2. Summary of Our Project

Chinese calligraphy is a traditional culture that has been passed down for years. The earliest history of Chinese calligraphy could be traced back to 3,000 years ago during the Shang Dynasty. As time pass, and dynasty alters, in order to promote education and optimize language and communication, many emperors had constantly modified the styles of calligraphy, deriving various forms of lettering. According to the Analect of Confucius, “to do a good job, one must first sharpen one's tools.” In order to produce a perfect artwork, the calligraphy brushes and inks are extremely crucial. Particular materials of wools and handles can produce exceptional textures of feelings; Different vapour of lignums can create unique tone colors of inks; Papers made up with specific type of pulp can construct extraordinary effects to artworks. As technology advances nowadays, the manufacture of calligraphy brushes and inks have also improved overtime. Although brushes and inks are indispensable in writing Chinese calligraphy, after all, the tools are lifeless. In order to produce exquisite art pieces, having a professional calligrapher is essential. In the numerous amount of Chinese calligraphers, male calligraphers occupy the majority of the population. However, there are also several female Chinese calligraphers who has created some of the most prominent Chinese calligraphy art pieces, and she is, Song Lian Chang.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

While preparing for the cyberfair, we have encountered several obstacles, including issues like time management and disagreements between group members. At the very beginning, we have distributed jobs for each group members and our schedule. However, as we progress, several problems have become more apparent. Some tasks require multiple group members to work together, yet, our group members are in different classes, meaning that the time we spend together were extremely few. Therefore, in order to fix that issue, we decided to make a plan on a day all group members are all free, and use video call to discuss. As a result of everyone’s cooperation, we quickly have catched up the progress. Although some disagreements have occurred, nevertheless, via several times of rational discussion, we fortunately have came up with a suitable plan. Throughout the entire progress, even though we have encountered a lot of obstacles and difficulties, we have all overcame them. Finally, once we have completed our entire website, we feel absolute relieved and satisfied.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

After researching, we’ve learned lots of knowledge about Chinese Calligraphy. During the interview, we were really honored to have the chance to appreciate prominent artworks of Chinese Calligrapher, Song Lian Chang. Although we have encountered a lot of difficulties, however, we have really learned a lot from the entire procedure. For instance, we had some disagreements between group members, yet, via rational and effective communication and cooperations, all problems and challenges had been resolved. Furthermore, we have also received a lot of help and suggestions from our instructor, teachers, and students that have participated in the Cyberfair competition in previous years. Without them, we would not able to complete this website. This entire project and competition really mean a lot to us, and we have also learnt a lot as we progress. Last but not least, we would like to sincerely thank our instructor for helping us throughout the year.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Through participating in the Cyberfair Competition, we became more familiar with the procedures and planning of developing a website. We understood how to prepare and organize information, allowing the website to be easily comprehended. Besides, we also acknowledge the importance of cooperation. Under the circumstance which everyone has a lot to do for school, each group members has tried their best to work together and complete this research project as a whole.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Applications used: Google Docs, Google Form, Adobe MUSE

Equipments: Mobile Phone (record, contact), laptop and computer (record information, organize information, create website), USB (store information, send information), interactive whiteboard (group presenation, disscussion, structure outline), single lens reflex camera (photography, video shooting), local access optical network and wireless wifi network (information research, provide internet source for laptops and computer)

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

As we are working on our research, we find that Taiwanese students are extremely unfamiliar with Chinese Calligraphy, including its categories, history or relevant Chinese Calligraphers. Only a minority of the population has experienced in creating Chinese Calligraphy due to the influence of family background or personal preference. As a result, we believe, “Chinese Calligraphy”, as one of the most essential component of Chinese traditional culture, we ought to encourage the education system of Taiwan to promote Chinese Calligraphy Culture.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Though this research project, each group members has improved a lot; one majority change is the attitude of learning. We have became more active about accomplishing this project, and we also learnt the significance of cooperation between team members. Other than that, all of us were willing to explore things we have not tried before, for instance, creating and analyzing a survey. This research project also allowed us to improve our skills in expressing language, and being more accurate and specific about what we put into the website. Furthermore, it also taught us to be more flexible when encountering a difficulty, allowing us to try an alternative path in succeeding.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

This research process has allowed us to acknowledge the significance of cooperation between teammates. No matter if it is communication or work production, we all must know the importance of being understanding and helpful. This skill could also be applied to other circumstances, for instance, in-school or work place in the future, cooperation is extremely crucial.
