Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

The origin of glove puppet theater can be traced back to the temple celebration in the earlier Taiwan society. Due to the June-Shong Huang’s leading and efforts, the glove puppet theater can run a show on TV, which transformed a tradition art form into a popular and modern one. We live in the most economically prosperous city in Taipei area. It means that we are take on the responsibility to pass the tradition of folk art of Glove puppet theater. Thus, the place we had field research and interview is Puppetry Art Centre of Taipei, which housed a glove puppet collection of puppets and staging props from various areas. Of course, it included, glove puppet, the art form we like to introduce. In Puppetry Art Centre of Taipei, we learned a lot of related knowledge of puppet. Taipei is the hub of the cultural events, including Min-Nan, Hakak, Mainland culture. At the same time, Taipei indeed is the nurturing place of culture and arts. For this reason, it plays a vital role in the propaganda of traditional culture.

2. Summary of Our Project

Traditional glove puppet is gradually replaced by Pi-Li glove puppet. Glove puppet is thrown into oblivion by society with speedy development of civilization. We, a group of vocational high school students picked this topic for this reason to make glove puppet know to more people for its sustainable existence for generation and generation. In the part of back ground music, we used to add special effect and Vinyl Disc; however, in the modern day we are now, we use DVD to accomplish this part. For example: The post-production music dubbing in Taipei is played by an orchestration behind the curtain and dub align with the drama played on the stage. With historically richness and the traditional culture of glove puppet, we hope that we can make a web site based on this research project to promote the culture of glove puppet and have deeper exploration of it with our excellence in website making. In this way , this beautiful culture of glove puppet can be passed on from generation to generation.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

Internet Environment at school: 10m Optical Internet, Wifi Internet Environment at home: ADSL And we use the network and 3C equipments to connect and edit the whole project website all the time. Back to home,we still use the net to connect the team members to finish this project.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

We are faced with plenty of problems while doing research project. Though we have been through a lot, we can’t improve and grow without setbacks. We should have team work and help each other. From the start, we collect and code the information as well ass discuss the topic and the structure of the website. For the need of the content of the information, we should pore the theme, have the filed trip and conduct and interview. Before set out for the trip, all preparation should be done in advance, including the confirmation of time, place, pining down the question for interview etc… Next come the filming, recording, coding date and refining the final touch of the website. Each step requires our full attention and patience to finish the whole project. The most important of all is the solidarity of each member. We should spare no efforts to accomplish this research project. Through it, we learn a lot of knowledge that we can not acquire from the textbook. It is a scarce and worthy experience from which we benefit hugely. It is the most juicy fruit that we harvest hand in hand.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

One of our members, Wei-Chun, manipulates the glove puppet. After this extraordinary experience, he found manipulating the puppet is not that easy as he presumed, which makes us bestowed our respect toward the performer of glove puppet more. As time passing by, the traditional culture of glove puppet gradually withering away. Nowadays, we can find the trace of this art form in certain occasion. We hope we can make glove puppet known to more people through this project and have it last forever.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

We learned the skill of web site design, animation design and photo refinement at school. With the advent of this research project, we can combine the skill and cours we learned at school and actual practice closely. Glove puppet not only for appreciation, but should be preserved historically. The issue of maintaining the traditional art has been discussed in public for such a long tims. However, it is rarely practiced. In this research project, we are calling for the importance of passing on to the next generation. This art form with historical value deserve more respect and conservation and be passed on and on from generation to generation. We hope we can make some contributions to society through the research project of the web site.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We went to the Puppet Art Centre of Taipei and worked with the volunteers. Through that, we learned about the details of the exhibition and functions they held. During the visit, we learned about the history of the Taiwanese glove puppetry, collected data, photographed the materials and tools that made the glove puppets. We’ve also documented and photographed the instruments that were used to create background music for the puppetry. With the centre’s help, we’ve also interviewed National Heritage Award winner Chen Shi Huang. In an old building with antique flavor on Yanping North road, we got to have a very informative chat with teacher Chen. He told us the stories of how he learned glove puppetry, and all the efforts he had done not only domestically, but also internationally for the conservation of glove puppetry. Through this project, we now have a better understanding of the history and heritage of glove puppetry. Hopefully, through this competition, we can introduce the importance of glove puppetry to more people.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

In this project, we realized that team work is extremely important. We would not be able to achieve anything without everyone’s involvement and dedication. In the process, we had our share of arguments and disagreements. Some sacrificed more than others. But that should not be something we fight about. We should just keep our head down and do our share of work. Team work is very difficult. We need to learn how to resolve our problems and not blame it on each other. When we can resolve the issues one by one and reach a consensus, we can not only accelerate the process, but also learn how to work with others and learn to trust each other. The Teacher’s Demonstration of Glove Puppetry. During the interview, teacher Chen demonstrated basic maneuver of a glove puppet. It felt like he has bestowed the puppet a soul. Each puppet had a different character and qualities, which made us realize the amount of hard work Teacher Chen had put into. We learned that after countless practice and pure stubbornness for greatness, teacher Chen has mastered the art of glove puppetry. We were all in awe. One thing worth noticed is that the puppet teacher Chen used was designed specifically for demonstration. It was made with transparent yarn so that we can see clearly how to manipulate the puppets with fingers. It was really an eye-opening experience.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

The teacher’s Aspiration Through this interview, we learned teacher Chen’s love for glove puppetry, and his consistent hard work to find a way for glove puppetry to not only have a place in history, but also shine in this digital age. His passion really moved us. We hoped that this project will bring more attention to glove puppetry, so that it can continue to thrive.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

In the past, we did not really pay attention to the importance of traditions and culture. However, through this project, we’ve learned to appreciate the importance of tradition, culture, and arts, and how they are the vey fiber of our nation. To preserve a cultural treasure is not easy. With time and technology, different art forms of cultural importance are gradually forgotten. Through this project, we walked right into glove puppetry’s history. It was very emotional for us. And because of this project, we’ve had a better understanding of the importance of traditional art forms. Hopefully through this project, we can bring more attention to glove puppetry.
