Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Zuoying District is in the north of Kaohsiung City. It is a famous scenic spot in southern Taiwan, such as, Lotus pond, Panpingshan (Mt. Panping), Confucius Temple, Dragon and Tiger Pagodas, and so on. Formerly, the name of Zuoying derives from the meaning of camping in the left of the town. Being the younger generation of Zuoying Town, we also hope to do something for our hometown, so we choose the topic to make some researches on the markets here. On one hand, we want more people to get a better understanding of this place and call on more people to make contributions to our town. Through the researches on the current situation and the existing problems of the markets, we put forward our suggestions as a valuable reference for the Tzu-You evening market. . Long time ago, the venders sold the goods left from the morning market on the street sides, the quality was worse than that in the morning market and it also increased traffic jam and environmental problems. In order to solve this, the management association built the Tzu-You evening market. Tzu-You evening market is located in Cai-Gong village where between the Taiwan’s biggest Village, Fu-Shan and Aozihdi re-planning district. The Expressway (EXPWY) and freeway had made people travel to northern Kaohsiung more easily and these advantages made Tzu-You become Kaohsiung’s biggest evening market.

2. Summary of Our Project

Zuoying Evening Market is our project topic. Zuoying is a traditional evening market opened from 4pm till approximately 8pm. It is located at Ziyou 3rd Rd., Zuoying Dist., Kaohsiung City 813, Taiwan (R.O.C.). In this project, we try to find out the business operation mode of the vendors and why people choose to buy goods from the evening market instead of from other sources. For example, what makes Tzu-You evening market outstand and attract customers in this competitive circumstance? And which of the below business type is really related to “daily necessity of the central city”, supermarket, mall, or evening market?

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:21-50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:2-3

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

Through broadband Internet access in our school’s computer room and all members’ home, we search relevant information. We have also uploaded our reports through FTP. We normally check each other’s progress with email and MSN. So we fully utilized contemporary technological equipments to finish this report.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

At the time, when teacher told students there were 200 copies of survey need to be done, no one thought it was difficult until they really do it. The reasons why the target population not intends to do the survey: 1. Have an urgent matter. 2.Need to go home and cook.3. JUST DON’T feel like to…The parts that students need to improve: 1. Should introduce ourselves first by saying “Hello, we are Fushan junior high’s students…” instead of starting with “hi, Can I borrow you some time?” which may attract the target population with more interests. 2. We should prepare more pens; if we met a group of people at one time then we could have everyone do the survey at the same time. 3. We should help carrying the Survey Responser’s bag when the person is doing the survey. 4. More smiles. Besides, most of the team members learned to design webpage at the first time and they were unfamiliar with webpage techniques as well as overall architecture which was quiet a challenge to all of us. As a consequence, it did affect our overall outputs

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Teacher hopes that this project could help the Tzu-You evening market management association about the system analysis of the evening market. Therefore, we want to promote related knowledge in our school and communities, in order to serve as a responsible “ambassador”. Now, we hope that this meaningful project, as well as our achievement and joy, could be shared with people around the world.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

We choose Tzu-You evening market as our topic to learn about the shopping habits of our community members by knowing our community and our future expectations. We also hope to do something for our hometown, so we choose the topic to make some researches on the Tzu-You evening market. On the one hand, we hope more people to get a better understanding of them, and call on more people to visit our Tzu-You evening market.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

Interview is the most important job through the project. During the interviews, we got to know how to organize the information and present them in a thoughtful way. Our group had a 10 minutes discussion after every interview. And we also learned how to conduct the interviews with the prior discussion about the interview questions. At the moment, we have obtained support from the school and are preparing to have web pages translated into English to participate in the International School Cyberfair. It is our hope to have more people understands and visits the Tzu-You evening market.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

First of all, Tzu-You evening market management association recognized a lot of our conclusions: such as, Can bargain the price, Huge parking space, Directly from the origin place, have to be sold out one day, The environment is dirty and crowded…,etc. Moreover, during the interviews, we had collected many vendors’ thoughts, such as, what’re their advantages, drawbacks...Etc. and this information can also helps them to better known themselves and taking necessary adjustments if needed. Most importantly, through the channels of Taiwan schools CyberFair and international schools CyberFair, we can bring more people to understand and visit the Tzu-You evening market.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Through our project, we would like to show our gratitude to many people who helped us. Thanks for our teachers for their guidance. We would like to pay special thanks to all venders to accept our interviews and provide us information which enabled us to complete our project and establish the website. Of course, there are still people whom we owe thanks; our teachers Yeh, Ching-i and Liao Yu-ting who provided us with project materials; teacher Lv, Chun-qi and Lv, Ya-ting who helped us take English contents revised; and teachers Wang, Yi-wen and Zhang Xing-cai who translated the materials to sign up for the international Cyberfair, etc. We would not have completed the webpage without your support and help.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

I found team work is an important and more efficient way of doing things through this project. It’s impossible to construct a website by one self; thus, we have to work with some other people. In terms of that, it means one has to finish his/her own part on time so to keep the whole project on schedule. Sometimes, I found myself being slow and not able to make it on time and it often turns out that I still have to spend my own leisure time finishing it to avoid possible project delay. So, I have to work harder when I work within a team. It is amazing to see what we have been done; Not only we have sense of achievement, but also we can see the whole picture which we are not able see if we work separately. By working as a team, we are so happy and proud for what we have been done together.
