Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

The geographical distribution of Taiwan has been very well since the old times. It’s situated between the Pacific Ocean and China, so there were many harbors at the seacoast, one of which is Kaohsiung. At first, Kaohsiung was called “Da Gou”. Japanese changed “Da Gou” into “Kaohsiung” by Japanese. Japan started to make Kaohsiung become a little-scale harbor-city for colonizing Southeast Asia. Therefore, it becomes the second biggest city of Taiwan.

2. Summary of Our Project

We studied Ciaotou again and looked back on its rise and decline. We found it changing ceaselessly and the conventional industry, sugar, also rose and declined with it. While we looked at this place from the history, we can’t let it be forgotten or it may disappear from the world. We hope to hand down these old stories, and let Ciaotou be remembered.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

Our Internet environment: School: Computer Classroom (100M), wireless network (54M) Students: Members home Jieyou network (in between 2 ~ 10M)

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

? Progress Control: At first, we couldn’t think a good topic, and we even picked up the wrong topic. Therefore, we are lagged behind the schedule. After discussed thoroughly with teachers and listened to their advice, we were getting on track finally. ? Cooperation division of work: Because we are short-handed, we can’t share our works easily. It made the place messy. Through connecting and knowing everyone, we found what we are good at our works. ? Team Communication: At first, we don’t know each other. It made us can’t talk with each other. The place was awkward. Through connecting and knowing everyone, we know each other little by little. ? Technical barriers: Because we do not have enough students in the group of managing documents, we can’t hand in our scripts in time. So we tried to write the article with the students of technical group. After working hard, we finally caught up with the ideal progress.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

BBecause of the Cyberfair, we have got to understand our land. Because of the Cyberfair, we have got closer to our land. Because of the Cyberfair, we have grown to love our land. Truly, without the Cyberfair, We could not have discovered the beauty of this land.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

I remember the saying of Bacon. We should not be like the ant; only collect food! Not like a spider; only snag from his belly; but like bees; be sorted after collection, digestion! This can be the beginning of sweet honey wine. We will apply their knowledge and textbook knowledge to our experience. Participating in Cyberfair is the best path The incomprehensible words of the text make us can't understand it easy. Fortunately, through site visits, we are more close to the local people and things. Each visit, we enhance the experience of ourselves and communication, adaptability, and think about the hidden meaning, which we are unlikely to learn at school.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Computers are the must to sort out all documentation, to type essays, as well as set up a web site. Apart from computers, we contact one another with instant messages. When we conduct interviews, we use digital cameras and voice recorders. Aside from these technical gadgets, we also use computer softwares provided by the school: updating websites with FTP, make animation and websites with FLASH and NAMO, edit images with Photo impact, making PowerPoint slides with flash slideshow maker, and edit videos with videostudio.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

As we choose our theme to be Ciaotou sugar factory, we take it with an archaeological way, to tell the bright time that Ciaotou had had. Form the soil of Ciaotou, we smell the sweat and tears in the soil that also mixed with a touch of sweetness. It seems to tell us a very, very old story; old farmhouse, the vast sugarcane fields are vivid, as if to tell us this was a bustling town. Unfortunately, the staff has not, we had to rely on the monuments and the elder left the story, memorable past. I hope this scene will not be forgotten! Hope that through this research to pass on the story!

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

By this opportunity, we understood our community more deeply, it also lets us learn many professional skills. We gained a lot of experience that textbooks will never give us. Our research projects, including geography, history, transportation, cultural affairs, and sightseeing, are represented through images and words in order to introduce Kaohsiung to a more people.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Because we are short-handed, seniors and teachers help us make contact with personnel of Ciaotou. The seniors let us pick up skills quickly, so we started off soon. At that noon, everybody was hungry when arriving Ciaotou. The person who welcomed us was an experienced man. He told us many things about Ciaotou which we enjoyed listening to. The interview was very successful.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

During the process, we have learned so many skills to get along with others. With this special experience, we broaden our horizons. We did the project together. By participating in the project, the relationship between group members has become stronger. We not only accomplished this goal, but also make friends with others. Everybody wrote articles bit by bit, and made the website little by little. Finally, all of us built our website successfully. Perhaps, it is our perseverance that let us accomplish our dreams.
