Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Changhua County is currently comprised of 2 cities, 6 towns and 18 townships spread across a total area of 1,074 km2. The population in Changhua is approximately 1.28 million. In 1946, Taichung Prefecture was reorganized as Taichung County Government and Changhua City Government. In 1950, Changhua County Government was founded with 2 municipalities: Changhua City and Yuanlin City; 24 towns and townships

2. Summary of Our Project

It is commonly called the Guanyin Pavilion, and is the oldest Buddha temple in Changhua. It is acclaimed to be ?The first temple of Changhua?. The main worship is Guanyin Buddha. Changhua became a county in 1723 and this temple was built the year after. It was then known as Kaihua meaning the opening the first Buddha temple in Changhua. Having been destroyed by earthquakes and fire in the past, the temple has been through several renovations. Luckily, local people advocated collecting money to rebuild it. This temple is a Buddha building with three bays, two entrances and two covered porches. It sits east-north and faces west-south. The front hall was once pulled down in order to broaden the adjoining road, after which a special gate was erected. The green stone lions heads are gentle and fine, and the carving technique is superb. They are (one of) the best stone carving work of early Taiwan.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Under the concept of community building, community-based schools and community schools have become one of the important goals of educational reform, which emphasizes that schools should effectively integrate with their surrounding communities. Due to the close and continuous interaction among the staff members in the school, we can view school as a community. if we effectively enhance the sense of school, student satisfaction will be significantly improved, which will be likely to have a positive impact on the operation and teaching in schools.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

During our interviews, many shop owners were very kind. They always answered the questions we asked in detail. When they heard that we were junior high school students, they collected data for the special webpage competition. Some people would cheer for us. , and even the store invited us to eat! After several interviews, we also learned more about Changhua Temple. The staff of the temples also let us take pictures as the material of the website.
