Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Our community, Las Piñas City, is one of the most beautiful and highly urbanized cities across the Philippines. With its cleanliness and beauty, there is no wonder why it is included in the list of the “Clean and Green Hall of Fame” awarded by the Philippine government. Having gained many honors through the projects implemented in the community by our leaders, Las Piñas became one of the most multi-awarded city in the islands of the Philippines. It is not only rich in awards but also in culture. It is the home of the famed “Bamboo Organ” in St. Joseph Parish. Moreover, our community is celebrating many festivals yearly. One of which is the “Water Lily Festival”, that is celebrated only here in the Philippines every 28th of July.

2. Summary of Our Project

Our website is all about a festival in our community, Las Piñas City. Among the festivals in Las Piñas, we chose the “Water Lily Festival”. Our website highlights the history and activities held in this festival. The significance of water lily in our community is also cited in our website. In addition, we have included the products made out of water lily, which is one of the livelihood projects by our Congresswoman Cynthia Villar. We have put lots of picture of the festival and the water lily products in our Gallery section.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:4-6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

In making this project, we have encountered many problems. One of which is lack of time. We can’t just do a website overnight. It requires a lot of time to gather information, take pictures, interview people, encode, design and make the whole website. Moreover, since this project is required in only one subject, it means that we still have at least 8 subjects left. We need to do our other school works simultaneously with the preparation of our website. Thus, it was a very hard task shouldered upon us.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Together we make this project possible and together we aim to the top!

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Through this project, we were able to improve our knowledge about the history, culture and traditions of our community. We were also able to improve our communication and social skills through the interviews we’ve made. We improved a lot in making designs, concepts and creating the whole website. We were able to explore more about the softwares that we’ve used in making this website such as the Dreaweaver, Flash and Adobe Photoshop. We also improved in translating English words to Filipino words and we were able to express ourselves clearer.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Our personal computer was a very big help in making our project. In our computers, we have installed software that we needed in making the website. We used softwares such as Macromedia Dreamweaver 8 for creating the website, Macromedia Flash 8 for making the animation in our website and Adobe Photoshop for editing the images used in the website. We also used gadgets such as cameras and cameras for taking pictures when we interviewed the people in Prinza River, BF Resort Clubhouse and Las Piñas Arts and Crafts Center.

We have gathered some of the information of our website through the internet. There were news about the festival in the Official Site of Las Piñas and the Official Website of Congresswoman Cynthia Villar. Also, we had a personal interview with the weavers making the baskets used in the festival.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

Through our personal interview with the people involved in the festival, we have acted as ambassadors for our Cyberfair project. We did not only represent our Cyberfair project but our school, as well. We went to different places and met a lot of different people. It was really a good thing that these people are very friendly and hospitable. They’ve welcomed us with open arms. We’ve asked a lot of questions regarding our topic and they’ve answered us very well.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Our project made a huge impact to our community. Many people coming from different places in the Philippines gather to witness the said festival. Through our project, we are advertising the Water Lily festival, and now it is well known by other people, from children to adults. We helped in making Las Piñas more progressive in terms of tourism and economy

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

In gathering information, we have asked for the help of many people. We asked the permission of the officers in the Clubhouse to let us gather information for the festival and they approved of it. Also, the weavers that we have interviewed are very friendly and accommodating. They have answered our questions well. Without these people, our website will not be complete. Almost all of the information we have put in our website are the information we got from them.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

This is our first time in doing a website that will be our school’s entry for the Cyberfair competition. In making our website, we learned and discovered a lot of things. All of us became one in making this project and, thus, made us a lot closer. Not only did we discovered all about the Waterlily Festival, which is our topic, but we also discovered a lot from each of the member of the group who participated in making this website possible. We learned the value of teamwork.

We learned that there are still a lot of things, which our community- Las Piñas City can be proud of. In fact, this Waterlily Festival is really amazing. Out of a not-so-useful waterlily, Las Piñas residents were able to make a livelihood project, which is the basket weaving. The basket created were made of dried waterlilies.
