Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Nowadays Er-kong was located in Jen De village Tainan County, composed by Jen Ai, Jen He and Cheng Gong villages. In the Japanese Colonial Period it was set for air force logistics supply and Servicemen families living. After KMT took back Taiwan, it retained Servicemen’s Residential Compounds and logistics function. The residents were mainly air force servicemen and most of them were from Sichuan and Hunan provinces. Until now, although the people still had troop’s characteristic, the branches of armed forces had not as simple as first generation; sea and land forces were included. The thing unchanged was the heavy Sichuan and Hunan accent which was a unique style that local and outside area residents kept for. Through a series of biding and coordinating conference preparation, Er-Kong new village reconstruction plan launched in November of Year 2007 operation broke ground ceremony. To see the demolition of constructions that accompanied you many years, the local residents felt strong sentiment to let go. Regarding future environment improvement and life style promotion, they had high expectation on it. It signified that Er-Kong area was going to have a new face and living space. The traditional Servicemen’ Residential Compounds tile roofs and the new buildings in Er-Kong new village appeared the different generation and culture.

2. Summary of Our Project

Y2007 was the year Er-Kong area changed fiercely. From that year, the whole Jen He village of Er-Kong area was almost laid flat. The replacement of the peaceful land was rumbling machine and huge truck that came and went frequently. It was planned to build several apartment houses with ten more stories after 3 years. The whole Er-Kong sky line and scene would have big transformation. There were a group of Er-Kong people keeping old friendships in mind. They could not reconcile themselves to see old memory gone so that they looked for available commodity in the remnant gravel and put them together. Therefore, the new construction carried on like a raging fire but the construction on the old tree in the park also carried on like a raging fire. A “dream come true Tree House” that was full of Er-Kong people memory was born by stacking piece by piece Jen He Elementary School Cyberfair team hoped to share this dream garden to public through the fair activity.

Even so, instructors kept to remind team members that when they enjoyed the convenience of internet, they needed pay attention on the details all the time and chose information carefully. To use convenient and safe tool to carry on the job duly was the formidable influence that internet generation brought about.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

*1-1:Contacted during vacation Most of the Er-Kong Tree House project webpage interview contents engaged in visiting and activities therefore we needed more time to carry on interaction and following data uniform. When project activities proceeded to the rear process, the winter vacation that lasted for one more month came. The connection and assembly were easy to be affected by the Lunar New Year. Students needed to think and plan more to make activities smoothly.

*1-2How to overcome Interview team members needed to confirm with each other the important interview dates in the advanced meeting and emphasized contacting issue in vacation in order to get available activity dates that most of members were able to attend. Also thanks to students’ families allowed students to participate in this School Cyberfair related activities and tasks in winter vacation.

*2-1:Many of moving interaction, not easy to collect information The Er-Kong Tree House Project interview process was proceeded under the Tree House opening style environment. Usually Mr. Huang Ru Long brought us back and forth to visit Tree House nearby environment so that the writing recording method used in the past was not easy to carry on under such condition. It was not that safe and convenient to listen and write at the same time after all.

*2-2:How to overcome Before interview on the spot, the team would hold meeting to set up interview questions and directions. During the process they used sound recording pen to record the dialogs in order to make the following webpage writing and edition easy. Doing so made students more concentrate on the activity at the same time reminding students paid attention on safety problem at each corner.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

“Er-Kong” was facing rebuilt process presently. Old style houses were superseded by new style severely. The valuable seniors in the village were fallen gradually. Jen He Elementary School was not able to do many change, we only hoped that through our endeavor we could throw in more concern to Er-Kong area. The project topic “Er-Kong Tree House” was different from the topic that traditional Er-Kong buildings were facing demolition. On the contrary, it presented rich appearance day by day. Therefore, based on positive mood and kind conception Tree House spirit, we hoped we could share the excellence of E-Kong to everyone through interviews and activities.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

In the process of project producing, when we recalled this problem, we found that the task of this role was carrying on in any moment. During the activities, visitors and passerby always looked at us curiously and asked “what were you doing? Oh~ that was how it was”. The Er-Kong Tree House drew people’s attention gradually in these two years. Jen He Elementary School was just few steps distance to the Tree House. The Cyberfair team hoped to introduce it to more people through the project activities and webpage and made people to protect and cherish our community. Moreover, we were not alone. In the activities process, many people grew up together with the Tree House. They produced paper works and photography records for the Tree House. For everyone’s effort, we had more power and enthusiasm to finish every task and overcame every challenge that School Cyberfair brought about.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

“Less and less people lived here”. Because of the reconstruction of Er-Kong Servicemen Residential Compounds in recent years, the enthusiastic greetings among crowed alleys reduced gradually. The community presented less vitality compared with the past. Therefore, we expected to deliver positive vitality of Er-Kong community to more people through the Er-Kong Tree House which drew more and more attention from public, and brought people here to experience Er-Kong’ friendliness and unique aroma that had never died.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

The participation and the assistance of local people were every important element to bring School Cyberfair successful. When local residents, lived nearby the Tree House knew our interview project, they provided the long-term observation experience of the Tree House and supplied many necessary types of equipment to us. Even more, when we built the Tree House, neighbors helped us cleaned and washed the place. Uncles shared with us the stories for each work. Many webpage contents were obtained by gathering exchanging information. The achievement was not made independently by Jen He Elementary School. There were so many local people behind working together with us to fight for this land and treasure our community.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

In the interview process, the enthusiasm to this land, the philosophy of life and the encouragement to team members, except the visible activities works, Mr. Huang Ru Long gave the School Cyberfair team the most precious experience and memory. The feeling did not need to be put it practice one by one orally. You could feel it through the team activities and the enthusiasm of the land. Even an activity like building little tree house, only through his concept to a tile, we could feel that it was a concentration and epitome of a feeling that Uncle Huang loved Er-Kong village. From the simple interview activities to work with Uncle Huang to throw our enthusiasm and devotion to the community, it surmounted our original setting and imagination. Er-Kong was not a community that had forgotten gradually since we were here to fell the community positive energy, a unique emotion and identification.
