Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Taiwan is narrow and densely populated, and the situation of population concentration in urban areas is increasingly severe, especially in Taipei City. Urban development not only endangers the ecological environment, but also causes environmental pollution. Now is the time for us to reflect on such issues. Urban development should not only be based on human beings, but should also consider environmental protection, ecological conservation, and reduction of the impact on the environment. Only in this way can a harmonious coexistence relationship between man and nature be established. Our research topic is to reflect on the current crises of the earth, human beings and urban development based on sustainable development. Hopefully, through this study project, we can awaken everyone to cherish the earth's resources, care for the environment, implement the concept of sustainable environment, and jointly create a healthy and comfortable living environment for the cities where we live.

2. Summary of Our Project

Human beings and the earth are an inseparable life community. Unfortunately, in order to meet the needs of life, human beings consume unrestrainedly, excessively exploit resources and develop the economy, etc. In these processes, human beings often ignore the impact of pollution, which makes the pollution problems become increasingly severe, seriously affect the ecological environment, and lead to the crises of the earth. Moreover, due to the rapid population growth, in order to meet the demands, human beings must continue to expand land, exploit raw materials and produce in large quantities, which rapidly consumes most of the resources on the earth. Such large-scale economic development also has a great impact on the ecological environment and human health. In recent years, various countries around the world have begun to attach importance to the issue of 'circular economy' and used new technologies to re-manufacture waste, which significantly reduces the consumption of energy and resources and the generation of waste to solve current environmental problems. Hopefully, through the implementation of the “circular economy” development mode, the coexistence of human economic development and the ecological environment can be taken into account. Our research topic is to reflect on the current crises of earth resources, human health and ecological environment based on sustainable development. Hopefully, through this study project, we can awaken everyone to cherish the earth's resources, care for the environment, implement the concept of sustainable environment, and jointly create a healthy and comfortable living environment for the cities where we live.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

1.Collection and arrangement of data After determining the research topic, we began to spend a lot of effort to find relevant data from on-site visits, the Internet, and libraries. Due to the huge amount of data collected, we spent a lot of time on the division of labor and cooperation, and each team member had his/her own tasks. After reading, we arranged relevant data, and eventually discussed with the teacher. In terms of data collation, we also made a lot of efforts. We recorded the interview content of each interviewee, arranged, and analyzed it in detail, and then gave it to the interviewees for comparison. We were afraid that there was missing or incomplete interview content. Although it took us some time, we believed that doing so made the entire research project more complete. 2.Professional terms Since our project is mainly based on circular economy, which involves relevant circular economy theories and relevant professional terms. Therefore, it was very difficult to write research content and interview content. As a result, we had to work hard to read books in advance, ask teachers, and search websites to understand the relevant professional terms one by one, in order to overcome the difficulties encountered in research. 3.Difficulties in making web pages We had to use a lot of software when making web pages, which was not easy for us beginners who were new to web page making. Therefore, we usually used our spare time to discuss problems with the teacher and engaged in repeated attempts and exercises, which enabled us to gradually overcome the difficulties encountered. In the end, we became increasingly familiar with the concept and operation of software, and gained a lot of confidence in the production and artwork of web pages.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

In this learning journey, we felt that participating in the research project offered us a lot of valuable experiences and knowledge. In particular, we used the circular economy as the research topic. During the processes of on-site visits and data collection, we had a more in-depth understanding of urban development, ecological issues, environmental protection, energy conservation, and other related topics. At the beginning, from team composition, tacit understanding cultivation, topic selection, data collection and arrangement to web page production, we encountered many difficulties in the research process. However, we tried our best to eliminate any obstacles and achieve our goal step by step. Such a joy was indescribable in words. Of course, during the process of completing our research project, we were assisted by some enthusiastic and kind people along the way, and we have also received a lot of encouragement and support from our teachers.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

1.Integration with environmental education course The purpose of this research project is mainly to enable everyone to understand that the issue of climate change is actually closely related to everyone. Although our economy is growing rapidly, the environmental load has increased along with the economic growth. For example, when a typhoon comes, it always causes flooding or landslides. The reason is that the environment is over-developed, our green space is getting less and less, and there are factories and buildings everywhere. In order to protect the ecological environment where we live and slow down global warming, our research project focuses on ecology, environmental protection, energy saving, and “circular economy” as the theme aiming to awaken everyone to maintain the sustainable ecology of the earth. 2.Integration with local education course During the implementation of this research project, we used Wednesday afternoons to visit the places related to the theme to collect data and take pictures, edit the information and research data collected on the webpage, and share our research results with other classmates through the Internet. 3.Combination with nature science and living technology course We used technological tools—digital cameras and digital voice recorders—to collect the information on the people, things, and objects we observed one by one. Moreover, we also searched for information through the school network and used the school computer to transmit our research reports and research progress online on time. 4.Mathematics field In this research project, the questionnaire was one of the sources of our research data. We sorted the returned questionnaires, counted the frequency of each option respectively, entered the data into the computer to calculate the percentage and form a statistical chart. Lastly, we gave explanations about the analysis results.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

1.On-site visits We used the opportunity of each on-site visit to explain the theme and purpose of our research project. According to the research project, we interviewed scholars and experts, government officials, and private enterprises in person, hoping to learn more about circular economy, environmental protection, and energy conservation, as well as their opinions on issues from the interviews. 2.Parent participation Parents were encouraged to be a part of us and participate in the research project together. 3.Community interviews We performed on-site interviews and questionnaire survey to enable community residents to learn of our research theme and purpose. Our purpose was to understand the opinions of the community residents on circular economy, as well as to promote the concept of environmental protection and energy conservation and the ecological environment crisis faced by the earth and human beings during the interviews. 4.School propaganda The school teachers have been supportive to our research project and encouraged us from time to time. On each occasion, the principal and director took the opportunity to let everyone know about our research theme, which was also conveyed to parents to request everyone to provide resources and assistances. The principal and directors played the best roles as our best “ambassadors” and spokespersons at school.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

During the research project, we believe that human beings and the earth are a community of life. However, currently, human beings continue to consume the earth’s resources and create pollution for their own economic development, which not only jeopardizes human health, but also creates crises to the earth. For example, the deterioration of the ecological environment, serious pollution, and the depletion of earth resources, have caused crises to human beings. Although the over-exploitation caused by economic development cause some problems to the environment, if we take actions in time and implement appropriate policies and measures, these problems can be solved. Therefore, hopefully, the future development should not prioritize human beings, but should prioritize environment to reach the balance between human beings and ecological environment and develop sustainable circular economy, which requires the joint support and practice of everyone.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

To successfully accomplish the research project, we would especially thank those professionals, scholars, and Environmental Volunteer, parents, and teachers who have been interviewed by us, provided data and opinions to us, that allow the specific presentation of our research contents, and let our research be completed in the timely fashion. Without your enthusiastic support and consultancy, we were unable to finish it smoothly. The research fruition should be attributed to you.

Most importantly, we would like to thank the constant encouragement and backup support from Principal, Directors, and teachers. This allows us be confident to finish the project. In addition, we would like to pay attribute to three instructors who sacrificed precious time and instructed us with great patience. Hereby, we would also like to thank our friends who helped us and our supportive parents. The work is dedicated to you. Wish you all healthy and everyday is a fine day.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

In recent years, various countries around the world have begun to attach importance to the issue of “circular economy,” with an aim to take into account the coexistence relationship between human economic development and the ecological environment, in order to achieve the sustainable development of the earth. Therefore, in order to achieve sustainable development of the earth, it is impossible for only a few people to recycle resources or save energy and reduce carbon emissions. Instead, all people must take actions for environmental protection and energy conservation. In this way, a different appearance of “sustainable earth” will be presented in the end. Lastly, we believe that the deterioration of global warming and climate change are established facts, and the living environment of human beings will be increasingly affected by extreme climate. Since a large number of people gather in cities, once a disaster occurs, the damage may be even greater. Hopefully, this research project may awaken everyone to cherish the earth’s resources, care for the environment, implement the concept of sustainable environment, and jointly create a healthy and comfortable living environment for the cities where we live.
