Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Our country, Kaohsiung, is full of sunshine, located in south Taiwan, and is the second metropolitan center in Taiwan. Kaohsiung is a well-known significant place for industrial, commerce and ocean capital. Because of having natural resources and convenient transportation system, it is developing a sightseeing form of ocean recreation now.

Coming to Kaohsiung with friends, you would find that this is a city full of sunshine, ocean and friendships. Let us go and enjoy its warm reception.

2. Summary of Our Project

Enormous cargo ships drive into the Kaohsiung Harbor slowly; Waves sparkle in the golden sunlight; The street, Duchuanton old street, beside this harbor satisfies gourments with its specialty 'Kaohsiung Big-Ice'

The Big-Ice, a huge bowl contained ice, is a famous and unique dessert in Taiwan. Its special is rich ingredients, fresh foods, and super weight for 30 people to eat. By sharing the Big-Ice, not only the love between family, lovers or friends becomes closer, but also a good method be used to relieve summer heat in Kaohsiung.

Our research through visits and investigations wants to understand the culture of the Big-Ice. We do hope that our study make more people know the Big-Ice; furthermore, it would enable a large increase in tourism of Kaohsiung.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

School There are two computer classrooms and 80 computers offered for students at our school. All researchers can have internet

access, find the data, and print the documents at the computer classrooms.

Home All researchers are using internet access of ADSL, e-mail box of school, internet hard disk, and webpage of class after

school to continue researching work by finding the data and conveying the file.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Interview Problems Interview is an important topic of our project, because we want to know more about the Big-Ice. For time is limited, how to get in touch with those people and how to translate those recording contents of interviews are difficult work. In addition, transportation is also a big problem for us!

Solution Three teachers helped us get in touch with shops. Every researcher has to use the morning to interview, but they have to take the regular class. Luckily, the teachers of regular class would rather send them out to interview, as long as they hand in homework later.

We had a long way to get to those places, and needed time to go. We took teacher Wu's M-car, and everyone squeezed into the car. That's how we solved our problem of transportation.

Researching Time Problems The eleven researchers scattered into different classes of sixth grade, we only can meet each other at our gifted class (three times a week). It's so hard to find the good time to research together, so we use the morning before all classes or lunch time to go to the computer room to finish our research. But there are one or two researchers who can't come with us sometimes. We are going to enter junior high school, the schoolwork s becomes more and heavier, the progress is slow and the homework isn't finished.

The most difficult obstacle in producing is pressure of our school work, especially during the examination, we couldn't even continue researching. There is plenty of homework, we are like candles burning at both ends.

Solution Teachers will discuss the progress and allocate the works after class, and researchers encourage each other, we will deal with the difficulties to accomplish our job.

Data Allocation Problems Because there are very few related materials about “Kaohsiung the Big-Ice”, we didn't know how to start our project and how to collect data.

Solution Before making a webpage, we categorized the webpage into the Big-Ice history, the shops, research diary, and happiness of eating ice, and then we started compiling and collecting data according to each items. Two of us to be a group to find the information. The immense data became orderly.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Before studying, we considered that the Big-Ice was just a dessert in hot summer. After many interviews on shops and customers, we found that the procedure of making it was difficult and complicated. It turns out that a delicious “Kaohsiung Big-Ice” needs plenty people's efforts. Although Kaohsiung Big-Ice is unable to become a souvenir taken home, it is the best product for keeping family's or friends' relationship: sharing a Kaohsiung Big-Ice, enjoying the beautiful ocean, chatting each other. Via our study, we hope more people to know Kaohsiung Big-Ice's deliciousness and its merit; moreover, we expect it would become a spokesman of Taiwan.

In addition, we learn how to cooporate. Definitely, there are three beautiful teachers of gifted education who led us into CyberFair world carefully although they were very tough. They taught us how to use digital camera, recording pen…etc. equipment, and instructed us the skill of speaking and interviewing, which we can't learn from class. Finally, we want to say “Thank You” to everyone who was involved with CyberFair researching! We really appreciate it.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Language Art From collecting data, making questions, compiling web diary and progress report, to interviewing and conforming, all improved our ability to analyze, induct, arrange, and write. Social Studies During the process of interviewing the community, we cared and learned more about humanities to build our love to our society. Mathematics During the process of researching, the rate of ice and syrup is related with the 'rate' we learned from math. Science & Technology Internet access, computer using, interview recording, video recording, digital camera using, and webpage making can cultivate our ability of good using of technology. Health & Physical Education Via the interviews, we had learned how to arrange working time and how to communicate with people. Our harvest from the study help us develop healthy personality and habits. Arts & Humanities In practicing and interviewing all shops, we appreciate the scenery of Kaohsiung. Integrative Activities Through researching, we cooperated with one another, communicated, and encouraged as team power to accomplish the goal.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Technology equipment Telephone:Contact with group members to discuss the interviewing. Computer:Paper working , webpage making, video making, Teaching exampling, data transmitting. DV Recorder:Photo taking Digital Camera:Photo taking Classic Camera:Photo taking Scanner:Scan picture and photo Recording Pen:Record Interviewing voice Tape Recorder:Record Interviewing voice Microphone:Record Interviewing voice Printer:Print the words or photo Dry Battery:Record the voice and take photo Memory stick, MP4:Save the data

Computer software Macromedia Dreamweaver:Compile the webpage and manage Macromedia Flash:Make flash PhotoScape, Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro:Manage photos ACDSee:Manage digital photos Microsoft PowerPoint:Manage porject file Microsoft Word:Manage words file Internet Explorer:Overview the webpage, check the date, send and download the data Open Webmail:Contact with group members, hard disk

Those tools help us to construct our web efficiently and make our web shows perfectly. Many of them are the first time that

we use them. We took much time to study what's the usage of them.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

During the process, after setting the research guideline and confirming the direction, all team members collected data of

Kaohsiung Big-Ice from the internet or Nanzih library. Although we got some data of making the Big-Ice, there is a little

related data about the history of Kaohsiung Big-Ice. Interviews are necessary, and we not only interviewed shops, but also

interviewed many customers about theirs taste of the Big-Ice.

For learning more, the teachers even arranged an interview with a Li-Zhang(the head of a subdivision of the district), Ms.

Hong, Cai-Ai-Yu.

Via experiencing an activity of Big-Ice DIY, we experienced the delights of sharing a Big-Ice. By this CyberFair, we

introduce this delicious dessert Kaohsiung Big-Ice, and hope more people to be fond of our community.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

To Us During this research, what we learned is not only webpage making, but also “the attitude”, including patience, hardworking

and responsibility of collecting data, etiquette of interviewing, communicating with group members, and even time

controlling.

In addition, we changed the impression of the Big-Ice. Not only it is a delicious dessert, but also it plays an important

role to keep close bond between person and person. To our surprised, the Big-Ice is acting a great meaning in Kaohsiung

tourism because of its popularity.

To the Community Kaohsiung Big-Ice is quite famous early. Many tourists never forget to taste it while they visit Kaohsiung, so 'Big-Ice' has

become one popular keyword of Blogs. We hope that people know more Kaohsiung Big-Ice by our study; therefore, they will taste

this delicious food and appreciate the beautiful ocean while they come to Kaohsiung.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Instructing teacher Teacher Shu-hui Chen, Teacher Shu-Mei Wu, Teacher Shu-Fen Wang

1.Open group meeting 2.Set monographic plan 3.Offer data and direction 4.Arrange interviewing process 5.Instruct and check webpage

1.Offer data 2.Offer photos of activity 3.Help to make the webpage cartoon 4.Participate in the activity

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

Duchuanton old street is always packed with people and cars during summertime. Before participating this study, we had never

thought why Kaohsiung Big-Ice is so famous, but through the study, we found and understood the reason. Being a famous

specialty, Kaohsiung Big-Ice is produced by everybody's effort; therefore, we should continue the efforts to make more people

be fond of such wonderful food.

What we have learned from this research is to be honest to finish all works. Teachers discussed every step again and again

from setting plan, researching method dealing with data to results and references. We have learned the significance of

'responsibility in a group' and 'cooperation in a group'.
