Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

'Our community' is a precious and vibrant place that combines natural beauty with a welcoming atmosphere. The environment here is rich with greenery and offers a sense of peace that makes it truly special. What makes our community even more remarkable are the people—friendly, caring, and always willing to lend a helping hand. Their warmth and kindness create a strong sense of belonging and connection, making this community a wonderful place to live.

However, like many places, our community faces challenges, such as managing waste and protecting the environment. These issues remind us of the importance of coming together to preserve the precious surroundings we cherish. By embracing eco-friendly practices and working collectively, we can ensure that the beauty and harmony of our community remain intact for future generations. Our community is not just a place to live—it’s a testament to the strength of human connections and the value of a clean and thriving environment.

2. Summary of Our Project

Our International Schools CyberFair Web Project focuses on the transformative potential of Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) as a sustainable waste management and energy solution while addressing challenges and misconceptions about its adoption in Taiwan. SRF, produced from non-recyclable waste, reduces landfill waste, curtails greenhouse gas emissions, and serves as a cost-efficient alternative to fossil fuels, contributing to Taiwan’s 2050 net-zero emissions goal. However, challenges such as misconceptions about pollution risks and low public awareness persist. To tackle these issues, our team investigated SRF production at Da Qing Environmental Protection Corporation, observing advanced technologies like TYRANNOSAURUS shredders and eddy current separators. We also conducted interviews with industry professionals, surveyed the public, and organized an interactive campaign featuring a night market and artistic garbage installations to promote awareness. This project bridges knowledge gaps, fosters public acceptance, and highlights SRF’s role in sustainable development and environmental protection.

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:not sure

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:4-6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Our team faced numerous challenges that allowed us to gain a higher sense of achievement after overcoming them. Our challenges include communication, collaboration, and decision-making. Within this 10-member team, we’ve got people from different grade levels, classes, and even people who haven’t met each other before. At first, our team actually froze and stuck for nearly an entire month without substantive progression. It was not until we went to the interview of the Dakim Environmental Protection Enterprise, that the fun and profound experience pulled together resulting in a deeper revolutionary relationship. On the other hand, the collaboration of work is also a hard barrier stopping us from maximizing the efficiency in working. At the end of the day, every one of us is already exhausted, and can only apply 50% of our potential energy. Thus, to overthrow this bad habit, our instructor proceeded to a 15-minute meeting with us to counsel the current situation and to provoke an enthusiastic motivational speech from us. After that meeting around October, our team resurrected and put in all efforts towards the analysis of the project. Despite the challenges faced in the group, we’ve also struggled to find the target for our interview. Due to the fact that SRF is an extremely innovative idea seen in Taiwan, thus, there is limited transparency and information on SRF online. However, after some hard findings, we found a few potential industries, but they are all small enterprises that insist on really little information. Fortunately, by applying our full sincerity and request on phone calls, messaging, and emailing, we successfully met the Dakim Environmental Protection Enterprise. In conclusion, overcoming challenges not only strengthened our teamwork but also helped us grow as individuals, turning obstacles into valuable learning experiences.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Through this experience, we gained deeper insight into Taiwan's waste management challenges, particularly the need to reduce reliance on incineration and landfills. It reinforced the critical importance of adopting environmentally friendly solutions like SRF to promote sustainability and energy efficiency in society.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Our CyberFair project addressed a variety of content standards, including digital literacy, research skills, and community engagement. It aligned with our school, district, and state curriculum guidelines by emphasizing scholarship, innovation, and adaptability, while fostering talents and skills essential for future success. Through this project, we developed valuable skills such as website design, graphic design, data collection, teamwork, and time management. We practiced group concepts like collaboration, leadership, conflict resolution, and task delegation, which enhanced our planning, organization, and decision-making abilities. The project also deepened our understanding of Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF), including its functionality, significance, and why it is a sustainable solution. As students, we recognized our role in contributing to a dynamic and diverse school community. This project highlighted how our educational system fosters talent and builds practical skills. Additionally, using the Internet for learning proved more effective than traditional methods by streamlining research, enhancing productivity, and integrating AI to explore global innovations.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

To successfully complete our CyberFair project, we utilized a variety of tools and technologies that greatly supported our workflow and ensured efficiency. We used 10 computers for content creation and website development, allowing us to systematically organize and edit information while collaborating as a team. 5 smartphones were essential for brainstorming sessions and on-the-go note-taking, ensuring that ideas were quickly captured during discussions. A smartboard provided us with a visual platform to present, explain, and refine our project goals, making it easier to share progress with a broader audience. For documentation, we relied heavily on digital cameras to record interviews and capture high-quality visuals, preserving critical details and moments for further analysis and presentation. We also referred to online newspapers to research potential stakeholders and gather background information for our interviews, which strengthened the credibility of our project. All these tools were located at our school, where the IT room provided access to the necessary computers and the smartboard, while smartphones and cameras were brought in by team members. Although the tools were not officially donated, they were generously loaned to us by our school, which fully supported our project’s needs. Among all the tools, the most valuable were the computers and digital cameras. Computers allowed us to use tools like Google Cloud to organize our tasks, collaborate efficiently, and track our progress to stay on schedule. The digital cameras, on the other hand, played a crucial role during interviews, as they helped us record key details, tones, and expressions while preserving important and memorable moments. These technologies were vital in enhancing creativity, organization, and productivity throughout our project, ensuring that we captured every aspect of our journey while presenting a well-rounded and cohesive final product.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

The students utilized both online and offline platforms. We created an online survey form to ask our community and people around about their opinions on SRF. Through social media and other communication platforms, we reach over 150 people to share their opinions on this topic. We include both the pros and cons of the technology and its current situation in Taiwan in our form, which helps the general public to have a better understanding of the potential and application of the technology in Taiwan. On the other hand, our students also do an on-the-spot interview at the Linkou night market. Targeting the vendor and customers. Making a board that let them stick stickers on to vote for yes or no, whether they knew the technology or not. If the respondent has time, we will have further explanation of what SRF is and ask about their opinion and point of view again. As for school, we make Halloween light installation art using paper cup waste. When people walk by, they can have more insights about the technology as we provide explanations.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Through our project, the idea of SRF will be spreaded more in the community. It will allow more people in our community to learn about what SRF is. By allowing people to get in touch with this topic, they eliminate their concern. We had also visited the company that makes SRF, we believe by pulling this move it could boost the confidence of the company. In an environment surrounded by negative thoughts, they may become more confident after serving as a catalyst for their mission. Most of the feedback we’d received was quite positive, most people in our community liked the project we were doing. They really supported it and were grateful for our help.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We asked friends and family to help promote the form, and we are incredibly grateful for their enthusiastic support and willingness to assist us. Their help in spreading the word made a significant difference in the success of our project. When we went out to conduct street interviews, we were pleasantly surprised by how many passersby were willing to stop midway in their busy routines to let us ask questions. Their openness and willingness to participate were invaluable, and we deeply appreciate their cooperation in making our research more meaningful. It’s not always easy to approach strangers, but their kindness made the process much smoother and more enjoyable. In addition, the school was very accommodating and kindly allowed us to put up decorations on the walls. This gesture provided a welcoming and visually appealing environment for our project, helping us create a sense of community and engagement. We are truly thankful for the school's generosity and support, which contributed significantly to the overall success of the project. Without the help and kindness of our friends, family, passersby, and the school, this project wouldn’t have been possible. We are grateful for the collaborative spirit and positive energy that everyone brought to the table, and we feel fortunate to have received such tremendous assistance and encouragement
