Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Shigang District located in the west of Tainan. It is located in the west of Tainan and on the south of Jiali District, east of Qigu District, north of Anding District and Annan District, southwest of Madou District. Shigang is in the northwest of Tainan, beside the Tseng Wen River north bank, with the height of about five meters. Shigang was a port before, but after losing the function of port, it turned to become a trading center of agriculture products for neighborhood. Although Shigang is small, it has a lot of delicious foods and beautiful places. And flax is also the most famous products in Shigang.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Time: 1.Our teammates are in two classes. For this reason, if we want to discuss the program during the lunch break, we need to ask the head teachers for agreement. However, the teacher disagrees with us to discuss at that time. To solve the problem, we must make use of the break time between two lessons and talk the detail of what we discuss in the lunch break to the absent teammates, also give them the task they need to finish. 2. Because the production time contained the whole winter vacation, we could not always discuss the program all together. For this reason, the progress could not be known on time by everyone. To solve the program, we use the Message in Facebook and the free communication app, LINE. Also make a remote meeting with TeamViewer. All those ways can make up for the problems that some teammates can’t discuss the program in person. Technology: To make website was strange for our website maker. For this reason, to make a fantastic website, he had to start from learning the most basic website making. However, we didn’t have a lot of time to learn such a difficult thing, website making. To solve the problem, of course, to borrow books from library was the most important thing. One people didn’t have enough time to learn a lot of things, but we have six teammates and we read the book together! In addition, our writer was the website maker in last year, and she taught the website maker some experience about website making. Because of the guidance, our website becomes more and more perfect.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

This thematic research program was completed in 5 months. In the process of the program, we learned a lot of new things. Maybe we rode bicycles just for playing at first, but now we are looking for a flax farmland, to enjoy the pure flax flowers. Maybe we used computers just for playing games at first, but now we are making our own website. We might have no feelings with Shigang before, but now we love Shigang very much. Because of joining in National Cyberfair, we all see different ourselves.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

What we have learned most is definitely the website-making skills. Because website-making skills are really new to us before the contests. Thanks to the National Cyberfair, we begin to browse other people’s website designs, including learning to decipher program code, and grasping the know-how of website-making . In addition, we also come to realize the importance of close cooperation and the uniqueness of every one in different fields. Therefore, knowing how to make the most of use of these helps us to create maximal power and have it in our command. Although the current education system has been changing, most of the school staffs still evaluate students’ achievements through the written tests. Students who do better in the study get all the praise and attention of teachers and adults. Thus, studying hard is the only thing children force themselves to do. However, because of the National Cyberfair, we have learned many different things, and got inspired from each visit. Every time when we chatted with the shopkeeper, we felt very happy and touched. From their stories of making their business, we also realize that everyone can be distinguished in all walks of life, and that working hard brings success. These are what we have obtained and that cannot be acquired from textbooks. The role that we have played in our school community is being the “ ambassadors of Shigang.” Since we took part in the Taiwan school cyberfair last year, we have already visited all over the shops in Shigang and completed all the interviews. For this reason,we have been no strangers to all of the shopkeepers. They would warmly welcome us during every visit, and which motivate us immensely to keep on going.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Software: Microsoft Word 2003: To edit text data, and typeset. Dreamweaver: To make website. FileZilla: To upload website. Facebook: To contact and discuss with teammates. LINE: To contact and discuss with teammates. Google Drive: To sort data and synchronize. TeamViewer10: To use remote meeting for discussing and teaching. PhotoImpact X3: To make website design chart and process photo. Hardware: Smartphone: To contact teammates, take photos and recording. Computer: To make website, sort data, write article and discuss with teammates. Reference Book: To encounter problem when using software, can consult the books. USB Drive: To save data. Else: Interview: To understand the history and uniqueness of the shops through interviews.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

To write the introduction of the local shops, we get further understanding of these shops through interviews. From the shopkeepers’ oral stories, we get the better and clearer picture of what they have weathered and been through to start their businesses, and their persistence in the produce of their food quality. During every interview, we always schedule the details and draw up the questions to make our interview smoother. In the first interview, everyone was so shy that we did nothing but stand dazzed in front of the shop and later, we had no choice but to play the paper, scissor, stone game to decide who to break the ice. The one who lost always had to nervously rehearse his or her lines in his or her mind several time beforehand until the others got really impatient and urged him or her to face the music. Fortunately, when most people saw us in our school uniforms, they all answered our questions patiently. At the end of the interview, almost all of them encouraged us to go on, and which made us feel cheered and more confident. As time passes, we no longe feel terrified before the interviews, and the scene of our standing dazed and played the paper, scissor, stone game in front of the shop vanishes. Instead, we would walk into the shops confidently. Some of us are in charge of taking pictures and some responsible for recording. Occasionally, we would chat with the shop owners like an old friend does. In the past, we would always feel embarrassed, wearing the school uniforms on holidays. But after the National Cyberfair, every time when we have to do interviews on weekends, wearing school uniforms to do them has become a thing that we are proud of. We are all honored to represent our school when in school uniforms because we know we are doing the task of the promotion of Shigang.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Before joining in National cyberfair, we considered Shigang as nothing but a place we call “hometown”. However, after this thematic research program, we have deeply been in love with Shigang, and decide to letmore people get to know the beauty of Shigang. As a result, in our website, not only can you learn about the highlight spots and special shops in Shigang, but also experience exotic culture unique to Shigang itself. The field survey having been finished, our life went back to its normal track. But every time when we walk on the roads or into the familiar stores, we would, without fail, be recognized, ” Aren’t you guys the students who came to interview last time?” , which will never fail to bring broad smiles to our faces and the heartfelt feel people in Shigang show to strangers neverfail to arouse ,though we sometimes still feel a little uneasy.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

In the process of this contest, we got a lot of helps. Thanks every shopkeepers all helped we finish the interviews, and gave us a lot of support and encouragement, let us from completely unaware of Shigang to know every features in Shigang. Thanks our adviser taught us the skills of making the website, let us from did not know anything to can make our own website. Thanks our teachers help us to amend the articles. Thanks everyone who has helped us, because of you, we can finish the work.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

To collect more information and to find more beauty of Shigang, we joined in several activities held by Shigang District and experienced the beauty of Shigang with the folks. In this process, we heard a lot of people’s praise of Shigang, which made us, Shigang Feature promotion ambassadors, felt in honor. Although Shigang is a small town in the countryside, it hides the beautiful scenery that the cities don’t have. In fact, the process of the matic research program went so smoothly because of the cooperation of each other, the careful teaching of the teacher, and the great strength of the consultant. Because we joined the program once last year, we are very familiar to every details in this contest. The only thing that was not perfect might be that we was not clear and not careful enough on the preparation, which led to starting over when we encountered problems. We also realized that preparation was far more important than encountering the problems then modified it when actually doing it. There were some surprises of course. Before making this thematic research program, we never thought about that we could persevere in finishing the interview of every shops, and then completed the website step by step. In the process, we met a lot of things that we did not contact in the past, and found that the world was so big and found that we were lack of knowledge. Hoping the knowledge we learned this time can help us go through the way to our dreams.
