Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Sahgnyi county lies in the southern part of China, northern Mongolian Plateau. The ground is vast. The county's total land area of 2632.47 square kilometers, equivalent to about 394.87 mu, including 116.22 mu of cultivated land. The earth is suitable for developing agriculture, animal husbandry and forestry, especially for farming.

2. Summary of Our Project

Koumo mushroom industry has been listed as one of the four leading industries in Shangyi County. Shangyi koumo keeps wild taste and flavor when it is cleaner than wild mushroom. Full of healthy substances, koumo is named “prairie pearl and the king of mushrooms”.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:less than 20

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:2-3

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:not sure

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:2-3

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

In 2007 our school accessed to the Internet via a dialup. Now we have 3 servers and 70 clients that connected to ADSL broadband at the speed of 1M. The computers have installed windows systems. Three classrooms have been equipped with internet access. We selected three students who grasped networking techniques better than other children. They used their information technology and network knowledge participating in this project under the institution of tutors

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

For the first time to participate in this charity event, we were a small group of people in the beginning. Many teachers and students didn’t know our work but taking photos. We promoted our activities through campus radio and most people in school understood us.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Three members of our group interviewed local peasants and learned cultivating methods. They were surprised to know a story of mushroom at an old man’s home. It was edited to be a story of western China named Koumo Complex for teachers by Mr. Zhang later.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Our textbooks have complied information and materials about local mushroom products like edible mushrooms and vegetables. Our students can get further understanding about mushrooms through visiting koumo planting base. In order to make koumo known by all around the world, we took advantage of the techniques we have learned organizing website pages and introduced koumo industry through internet.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

In 2007 our school accessed to the Internet via a dialup. Now we have 3 servers and 70 clients that connected to ADSL broadband at the speed of 1M. The computers have installed windows systems. Three classrooms have been equipped with internet access. We selected three students who grasped networking techniques better than other children. They used their information technology and network knowledge participating in this project under the institution of tutors

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

For the first time to participate in this charity event, we were a small group of people in the beginning. Many teachers and students didn’t know our work but taking photos. We promoted our activities through campus radio and most people in school understood us.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Local people provided us great support when we collected information and did interviews. Our plan to set a website of koumo attracted much attention from people of koumo base and peasants planting mushrooms. They considered it a valuable program that could promote the industry of mushrooms in Shangyi. And our team benefited greatly by the whole activity. We are happy to acquire knowledge not from textbook but from experience of website construction

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

In this activity, our team visited koumo mushroom planting base and peasants’ family. We got a lot of support of them. Let me Take this opportunity to express our sincere appreciation and thanks to them! School leaders paid attention to our activity. Principal Wu organized us to search and study knowledge of edible mushrooms

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

This website construction activity shows that mushroom industry is a way to get rich for local peasants. We are proud of our green mushroom products. In the public welfare activities we enjoyed huge pleasure of helping other people. We fished constructing the website though we didn’t have any experience of competition, which leaded to lacking of new ideas and creation. This initial attempt will accumulate experience for following competitions. In the interview, we went to field and got to know peasants for the first time. They not only introduced planting method and nutritional value of mushrooms, but also genuinely hoped us advertise local mushroom products. We were encouraged to learn the network technology and make a display of our local products and culture.
