Title: The magic and beautiful Heiquan Reservoir

Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Heishui Reservoir , 75km away from Xining ,is located at the Baoku River in the Datong Town belonging to the Huangshui Basin in Qinghai Province. The reservior which is a key water control project, is composed of barrage , diversion tunnel ,spillway and power plant , mainly for urban and rural irrigation supply and flood prevention and power generation in consideration. Its dame is made of reinforced concrete with the heighest of 123.5 meters . The upper reach of the drainage area reach 1044km2 and an average flow rate of 10.1m3 per second , ranging second of the dam of the same kind.An area of water of 5.26 square kilimeters reflects off the surface Qilian Snow Mountain afar and green mountains and valleys which reflect with each other and make them more bright and pure . All of these has made Gao xia gives smooth lake its vivid reflection. An area of water of 5.34 square kilimeters of the Heiquan Reservior reflects off the surface green mountains and valleys. When you take a boat and go in defiance , you will feel a brighter and purer view as white snow of the group mountain peaks afar reflect with the scenery in the vicinity , intergrating hardness and softness.

2. Summary of Our Project

The theme of our project is the study on the mysterious and beautiful Heiquan Reservior , mainly working for the shooting and interview of the spots , environment and protection as well as the gathering and classification of the information of the Heiquan Reservoir. Thanks to the supporte by the CISS company ,local residents ,companies and governments ,we got many information and materials .We tried to exprss our appreciation with our website . Thanks for this beautiful and plesant natural environment as well as the good cooperating spirit among our prople. We sticked to the spirit of cooperation and share of this Fair ,and hoped to share with people the wonder of the Heiquan Reservoir and our success , lessons and happiness.

Our school has only one computee room which do not have the network access and computers of our teachers and in the offices which are connected with the network while students do not have the access to the computers , letting off the network . As a consequence , we had a tight schedule , with many information and reference downloaded in the teachers’ offices after school and other works finishing in the computer room without network.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

1, Unstable school network . As our school network was connected by a single ADSL Proxy with all the other computers distributing this single one Proxy , the network was very slow and we usually waited for long time when downloading. 2, A tight schedule . Teachers had busy days due to teaching classes and we had our classes which could not be missed . Therefore ,we had to fight for the time and did our project in the leisuing time and a hour after lunch .This was still not enough , therefore , we took several weekends time to finish it . 3, Setbacks in the design . Since we were not familiar with many softwares , we had difficulties during the design . Fortunately , our teachers teached us to manipulate Photoshop and Dreamweaver software in the part time. 4, Lack of English proficiency . we were not high in english levels and the committee required an english version work . Therefore , we had to turn to our english teachers and teachers from CISS . We appreciated it .

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Looking back to this month ,we experienced a lot , both sweetness and bitterness , and we also learnt a lot . We went to the spot personally and interviewed villagers several times to make more people know Heiquan Reservoir in our hometown , see the beautiful and original natural environment . What’s more , we wanted more people to realize the precious and shotage of the water resources , appealling to protecting , cherishing and saving water . Although our power were weak , we had passed this strength to the children in our hometown . For more than a month , we lost a lot but got more toward a common goal .

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

We showed the environment and beautiful scenary of our hometown mainly focused on the Heiquan Reservoir.This project was a milestone and of symbolic meaning since it was launched against the background of promoting a comprehensive new course reform program in the Datong Town. During the process , the studens not only showed great enthusiasm and experienced a different learning experience as they had the chance to combine the school knowledge with their practices under the guidance of the teachers , especially those four students who participated in the webpage design as they learnt the skills to design and classify the information. Though they were green hands , they understood that no pain , no gain. Meanwhile ,we learnt group spirit and enchanced our friendship by encouraging and communicating with each other when we designed and interviewed. Many people offered their help in this process , therefore , we learnt to show our affection and care to others with a lenient heart and we will keep this in mind .

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

It was our responsibility and hornor to make more people know our beautiful hometown by playing the role of ambassadors. Based on the stasticics and questionares we made by ourselves , we conducted investigation among people .By distributing questionaires to students and local residents , we hoped to arouse their attention to protect the existing water resources as the water shortage in our country . Uploading our webpage on the internet would also make more people know our hometown Datong Town in Qinghai province.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

The study of this project not only increased our sense of our beautiful hometown but the potential concerns that existed behind it . We also tested our will and forged our mind by writing the report , designing the webpage ,collecting the information ,classification and discussion. All these were precious lessons .Meanwhile , our work has been consentd and complimented by the local residents and related personnels when we communicated with them during the study process.Through our promotion , we hoped that more people would protect this hard- earnd Heiquan Reservoir as we would be happier in mind seeing a more beautiful hometown.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Thanks for Li zhihua, Lu qing etc toSupport us on technology. Thanks for Director wang to Provide precious information about Hequan Reservoir for us, write a letter of introduction for us so we can shoot on the dam and get more materials. Thanks for Wang yongsheng to Introduce somethings about Heiquan Reservoir. Thanks for Ma zhanjun etc. to tell some stories and legends of HHeiquan Reservoir

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

We knew some new things and knowledge on the water resources with the progress of the project , enabling teachers and students to consider and cherish more about their future. We caugth in the trouble of mutual coopertation during the study and overcame it after we tolerated and encouraged each other by understanding that our project could not proceed before communication and responsible sense.
