Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Our county is located at the southern edge of Inner Mongolian Plateau as well as in the northwest of Hebei Province. It is a national-level poverty-stricken county with a population of 194,300, of which 148,300 are engaged in agriculture while 155,400 are permanent residents. In recent years, the number of migrant rural labor went out to work, many village in my county become into 'migrant village'. More than 3.8 people go out to work in county each year. While they are devoting themselves entirely for our city, family income is also increasing. But behind this phenomenon, a large group -- Empty Nester is derived. At present, the county for population of more than 60 years of age in rural is 25100, including 1534 five guarantees, the population of Empty Nester is 15200, whose children are working outside and have no time to take care of them.

2. Summary of Our Project

As the aging of population is deepening in China and the number of migrant workers are growing every single year, the aged from rural empty nest families become more and more. They should taste the good life with their children in a ripe old age, but nowadays, they have to work the fields and they feel lonely with no children around them. So, we decided to care about those strange and familiar grandpa and grandma over us. Do everything in our modest to help them, to show love to poor lonely old people, let them lead a comfortable life.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

A? Lack of computer knowledge and Webpage production technology. Our foundation is almost zero, the software we can use is pitiful, teacher Bi is not only our teacher but also our computer teacher, he was very patient to teach us, we were making while learning. B, a network problem: the school's computer configuration is low, a few computers can access to the Internet, and speed is also very slow. C, time: in order not to affect the normal learning, we can only squeeze time, make full use of the weekend time to go homes of elderly for interview, questionnaire survey and making Webpage. D, Encountered problems in interview, questionnaire survey: Sha Bu Yao village is a little far from our school, where we can only ride to interview with two teachers; because most grandma and grandpa can't read, so we were reading questionnaire for them while filling in the questionnaire. However, we were not afraid of hardship and had patience, the task was finished successfully finally.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

The project was supported by the school league and politics, especially the empty nest grandparents in Sha Bu Yao village give us a lot of help, the monographic study can be carried out smoothly. In two months, although we experienced a lot, met a lot of difficulties, we were more happy! And we have done our best for the grandparents. In the activity, we not only learned photography, photo processing technology, but also learned a lot of knowledge, Webpage computer design and manufacture technology, interview skills, also let us learn to be strong and brave, to strengthen our social practice ability and teamwork ability.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Our school puts the content of helping the elderly in the moral curriculum in primary school education, educating students do from themselves, from the little things around, be good children to respect for the elderly.

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Hardware: Computer, digital camera, scanner, SD, Card Reader, Sofeware: Photoshop,Microsoft Word ,Internet Explorer,ACDSee,Ftp Netware: CISS, Email, BBS,ADSL

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We five pupils are not only the advocators of this activity and participants, but also propagators of loving the elderly. We are very sad when we saw old vicissitudes of the face around us, so we decided to put the topic of 'Empty Nester' as the theme of the research. In the topic research process, we make full use of time on Sunday, carried out several interviews, surveys, and raised money to buy gifts. At the same time, we also helped grandparents washing cloth, head, cooking, cleaning the room and courtyard, irrigating. We went to every family in every place, vigorously promoted the Chinese virtue of loving elderly. Calling on the whole society to care for this group, and creating a good support environment for the rural elderly.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

In order to affect the people, the teachers and students in our school carry out various forms of 'respecting the old love' activities. Through the activities, school teachers and students have a more profound traditional Chinese virtues education of respecting the old. With the effect of our school, three primary schools in the county and the second middle school have organized the students to go to help the elderly, trying to do everything in their power, send warmth for the elderly. At the same time, there are a lot of students help the old people playing a furnace tank, cleaning, cleaning up litter in their spare time. The villagers in Sha Bu Yao are more harmony through this activity, the neighborhoods help each other, formed an atmosphere of respecting for the elderly. Rural Health Organization in village organized 13 doctors to make free physical examination for the elderly in 'mutual happiness court'. As long as everyone contributes a little love, 'empty nest' for the elderly will not 'empty nest', the sun will be red.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

This research has gained support from the school of the Communist Youth League and the politics. Especially grandparents in Sha Bu Yao village, they took the initiative to accept our interview, and provided us with their own information in detail, which makes the questionnaire completed successfully. And the commit in Sha Bu Yao village and relevant responsible person in mutual happiness Institute, they provided convenient conditions many times in this activity.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

The complex Webpage production is a bit difficult for our students. However, with the help of two teachers, we took a keen interest in learning, began a bold 'creation' journey. 'Hard work pays off,' nearly two months of efforts were not in vain, we succeeded at last. Although Webpage is unsatisfactory, but we still feel 'Every cloud has a silver lining.' By participating in this event, we have excised in interpersonal communication, learning something that can not get in the classroom. In the entire process of interview, searching for information on the Internet, Webpage production, we also feel the importance of teamwork. This is a rare opportunity, we all cherish. In addition, the theme is promoting the formation of respecting and loving atmosphere; at the same time, it also affects many people, has led many people to participate in activities of respecting for the elderly.
