Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Hualien County located at east coast of Taiwan, facing the immense Pacific Ocean in the east and leaning against the grand Central Mountain Range in the west, is famous for its majestic mountain scenery like East Rift Valley Scenic Area, Coastal Range and natural resource the “marble”. The Central Mountain Range obstructs the civilization of Hualien but preserves the natural and cultural resource from exhausted. The aborigines even become the owner and the protector of the indigenous cultures.

The Formosa Aboriginal Song and Dance Troupe moved the office several times and finally settled down in Chinan township in Shoufeng village of Hualien to continue the preservation and promotion of aboriginal culture. Shuofeng township is one of Amis residence, there is no clue to find out when the Amis immigrated in but the only information is that Amis were the pioneer to Shoufeng. Grounding here, makes the FASDT more approaching the aborigines and helpful for the development of aboriginal culture.

2. Summary of Our Project

When the Taiwan society impacted by the foreign cultures, a group of aboriginal youth felt enlightened to preserve the elegant folk, they learned the traditional song and dance and establish formally the Formosa Aboriginal Song and Dance Troupe in May 1991.

Through the help of expert and field studies to investigate the song and dance lively, then organized the collected information something like the “dictating teaching” by the tribal elders, researched, discussed and practiced time after time, thereby the performance accomplished to be on the stage perfectly.

The FASDT insists to present the most original aborigine culture to the audience by constant research and development. Up to hundred rounds performance had been carried on including the tour to Europe, America and other Asian Country for extending the aboriginal culture overseas.

After 5 stages of evolution on the purpose of preserving the aboriginal spirit, to be multi-functional and everlasting, the FASDT established “Formosa Aboriginal Song and Dance Troupe Foundation” in June 2001. Faidaw Fangod and Watan Tusi are leading the troupe on the right way toward the ideal target.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Problems to be overcome for first attendance of the international Cyber Fair happened like following:

1.Skills need to be improved: the students were not familiar to the design of website pages, Teacher Jien-Shuen must train the students of cyber knowledge from zero.

2.Shortage of time: Both the students and teachers need carried routine class in the day-time; the available period is each duty-off time after class or the holidays.

3.Coordination was important: Different opinions were usual problem, the teachers responsible for the judgment to pickup better ideas.

4.The clarifying of Information: Lot of information were repeated, we had to select the information from the publications, internet carefully and the interview from FASDT directly.

5.To rehearse before interview: since lake of experience about interviewing the object, we list the questions previously, made the rehearsal many times to make sure the interview will be going on smoothly.

6.The lake of experience: Without former attendance to international competition, we learn from the sample articles and survey on the internet, tried and tried by ourselves.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

To attend the International CyberFair means some points – the students learned how to accomplish a website, to observe the quality of other attendants, “Are they strong? Or weak?” makes the students found themselves and improve themselves, by the way to realize the aboriginal culture and to carry the FASDT as well as Taiwan aboriginal spirit to the world.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

The members in this project are those who majoring in Information Management, the subject includes language, IT and business class, through the contest, the students practice an actual website for examining what they have learned.

From this project they have learned how to build the website, collect the information and marketing coordinately, the most important conclusion is the determination of FASDT who has created a numerous of miracles.

Less practice is the weak point of current education system, the students of Information management need to accept more practical train for being the pioneer of the academy.

Compared to traditional way, internet has to be appreciated for its convenience to collect information, and efficient sharing.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

30 PCs, 1 vertical server, 15 mobile phone sets, 2 digital recorders, 2 digital cameras, 6 softwares and 1 interview had been coordinated to achieve the project.

Except the PC and mobile phone are personal belongs, others are the asset in the class room of school.

Computer and the software are the most valuable assets but the technique did play the leading role to complete the project.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

As soon as fix the topic, the students asked Teacher Tan-Ya-Ting and Mr. Faidaw Fangod for engaging interview of the FASDT to Hualien. The members won an unforgettable experience to work together, sleep together in the studio of FASDT and to take a night train together. To get familiar with the dancers, they participated one day training to understand that the hard work makes a perfect performance.

They were nervous and excited to attend this international competition and very proud of telling people what they were doing and earned the admirable eye form the classmates.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

We got lively from the book and pushed ourselves to the big challenge, to be the pioneer, we expect the students could join the project more eagerly.

In our pages, people could see the beauty of FASDT, at the mean time we hope foreigners could know the character of Taiwan indigenous culture as well as the FASDT.

We got closer in this interview. They totally supported us to accomplish the project and continuously care about what’s going on. Additional, the school also concentrated on how we advanced.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Teacher Faidaw Fangod has been invited to be the trainer of aboriginal song and dance in Jinshan Senior High School for the aboriginal arts class. Therefore many students had ever joined the training or performance of FASDT and get along with the dancers well so that the FASDT dancers and leader help us with hospitality to receive our interview and offer the photos, all the information we got are the first hand. Teacher Tan-Ya-Ting also offered plenty of information and photos since she was the former pianist in FASDT. We have to forward the highest appreciation to Mr. Faidaw Fangod and Mr. Wadan Dusi and the team for the wonderful achievement of the project

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

Some difficulties happened: poor facility with internet, no idea with website, never interviews someone, unable to coordinate the information and so on. The knowledge had been learned at the class but seldom practiced in reality. In this opportunity, the students fulfill the study into the practical. Owing to the process, we found the FASDT’s insistence of effort for aboriginal spirit is such admirable and really surprised by the appealing culture of Taiwan aboriginal song and dance!
