Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Shangyi County is in the southern edge of Inner Mongolia Plateau, which is located in northwest part of Hebei Province. The art history of Shagnyi culture. In the twentieth year of Guangxu (1894), the first Yangge Opera troupe had been formed. In the eighth year of Republic of China (1919), the folk artist Ye lu organized the first opera troupe named “Bengbenger”. At that time they had four actors. Then in the twelfth year of Republic of China (1923), the folk artist Chang youlu (stage name is Leng bantou) also formed a opera troupe which had 7 actors. More than 10 opera troupes were formed one after another in the county and 200 people engaged in this job till the twenty third year of Republic of China (1934). After the founding of People Republic of China, this opera has been innovated and well developed both in contents and forms. Zhangjiakou Bashang is the cradle land of Donglu duet opera.During the 140 years traditional history, it combined ancient folk orature with folk music of Bashang, having an art charm with short and lively story, rich and delicate emotion, wild and inhibited dance, and melodious and resounding tune. By the end of 1988, there were 34 amateur duet opera troupes in the county and 700 persons had engaged in this job. The duet opera was listed in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage till 2006, then the performances of duet opera was valued again.

2. Summary of Our Project

We have gained a lot, not only enlarged our knowledge, but also broaden our views all along the way. We not only learned a lot of computer knowledge, web design skills, and interview skills, but also got touch with the local native art “Duet Opera”. We have learned the development history of “Duet Opera” in this activity; we have understood how a rural person introduced “Duet Opera” to the market and moved to the big stage of CCTV; we also have known how Lufeng brought “Shangyi County Art Troupe” back to life by his own enthusiasm. We have gained a lot and thought a lot. The valuable experiences accumulated in this activity are our precious fortune in our whole life!

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:less than 20

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:1

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:2-3

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

1.The difficulty of visiting artist. As the auditorium of “Lufeng Art Troupe” are full of people, the number of performance are about 1000 times in a whole year, which averagely they have 2 or more than 2 times of performance one day in the surrounding areas of the county. It brought us such a difficulty to visit him. So we only could contact with Lufeng’s father. We and our tutors started immediately as soon as we had his news. 2.The time is limited. We are all students of grade 6 and we are facing the entrance exam of junior high school. We have no spare time to settle down and design the web except the time of having classes. So we only use the rest time between the classes and weekends to finish web design. 3?The problem of network. Due to there are many users in school, the network speed is very slow. In addition, there are few computers have Internet access in the computer room, moreover, we also have computer lessons, so the time we can use online is very little.

4.The problem of using computers. As the students who participated in the Network Fair are from rural areas, they are lack of knowledge of computer and Internet. To solve this problem, the school principal specifically requested the school computer teachers and tutors to train us and give guidance for us.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

This is our first time to participate in the Network Fair, we don’t have too much knowledge, no experience, and no confidence, but we have firm faith of victory and 2 tutors who are very eager to learn knowledge. We experienced a lot in the 2 months, with our concerted efforts, we had overcome the difficulties we meet and gained lot of happiness. We not only saw the charm of “Duet Opera”, but also knew a persevering “Artist”.If we can broadcast “Donglu Duet Opera” in the Network Fair and let more people to understand this art by our little work, we’ll be satisfied.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

We use “Duet Opera” as main line, highlighting the “Grass-roots” culture, not only combined with history, art, culture, computer and social areas but also combined with local teaching. We used “Duet Opera” culture into our lesson “Root” and “Local Music” in my school, which can be learned in the class and let students understand this local native art of their hometown. In order to broadcast our hometown and the “Duet Opera” by the Network Fair, we participated in the contest and let other people know this art.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Hardware equipment: computers, digital cameras, scanners, SD cards, card readers, flash disks, Macromedia Flash MX Softer ware: Photoshop, Microsoft Word, Internet Explorer, ACDSee, Ftp. Network: cross-netcom, email, website forum, FTP Server, ADSL broadband, CISS template.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

Lufeng persists in his business of duet opera in very hard situation, but he still pursues and explores. No matter how hard it is, he still persists in performing in order to reserve this art. He have overcome many difficulties and trained people for developing this art. Moreover, he stepped out of Zhangjiakou with this art and performed in the stage of CCTV for the audiences of the whole country where he could introduce this art to the audiences from the country and let more people know and understand duet opera, enhancing the popularity of Donglu duet opera and showing the elegant appearance of the artist from Zhangjiakou. Because his persistence, the duet opera have been back to life. I believe our team will broadcast this art very well with our concerted efforts, being a good “Ambassador of Duet Opera”.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Let more people know and love “Donglu Duet Opera”, enhance the popularity of Lufeng and many people come here to study with Lufeng. Many people spontaneously organized“ Mini Duet Opera Troupe” and performed in the streets; many old people formed “Old People Yangge Team” to dance Yangge in the streets… not only for cultivating a sentiment but also physical health.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

When we visited “Shangyi County Art Troupe”, many residents of community helped us. After many setbacks, at last, we found the troupe and Lufeng who is the head of the troupe. During the process of producing the project, whether adults or children they were all initiative to accept interview when we talked about Lufeng. Especially, we got lots of help from Lufeng’s father and we got many his stories from his father.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

We knew more and more things of “Duet Opera”, “Zhangjiakou Duet Opera”, “Shangyi County Art Troupe” and Lufeng as the development of the project we studied. We knew many stories that we haven’t heard before, it was the first time to let us contact closely with this special star of “6+1”TV show. Due to the first time for us to design the web, we have no experience, no views; we are lack of computer knowledge and not familiar with the project, so there are many places we need to improve. We let more people to know and love this local native duet opera art by our study of this project in a couple of months. Here, I hope the society will care for the development of the duet opera to make it become a bright pearl in the national culture.
