Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Our school is located in Changhua County. The school is near Zhuoshuixi river. Due to the fertile soil, left by the river, there is a huge diversity of plants, which continue to evolve and adapt to changing conditions. Farmers plant about thirty kinds of crops on this land, such as rice, peanuts, cabbage, and melon and fruit. This ten yaers, famers have begun to plant podocarpus macrophyllus and wheat for its economic benefits.

2. Summary of Our Project

The purpose of this project is to research the diversity of local crops through various interviews and field study. By so doing, we not only understand the status of the diversity of local crops, but also learn more about the farmers’ effort and their devotion to the land.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:1

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dial-up modem

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:4-6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

In the period of time, we needed to use spare time to accomplish the project—from setting up the topic, collecting data, communicating with the villagers, visiting and interviewing with farmers, to writing up contents, as well as webpage design and production. It is actually a heavy task. Besides, students and teachers had to take care of school lessons and examinations. Students must temporarily stop doing their research when they had tests. However, they did not give up or complained about the limitation of the time. On the contrary, students paid more effort to do the research during the limited time.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Students and teachers know more about the community and the world by participating in International Schools CyberFair.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

In the class of social study, my students learn the topic of the culture of Taiwan. It is really an interesting topic for students because they all want to know more about their hometown. After discussing a lot of times, we decide to take part in the project of crop diversity in Tainchien. During this period of time, students have learned to get information about crops in Tanchian. Moreover, they have interviews with the villagers and farmers in order to know how they plant crops. At the end of the semaster, students have to make power points and introduce the plants to each other. The project of crop diversity in Tanchian not only is connected to the social study, but also becomes a way for students to know, and even love the place they live.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

We use Internet to get information about crops. When doing field study and having interviews, we use digital camera to take pictures of the crops, the farmers and experts. Moreover, we use Microsoft to make power points in order to show the results of our project.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

In order to complete our project, students try to interview, send e-mail to interviewees. During our interview, students not only know more about our community but also let these interviewees know more about their plan. In school, students discuss the content of the project with other students and also introduce their project to other classmates.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

The more I get involved in the project, the more interest and curiosity I have. I learned a lot from each field study. At the beginning, I never tried to know how the crops grow up. During the process of field study and interview, I found that Tanchian Village is stunningly beautiful. I feel touched for such beautiful scenery. When setting up the webpage, I had to collect data and pictures. Seeing these pictures, I found the crop diversity in Tanchian. It was my first time to shell the peanuts apart, to cultivate and to harvest cabbage. I felt really excited. I absorb knowledge about the agriculture during this perod of doing this project. I felt that it was more interesting to go out of the door to observe the natural environment than to sit on the chair to play “Fun Farm.” I appreciate teachers to offer me this opportunity to know more about this community.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We interviewed the villagers, farmers, and the village head in order to choose a topic which could introduce Tanchian, a rural area, to the world. After discussing a lot of times, we made our decision to focus on the diversity of local crops. In the process, the village head, farmers, and villagers help us to carry on the project. For example, farmers led us to their lands to introduce their plants, the village head talked about the history of Tanchian, and the villagers took us to their homes in order to introduce the special product of the area. Thanks to their support, we finished the project.
