Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Immaculate Heart Center for Mentally Handicapped is located on Lucau Road, Lugang Town, Changhua County. Lugang is in the central part of Taiwan and it was once very prosperous because many foreign businessmen came here to do business by boat long time ago. Most inhabitants’ religion is either Buddhism or Taoism. Immaculate Heart Center for Mentally Handicapped is an institution which belongs to Catholic Taichung Diocese. It is about three kilometers away from my school.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

1). Schedule:We are music class students, and we have to spend a lot of time practicing playing the instruments and learning musical knowledge and skills. We have to discuss and make plans in advance, and type the interview materials during the summer vacation. 2) Technology: In the beginning, some team members were not familiar with web production such as webpage folder, webpage text formats, filename, and image processing. 3) Experience: We were inexperienced in interviewing people, so we discussed the interview content, goal, work, and precautions before the interview. 4)Language: We are not native speakers. Our English writing abilities are not good enough to express what we thought exactly. But we still try our best to finish the translation by ourselves.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

In fact, we are the biggest gainers because we learn a lot during this period. We have much more than expected. We have an influence on the students in my school. Our campus atmosphere are better than before because we are the seeds of love, and we are sprouting and getting stronger on our campus.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

The purpose of the project “The Glory Of Love” is to introduce Immaculate Heart Center for Mentally Handicapped to the people and the society through the process of research and interview. While the students explored the information about the research, we were involved in the surrounding environment, and learned the background and development of the charity institution. During the study, we learned to work with others and to actively solve problems. These are in accordance with the education philosophy of Grade 1-9 Curriculum.

Through interviews and translation, our oral ability and writing ability are improved. While writing website text, feedbacks, and reports, we check the diction, grammar, and syntax. This matches Language domain. We helped to feed the students at Immaculate Heart Center for Mentally Handicapped and helped the cooks prepare meals. We also learned how to make pickled vegetables. By selling pickled vegetables and ox-tongue cake, we learned the art of talking. This matches Art and Humanity & Integrative Domain. Sister You is from Korea. After learning that her hometown is a strange country to us, we asked her a lot of questions about Korea. We are curious why a young Korean girl would leave her dear family for an island far away. We were also surprised at the power of religion. Sister You came here because of God’s will. We had better understanding about Catholic church. This matches Social Study domain. We also learned how to build a website. This matches Science and Life Technology.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

For this Cyber Fair project, in addition to our teamwork spirit and great efforts, we also visited a number of the staff at Immaculate Heart Center for Mentally Handicapped, such as Sister You chengsoon, teachers, social workers, therapists, cooks, alternative service soldiers, charity children , and volunteers. We told them our goals to improve the campus atmosphere and promote students' virtue and stop bullying. We call parents and students in our school to donate secondhand goods and do volunteer service to let more people know about the charity. It conveys our intention of improving the atmosphere around us. We hope that we can have responses from more people.

We participated in one-day volunteer experience in order to experience what the charity intends to convey to the public, and have further contact with the Catholic institution and its participants.

We held various activities related to the concept of helping others through our club, including “jumble sale”, “volunteer service”, and “the flea market”. We hope that the change of our school culture can start from us.

They all did their best to support us, so that we learned a lot. We would like to thank them all for agreeing to the interview, recognizing our efforts in the research of this topic, and giving us lots of encouragement and support. When visiting Sister You chengsoon, she sincerely shared her feelings and thoughts with us. We were touched by her spirits and enthusiasm. Teacher Li jyunsheng was the receptionist. He always patiently answered our questions, and led us to have experience in taking care of disabled people. His patience allowed us to learn quickly and gave us a sense of achievement. Thanks to his teaching, we learned a lot and showed more thought for others than ourselves.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

(1) About Love and Care Some of us never realize our own happiness lies within ourselves. Most people are so busy driven to pursue success, power and wealth that they mistake these materialistic values for happiness. Getting along with teachers, and volunteers at Immaculate Heart Center for Mentally Handicapped, I found out they were somebodies. They were so brave that they chose the ways which were different from others did. They were not alone because their hearts were full of joy and peace. (2) Our information literacy The Cyber Fair project is presented in the form of webpages, which requires the use of a lot of information technology. For being able to use the information devices fluently, we learned many software and hardware tools to enrich our computer knowledge, so that we could skillfully use computer products. (3) The joy of sharing The most beautiful scenery in Taiwan is friendly people. Through the Cyber Fair project, we share our experience with others and present the beauty of human nature to the world via the Internet. We believe that the people who live in this land will see another beauty of Taiwan through our Cyber Fair project and the whole world will learn more about Taiwan through our webpages.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

In order to improve the campus atmosphere and promote students’ virtue, we gathered together to compete in the International Cyberfair. We suggested the dean of our student affair office to hold several activities, like jumble sale, volunteer service, and the flea market. Students in my school know more about the charity institution by joining these charitable activities. We also know more about the Catholic charity institution by joining its volunteer activities. Then, we spread our thoughts through our actions and motivate people around to join the volunteer activities and pay more attention to the disabled. During the two years, we kept joining volunteering activities at the Center. We also joined the Taiwan Cyberfair last year. Through our report, more and more people noticed the charity. Thank Sister You for helping us have a better understanding of the charity during this period.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

After working hard for months, we’ve learned to process information and produce web pages. We’ve experienced frustrations and hard times, but we continuously encouraged one another. Even though we sacrificed sleep and leisure time, our hard work resulted in a satisfying, completed project. Every student at Immaculate Heart Center for Mentally Handicapped is the most innocent angel in the world. There are many kind people in the world who do something good to the disabled people want nothing in return. Thanks to their help, teachers and Sister You can concentrate on their task. They are joyful because they are not alone.
