Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

The neighborhood is full of hills, valleys and winding roads. Also, there are few flat farmland. People here can only rely on farming. It’s hard to get water so residents here have to dig pond in order to accumulate some rainwater. Therefore, farms here face a lot of difficulties when they want to develop their careers. Take rice for example, there is only one harvest a year. However, recently, due to the setting of the machinery industry, it effectively improves the life standards in the neighborhood. Communities are along Highway 19-A and all the way from north to south. They are called “Tatu Island”, “Bajia Laos” and “Grass Pi”(subdivided into “Top Grass Pi” under the Grass Pi). In addition, there is a northern settlement called “Ma Thick” which is in the north of the Shen Keng River, but Highway 19-A doesn’t go past there. However, there are some other ways which we can go to the community. Furthermore, in front of the Cing Shuei Temple, there is a road called Chang Wun Road which leads to western “Wanchai settlement” and to the southern “Bu Dai Wei.” These six settlements form the community. People develop various characteristics in the community.

2. Summary of Our Project

Nan Yi Golf & Country Club is a world-class 18-hole golf course, commissioned by a Japanese designer Watanabe hirosi. The course is well-thought-out that can be proclaimed one of the best golf course in southern Taiwan. Nan Yi’s core idea is to plan the land become a multi-purpose place, provide club members or guests to race, release pressure, have fun , and make new friends. It can also let the guests have a wonderful space to challenge themselves. This web page is to introduce Nan Yi Golf & Country Club, let us not only explore the charm of golf, but also recognize a recreational and high level place. We hope this study can promote the prosperity and development of the region.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:21-50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:2-3

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:4-6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

Starting from grade 3, the students are exposed to basic computer-related courses, at least once a week. Besides, computer generated visual aids will also be used in daily courses as well. With the network bandwidth of 100MB, it is more than sufficient in normal usage. This time we put a lot of efforts in participating the Cyber-fair; using the voice recorder and digital camera to record the event as well as searching for information related to Golf & Country Club on internet before hand]. The information collected are will be processed and transformed into electronic files and further developed into a participatory website. We then share the results with classmates and teachers by using LCD projectors and computers. We are looking forward to come out with a complete and detailed report on “Nan Yi Golf & Country Club” and further driven the positive development of the local community.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Since this is the first time we participate in this Cyber-fair, everyone has no prior experience in such competition. As everyone lacks experience in competitions such as these, everyone was struggling around in the darkness.Fortunately, the school teachers showed exceptionally good teamwork in assisting and leading students to conduct interviews, produce publications and create web pages. Some even sacrifice their leisure time to translate documents into English. Hopefully all the hard work has paid off. Before choosing Nan Yi Golf and Country Club to be our topic, we met with a variety of difficulties. As almost everyone had limited knowledge about golf, we had to think of appropriate questions in advance before entering. Moreover, as it is private property, we had to call in to gain permission prior to entering. Fortunately, both the community and the club helped us a lot. Throughout the process of interviewing, not only did we gain new knowledge, but we also enjoyed the process of learning. We believe that we are unable to overcome difficulties and successfully present our report to everyone worldwide.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

As the saying goes, “The journey is more important than the destination”. Through this Cyberfair contest, we hope that the students and the community will be able to learn more about Nan Yi Golf & Country Club and create opportunities to interact with one another. In addition, the school will be able to find a long-term collaborative partner, which is beneficial to the development of the school management and teaching. Maybe in the future, a sports star like Tiger Woods will be cultivated amongst the students.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards? Our local government emphasizes the importance of the English language and aspires for it to become the second official language within a decade. To accomplish this goal, the strengthening and enhancement of English education is in full swing. Besides that, the local government are hoping that schools can develop international education by expanding students’ horizons, so that students will have the courage to face the future challenges. Hence, we chose Nan Yi Golf & Country Club as the title of the Cyberfair competition. I hope that through “golf” this international sport, not only will students’ command of the English language be enhanced, but it can also serve as a platform of interaction with international students, as well as experience the students’ passion towards golf. It is saddening that this new learning experience is currently absent in Taiwan’s present curriculum’s syllabus. Through self-learning online via the Internet, not only will we understand the various knowledge about golf, but also develop a certain interest in the game of golf. I believe that this experience will be favourable and beneficial for their growth in the future.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project? 1.Usage of digital voice recorders and digital cameras to record the images and interviews, so that these materials can be used for the web page. 2. Using the telephone to make interview appointments as well as personally visiting Nan Yi course are necessary steps, because through interviews, we will be able to gain deeper insight on the subject matter, exposing news that are unknown by the public in order to make our webpage more interesting. 3. All the relevant and necessary equipment are provided by the school, but if the facilities (e.g digital cameras, etc) are inadequate, the teachers themselves will offer their personal devices to assist us! The most valuable device is the digital camera as not only can it capture a beautiful view of the golf course, but it can also be used to record the interviews in both dynamic and static image modes. These records can be used as our first-hand reports and thus, digital cameras are recognized as the ideal and most effective “personal assistants”. 4. Most of the participants have not participated in competitions before, hence it is not easy for them to come out with their own interview questions and to participate in live interviews. However, the enthusiasm and initiative of the students enabled the interviews to be conducted successfully and a strong relationship with Nan Yi Golf & Country Club was built. Interview experience such as this is very valuable and meaningful, as the general school curriculum is lacking of such learning processes. I believe that this experience will accompany them for a lifetime.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person. Before visiting Nan Yi, student representatives had to contact the official Nan Ti representatives at least three days in advance via the Internet. Besides that, they also had to explain the interview questions and schedules clearly to them, so that Nan Yi can cooperate with them. Besides taking the student representatives for a tour around the golf course, they also took the effort to explain in detail the golf course’s operations, which is something that will not occur in foreign countries. They even brought students to savor delicious foods, which made the students to feel surprised and welcomed. Hence, student representatives are more interested to ask their family members about their unforgettable experiences about the golf course. They might even cycle to Nan Yi during their holidays, just to observe what is happening in the golf course. Of course, the community is optimistic towards such a good interaction between the schools and the country club. They are also eager to be the go-betweens for both parties to contact one another. Many parents in Taiwan perceive golf to be a highly regarded and distinguished sport, hence if schools are able to provide opportunities for students to widen their horizons, the parents will be highly supportive and agreeable towards the schools’ efforts and devotion.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community? Actually, Nan Yi Golf & Country Club has existed for decades, however only a few residents of the community are familiar with it. Most residents do not know about the golf course and even feel curious about it. The people who visits Nan Yi rarely stop by or stay with the community. Hence, the customers and community members can be described as two train tracks that seldom intersect. We hope that this website will make people to be more aware about Nan Yi Golf & Country Club, and also provide information to the audiences about the necessary preparations that need to be made in case they have an opportunity to work there. We also believe that the content of the web page will also attract people outside of the local community to be more interested in the country club and might even visit it in the future. One day, when the country club expands its operations, it will be able to give back to the local community by providing more job opportunities and resources, hence increasing the community’s prosperity.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

The person we are most thankful for is Mr. Chen Long-mu. Thanks to him, the school was able to get in touch with Cai Chun-shan, the vice general manager of Nan Yi Golf and Country Club. Additionally, we are grateful towards the students’ family members who are currently working in the country club, as they provided a lot of valuable feedback and information that enable the students to have better insight and more information to write about Nan Yi Golf & Country Club. Furthermore, there are schools that offered their experiences in the Cyberfair Competition as a reference for the students, which also helped Wen He elementary school to successfully take part in this year’s Cyberfair Competition.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional) Initially, when we were creating the web page, we just wanted to understand more about the golf course which owned a large piece of land in the community. However, after knowing more about the golf course, the students became more curious and eager to explore further. They eventually realized that managing a golf course is not an easy task. The company has to spend a lot of money and effort to gain their customers’ approval, the community’s support as well as the government’s legal permission. This impressed the students deeply and made them realize the importance of hard work and commitment, as Nan Yi Golf & Country Club spent over 20 years of dedication to become successful today. Hence, this experience reminds us that if we want to succeed in the future, we need to rely on ourselves to fulfill and achieve our dreams, just as what Nan Yi has done.
