for Jing-Fu Temple followed immigrants and make the temple developing into a regional religious belief center. That Jing-Fu Temple’s developed from humble beginnings and through hardship to well establishment is highly relative to that Taoyuan city developed into prosperity with peaceful ethnics and union defense. Besides ,the temple has reserved many cultural relics, architectural decorations, couplets and epigraphy which have witnessed the development history of Taoyuan City.

2. Summary of Our Project

No matter how much time have past and how human philosophies have changed, religious belief has always been critical in the common people’s livelihoods. Taoyuan City Jing-Fu Temple has reserved many stories. We wish to not only allow us to understand more about this historical relic of more than 100 years but also have some basic ideas about Taoyuan city development and progress in early periods. For demonstrating the preservation value of Jing-Fu Temple’s cultural relics, we hope to gain the most comprehensive understanding of Jing-Fu Temple by detailed investigation and records and diversifying analysis. We will introduce by classifying the data which we have collected into 6 major categories: architecture, religious belief, history, geography, social relationship, cultural relics as to introduce the beauty of the temple both completely.

There are 3 computer classrooms and more than 100 computers available for students in our school. All computers are quipped with internet access to enable students to make discussions, check data and print documents.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

In the beginning, we didn’t know how to proceed,even though we understood clearly that our research topic is enriched with research values,and can represent local features. Fortunately, we could get help from many teachers and enthusiasts outside of the school as to advance into the world of arts and understand thoroughly about each architectural detail and Opening the mind for arts,Let us understand thoroughly about temple architecture instead of giving only a passing glace at things. With the teacher’s directing, our teams discusses step by step by form a project structure. We have learned labor division from teamwork and team communication. We did meet lots of difficulties in making this project. We had experienced conflicts because of different opinions and webpage technology obstacles, and also having no ideas for how to write this project after brainstorming. However, we have always faced and conquered such a difficulty by teamwork power. *Technology Status:As team member had no sufficient technology, we thus worried that there was not sufficient time. Solution methods:Team Director Sin taught us how to make web pages. *Working hours Status:Only the time after school was available. Solution methods:Recording only the necessary data would save time and reach working efficiency. *Teamwork Status:Doing homework and also making web pages was really exhausting. Solution methods:Mutual encouragement. *Data Status:After each team member had collected lots of data of Jing-Ful Temple, how to read and analyze and how to accept and reject some data are a serious challenge. Solution methods:Our teacher invited many people to help us and each team member was learning hard. Everybody was thinking how to classify and to demonstrate data.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

We have learned knowledge which we had not understood before after this competition. No matter how times have changed or history has developed, the temple has always critical for the common people’s religious belief. In the beginning, we had no idea about the temple except worship. After this competition, we have understood the history, arts, culture and other values of the temple and hope that our website can help people cultivate emotion for loving our own hometown and being grateful for what our ancestors have done for us and remembering where our happiness originate from.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Involving in this competition has led us to concern for local environment and education and to improve school info, internet and native education and teaching. Chinese Linguistics: It was difficult to find data. After collecting data, managing data were found to be also a hard work. We have learned from this project how to find correct data and organize the data which we had spent lots of working on finding them and extract critical points from the data collection and word and font editions…….etc. Social fields: The topic we select is highly relevant to social course-history, geography and civil and also native education, arts and humanism quality. During the webpage production, we contacted various people, such as historians, religious believers, temple commissioner. We have learned how to communicate with various people. It is a great learning experience for us. We have learned mutual help and mutual trust and respect and concern from deciding the project theme, making plan and production which are indispensable for such a society emphasizing high labor division. Arts and Humanism Quality: We had never appreciated traditional architectural beauty like this time. We can understand comprehensively the temple architecture and decoration arts and their beauty and arts values via this project theme. Computer Homework: The best achievement from this project could be computer software application, especially webpage production. Although we had learned some computer courses in the school, we still were not familiar with some other software operation. We had never formally completed a webpage production with software operation. Especially we have learned a lot from integrating various application software.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We play the role exploration and use building a website to classify and introduce the data we have collected concerning the temple. Using our webpage as a medium establishes a channel for introducing unique values, architecture, arts and beauty of Taiwan historical relics to the international communities.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

In our school, many teachers who teach history, Arts and Humanism Quality use this subject in curriculum. In the beginning, many student had no idea about the temple except worship. Through the website, many student have understood the history, arts, culture and other values of the temple. By our website , people cultivate emotion for loving our own hometown and being grateful for what our ancestors have done for us and remembering where our happiness originate from.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We specially express thanks for Chen, Po-Chou’s, Shih, Ming-Huang’s and Kuo, Yun-Ching’s help. Our teachers didn’t only lead us to visit the Greatness Temple but also provide us lots of data. Mr. Chen, Po-Chou always carried lots of valuable relics to help us make data collection. Teacher Kuo, Yun-Ching was responsible for contacting the temple that we could enter some of the temple areas which are rarely open to the public. Our teachers, Chen, Mei-Chih and Feng, Shu-Chuan and Li, Gui-Ying made professional photography painstakingly for us and lent us the cameras.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

It has been discovered that every architectural decoration has its own interesting story. Every temple is telling a local history. Although all architectural decorations seem have shared the same theme, architectural artisan would add their own unique creation and ideas. After people’s professional explanation for us, some professional architectural knowledge are like secretes that are intensely interesting after being revealed. Meanwhile, some facilities, such as environment-.friendly incense burner and canopy shall be improved concerning their outer shape as not to retard the whole beauty of such a temple with extremely strong ancient features.
