Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

HaiShi Bay is the location of the government of Honggu district and is the political, cultural and economic center of the region. It is where the world famous fossil Mamenx dinosaurs unearthed, and also a newly emerging modern satellite town, known as 'Babao River leader 'and the' Gansu Metallurgy Valley”. The Town of Haishi Bay is located in the middle of Lanzhou, Gansu and Qinghai, Xining, the two capital cities, each with a distance of 110 km. The 109 State Road and Lan-Qing railway across the whole territory of the town and made it the connecting roads of Qinghai-Tibet. The average elevation was 1770 meters, the annual average temperature was 7.1 ? -9.1 ? and the total area of 32 square kilometers, covering three administrative villages and five communities, with a total population of 35240, including 5370 rural population, the existing arable land was 3417 mu.

2. Summary of Our Project

Honggu District, the native haunt of Mamenchisaurus, has a long history of respecting and caring for the old men. After many discussion, we decided the “caring for the old man is to love ourselves” as our research subject. We mainly studied it from community nursing home, the health of old man, and the activity of caring for the old men, and issue of caring for the old men, aiming at showing the social significance of “caring for the old man is to love ourselves” and the Chinese national traditional virtues of 'respecting and caring for the elderly'. We hope to let more people know about the current situation of local old men and existing problems in community nursing homes in Honggu District, and make people go into action through the activity. Through our practical actions and reasonable suggestions, the activity of caring for the old men develops better for a long term and in a wide range, at the same time, and effectively contribute to social stability and economic development. Caring for the elderly is a job that the whole society should be concerned and do well. Elderly people worked hard and brought us up. Now they are old, they can not look after themselves, and need our help. It is important for us to resolve the old-age security problems. It needs us to study and explore that how to better care for the elderly and give them a happy life in their later years. People discussed and researched on the Internet, for example, telling a thing in life, analyzing the old man’s difficulties in real life, and gave their suggestion on caring for the old men. The research aims to make people know about the life of the old men around us, their difficulties in life, especially the old men in countryside, and let us to pay attention to these issues and try to solve the problem and let each old man have a happy twilight years.

In our school, there was a computer room with one server (windows2003 system), a teacher’s computer (windows XP system), and 50 client (windows XP system). 4 million fiber broadband accessed to six offices and three principal’s offices. However, broadband does not access to the computer room. And the configuration is low, and operation speed is slow. Due to lack of school funding, many people are online during the day, the speed is very slow. So, we have to surf on the Internet at the school on the weekends. School stipulates that students are not allowed to access to the Internet, some students do not have computer at home, and can not do anything. In the information technology class, our teacher guided us to make web page.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

It’s the first time for us to participate in the web page design competition. We did not have any experience. But under the teacher's introduction and guidance, we gradually got into the role, and signed up for the web page design competition. The web page design competition has a high requirement for writing. At that time, it approached the mid-tern exam, the learning task was heavy. Ordinarily we did not have time to write, only at weekend. Sometimes, we took school time to develop the activity. In interview, we also had a lot of difficulties, for example, in an interview in welfare and rescue center, because we were nervous, we forgot the question in our first interview of the director of welfare and rescue center, we could not recorded all of their words as they spoke fast, some old men were hard of hearing, and some old men could not understand what we said. Because the welfare and rescue center is far from our school, it took our fifty minutes to go there. Some students complained, which influenced our morale. Time is short and task is heavy. When we received the information of taking part in the web page design competition, it is in the middle of October. We began to build team, and analyzed the local characteristics and resources, and the difficulties. At last, compared with past works of competition, we discussed and decided our research theme—caring for the old man is to love ourselves.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Looking back on the webpage design competition, we experienced a lot. At beginning, we were at a loss. We registered on the Internet with an exciting heart. It is our first time to use digital camera, so we were carefully. Communication with Qianxiang Wancai Company on line made us excited. We did not know how to build a website and make web page at first. During the first interview, we were nervous. In the activity, we felt happy. It made us know about the life of empty-nesters. We all learned a lot in the activity. We previously participated in similar games, but this time it has the most profound influence on me. Although there are a lot of difficulties, but we will be hard to overcome, and show our best works.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

1.In the course of information technology, we made full use of the learned knowledge and make web pages on the computers, which consolidated and developed our knowledge. 2.The second classroom, we learned some basic knowledge of web page making and image processing technology. And, it strengthened our understanding about computer and network, and exercised our ability. 3.It brought the DigChina into school and our work of 'caring for the old man is to love ourselves' was selected into textbooks, and was brought into students’ second classroom as the main position of educating and leading school and community to care for the old men. 4.Through the school network platform, our works of 'caring for the old man is to love ourselves' is known by more students. It inspired students' interest in study and developed students' language knowledge. We had the education of caring for the old men through reading on class and reading out of class, study in classwide meeting and ideological and moral lessons. It improved our ability in reading and writing, communication ability, aesthetic ability and so on. And it enriched our campus culture.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We thought that to care empty nest older is to care our own. And it is our privilege to care empty nest older. First, we made a plan about interview and determined the research subject, then conducted interviews and sorted out, analyzed, and researched the material, at last, wrote the report. I hope to further strengthen people’s understanding about empty-nesters and draw people’s attention to the empty-nesters through the activity. We made it into web pages and put it on the website to make more people know about empty-nesters and make empty-nesters be cared, and feel the warmth of family more. In the research process, we understood the empty nester is so lonely. The whole society should care for them. Through this research, we hope to make more people know about empty nesters and let more empty nesters feel the warmth from socially.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Through this research, we were more aware of the live and world of the aged. We mobilized more students to get involved in the community to care for the elderly, usually living to help them, talk to them. We had the confidence to have a useful site with good content, and let more people know about empty-nesters.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

The website themed with 'caring for the old man is to love ourselves' is made successfully with the help of many people, such as the support from our school leaders, teachers, and classmates, the warm reception and thoughtful arrangement of faculty of Social Welfare and Rescue Center of Honggu District, and help from staff of Xinyuan Natural-gas Co., LTD. With the help of many people, we avoided detours and mistakes, and won a lot of precious time for us.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

With the development of the research, we knew more about empty nesters. In communication with them, we felt the old man was very lonely, and they needed to the care from family and the warmth of family. It made us learn that in a limited time, bring the family members unlimited warm.
