Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Our community of 7th and 8th graders focuses on the development of badminton in Taiwan. We discuss and share ideas with each other and work together to learn about the history of badminton in Taiwan through group discussions and in-depth research. From the early days of grassroots training in Taiwan to the brilliant achievements in the international arena, we realized that behind the success of badminton players, there is no better way than hard work and training. We took this project seriously and hope that through our promotional efforts, we will be able to contribute to the future development of badminton in Taiwan.

2. Summary of Our Project

In our project, the promotion of badminton in Taiwan is the theme of our promotion. A few decades ago, badminton was not yet popular in Taiwan and only a few enthusiasts were engaged in the sport. However, with the popularity of the hobby among the public and the government's promotion, badminton began to gain popularity, which led to the establishment of many courts and teams, laying a solid foundation for the development of badminton in Taiwan.

Badminton has become a common sport in Taiwan and there are many international players who have made a name for themselves, such as Zhou Tiancheng, Dai Ziyin, Li Yang, and Wang Qi Lin. They have not only raised the popularity of badminton in Taiwan, but have also inspired many people to take up the sport.

There are now many areas in Taiwan with good training facilities, and the number of professional teams continues to grow. We have also noticed that the government and corporations have begun to support badminton in a big way, including organizing and preparing for international badminton tournaments, and badminton in Taiwan has gained an important position in the international arena.

Ultimately, the success of badminton in Taiwan not only demonstrates the excellence of badminton in Taiwan, but also symbolizes the spirit of sports in Taiwan.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

In carrying out this project, we encountered a number of problems and challenges. Our biggest problem in this project was the interviews. We planned to interview badminton players. However, it was difficult to find a suitable time for the interviews due to their competition schedules and other commitments. Therefore, we need to keep coordinating with the interviewees to find a suitable time or find other athletes to interview. Another challenge was creating the website. At first, we were not familiar with creating a website, so we spent a lot of time trying to understand how websites work and trying to learn everything we could about building websites.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Badminton is gradually developing into an indispensable part of people's lives, and the history of badminton in Taiwan is a story full of honor and achievement. Through our website promotion activities, we will learn about the exciting history of badminton in Taiwan from school activities, community development to international competitions, and recognize the players who have worked hard for badminton in Taiwan. Through the website introduction and practical interactive experience, we feel the charm and perseverance of badminton, and experience the growth of badminton in Taiwan together!

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

In our efforts, we found the need to continually improve our English skills, and using Google Translate to help me complete questions in English that I didn't know how to do made us understand the great value of the English language. As our understanding deepened, we realized that not only did our knowledge increase, but so did our rapport and our connection to each other. Interaction with the contestants also revealed the answers we wanted to know. We also found that through the power of the internet, it helped us to understand different aspects and knowledge in a friendly way. These badminton players who worked hard to qualify for the Olympics deepened the understanding of her in our minds. During our conversations, we also learned about their badminton backgrounds, which made us understand more about the benefits and joys of badminton. We believe that with our spirit of hard work and perseverance, we can combine everyone's knowledge to solve the mistakes we found at one time and improve them, exploring them from different aspects. We believe that by making a pact, we will be able to achieve good results.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

We used a variety of tools and technologies, including tablets, computers, and cell phones, to help us with our web exhibit research project. At first, we relied on tablets and computers as our primary tools and to organize our information on Google Docs. For the interviews, we used the tablets to create forms for our interviewees to fill out and used our cell phones to take pictures of the forms.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We made colorful posters with pictures of badminton and hung them in lively places such as the gym, library and corridors. The posters included a QR code for our website and a message: “We also gave a short presentation at a school assembly, sharing interesting facts about badminton and inviting people to come and see our project. We created an Instagram page for our project and posted updates such as photos of our work, videos of interviews and fun badminton quizzes. By using posters and social media, we got more students and the community excited about badminton and our program!

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

We created this topic because we want more people to know the history of badminton in Taiwan. Badminton has become very popular in Taiwan since the country achieved excellent results in the Olympic badminton tournament. Through this opportunity, we hope to help more people gain a deeper understanding of the history of badminton in Taiwan and to promote the sport.

In order to promote the sport of badminton, we produced this special topic to introduce the history of badminton in Taiwan and the achievements of the athletes. In addition, we conducted field trips to interview badminton coaches and athletes. Through this feature, we hope to attract more people to participate in badminton, so that the spirit of badminton in Taiwan can be passed on and carried forward.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Our group created a number of posters and posted them outside the classroom for other students to view and learn about our research. We also set up a comment section to encourage people to share their thoughts. In addition, we interviewed elementary school students and asked them to fill out a questionnaire about badminton, which helped us to understand their passion for the sport.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

This experience not only deepened our understanding of badminton, but also gave us a deep insight into different aspects of badminton. We learned about famous players in different fields and the history of badminton in Taiwan. We also developed the basic skills of finding information efficiently, extracting key points and eliminating unnecessary information. One of the most valuable lessons was the importance of openness and transparency. Questionnaire surveys can be conducted for different age groups to analyze the differences in interest and awareness of badminton among different age groups.

Notably, adults in their 20s perceive badminton as a social activity to be played socially or recreationally with friends and family. In contrast, badminton teams in the elementary school years are usually more focused on fun than serious competition, and usually require personal effort and the influence of friends and family. It can be seen that badminton manifests itself in different ways at different stages of life, and that people of different ages have different motivations for participating in the sport.
