Title: Classic Retro Meets Modern - The Cheongsam Tailor of 'The Assassin'

Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Taipei Municipal Yongle Elementary School is located on the inside Dadao-Cheng of Danshui front, is an elementary school of old community. In this community, business is very booming and the community is also the terminal market of tea, fabric and groceries in Taipei. Dadao-Cheng has not only all kinds of fabric, but also many outstanding tailors. Master Chen is one of the best cheongsam tailors in Dadao-Cheng. In our study, we investigate how the cheongsam and the customs used in 'The Assassin' made by Master Chen.

2. Summary of Our Project

The cheongsam tailor Zhong-Xin Chen is the boss of “YU-FENG Cheongsam”. He is not only one of the best cheongsam tailors in Taiwan, but also has outstanding contribution to make costumes in the movie 'The Assassin'. In this study, we talk Master Chen over the commencement of sewing cheongsam in his life, the process to sew customs in 'The Assassin', and his original ideas on cheongsam.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Firstly, Lack of prior knowledge: We have experience shortage to the knowledge of cheongsam and tailors in Dihua Street, must continue to ask Master Chen and read lots of reference to understand. Secondly, Time of the study is limited: Because we can only do study 2 hours a week, the time is very urgent.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

'Cheongsam' is one of Chinese traditional costume, and we know it more through the interview of Master Chen. Moreover, we learned good skills come from work hard and continuous improvement.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

With school-based curriculum 'Dadao-Chen' as the theme features in Taipei Municipal Yongle Elementary School, we expect to constitute small Dadao-Chen guiding and explaining volunteer worker's team in the future.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

We use much information technology in different purposes. Using the telephone, fax and cell phone contact each other. Using personal computers and notebook computers surf the Internet to collect information. Using digital cameras and video recorders do a complete record. Using web page software manufactures web page.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

In order to allow all our classmates to understand our study and the cheongsam tailor Master Chen, we condensed the research results of Classic Retro Meets Modern - The Cheongsam Tailor of 'The Assassin' and the project webpage into a power point file and reported and promoted it to our students and teachers during morning breaks. Moreover, we expect to constitute small Dadao-Chen guiding and explaining volunteer worker's team in the future.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Firstly, make Master Chen and cheongsam able to continue to spread to accept through the student to the investigation in local old store.

Secondly, through the establishment web page let everyone know the process of sewing cheongsam by Master Chen, then close and reacquaint traditional Chinese cloth style of cheongsam.

Thirdly, through the sharing of customs in 'The Assassin', we are developing student’s creativity to combine old and new, and not only work hard, but also continuous improvement of ourselves to get better.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Firstly, thankful boss of “YU-FENG Cheongsam”, Zhong-Xin Chen. He accepted our interviews and help us to investigate.

Secondly, thankful Teacher Hsu teach us to sew bags.
