Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Our Indian Community comprises a variety of traditions, cultures and art forms. All these add grace and glitter to the Indian Heritage. We have chosen a segment of our local community that includes specifically Indian Classical Dances.

2. Summary of Our Project

Our Cyber Fair project INDIAN CLASSICAL DANCES is about the eight classical dances of our country India. Through our project, we are showcasing our traditional classical dance forms. We believe that the Indian Classical Dances have the power to express feelings, expressions and emotions through various hand and feet movements. They are also a beautiful medium of narrating stories where several Classical Dances' names literally mean 'Story-Play'. Our motto of choosing this project is to create awareness among people about the importance of our local tradition. People generally prefer modern dance forms like hip hop and jazz because of which classical dances are losing their charm. This project is our small attempt at regenerating the lost charm of Indian Classical Dances.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:2-3

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dial-up modem

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:4-6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

We could not get to work daily on internet enabled computers which further delayed our project. The main reason behind all this was that only two proper functioning computers had internet and many times other school teachers were working on it for various purposes because of which all our internet related work delayed for several weeks. We could not work much at home as well.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

There were a number of problems that our team had to overcome. The first and the foremost problem problem was understanding among the group members. It took us time for all of us to coordinate with each other and communicate fully. There were several issues with the team members and we did waste a lot of time in resolving them. The next problem was the inadequate access to computers and internet. We had limited computers in the computer lab that were available to us. Very often the computers weren't free as the teachers of the school had to work. Also internet was not available all the time which further delayed our project. We also had to face problems with choosing the proper web site on which we would like to make our website. There were very few free websites that gave us the desired features for our project.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Cyber Fair has given the students and the school a wonderful opportunity to participate in an international competition. Most of all, it has given the experience of working and participating at the global level.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Our project addresses high content standards with complete and brief information about the entire project. The pictures used and displayed are completely adequate and precise. The project fits well into the school and state guidelines as we are promoting the Classical Dances Of India by following all the rules and regulations of school. We learnt various new skills like website designing, new ways of project promotion and also HTML coding. The main group concepts practiced by us were leadership and ways of adjusting with the team members. Yes, using Internet has been a more effective method than traditional methods as it gave a variety of options to explore and discover about whatever aspect we want to.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

There were a number of tools and technologies that we used for completing our project. Firstly, we used the computers available in our school. There are approx. 20 computers in our school out of which one computer was given to us to save all our documents and project related work. Except for that, we were allowed to work on 3 to 4 computers at a time in the school. Our team members also used mobile phones to communicate to each other. We also made a Facebook group chat named ‘CYBER FAIR’ in which we could send messages that were required for everyone to read. All important information regarding how the project has to go about were put as a message within the group so that everyone gets information on time as Facebook is a social networking site that is used mostly by everyone regularly. Then we used Digital Cameras and Video Cameras for taking the required pictures of team members and videos of all events related to the project. These tools helped us so much as we were solely dependent on them for beginning and ending the project.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We acted as ambassadors and spokespersons for our Cyber Fair project online by creating our website and the project related page on social networking sites and reaching out to the people online by creating posts and further awareness among them all about Indian Classical Dances. We acted as ambassadors and spokespersons in person by presenting our project through several presentations in our school, creating and conducting surveys within different age groups and getting into group discussions with students and teachers of our school about out chosen Cyber Fair topic and theme.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

The project has already started to impact our Indian Community where our small attempt to regenerate the lost charm of the Indian Classical Dances had proved to be a successful one. Already the youngsters and adults have started to show interest in the Classical Dances and we received positive reviews on the project. Our project has also been a source of idea to start Indian Classical Dances performances and workshops in our own school, on which the school authorities are already working on.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Our project is about a local culture so it definitely involves active participation of different age groups as helpers who guided us with new ideas and volunteers who volunteered to review our project. Also we conducted short surveys of varied age groups who gave us their opinions on our project. They were a great help to us well.
