1. Description of Our Community
Hunan Elementary School, formerly known as 'Xihu Ordinary Elementary School', was founded on April 1, 1921, during the Japanese colonial period. It is located next to the Xihu Sugar Factory in Xihu Town, Changhua County, Taiwan. In the past, it was exclusively for Japanese students. The children of sugar factory employees attended the school. The name of the school went through many reforms and was named 'Hunan National Primary School in Xihu Town, Changhua County' on August 1, 1968. It is a century-old school with a total of 17 classes and 404 students.
2. Summary of Our Project
Xihu Middle Street is a street starting from Xihu Sugar Factory and extending to Xihu Fu'an Palace. During the Japanese colonial period, it was the most prosperous area in Xihu Town. Hunan Elementary School was once a Japanese public school, and it was also a school for the children of the sugar factory. It is closely related to the culture and life of the sugar factory. In 2024, we took the opportunity to participate in the International Online Expo to explore the tourism, history and culture of Xihu Sugar Factory. This year, we have discovered the beauty of the historical buildings of Xihu Middle Street through deepening and extending it. We hope that through this online blog, more people can see the long history of Xihu Middle Street.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome
During planning we encountered two obstacles: First, because the place we want to visit is a street, there are a lot of pedestrians and cars on the road, which will cause inconvenience and danger to the activities of community walks and small tour guides’ explanations. Therefore, through the coordination and leadership of multiple teachers, as well as pre-departure communication with students, we enabled the investigation activities to be carried out safely and without affecting others. Second, we encountered the problem of insufficient height for taking pictures, because many characteristic buildings in Xihu Middle Street are located in higher places, and taking pictures from bottom to top cannot capture the beauty. Therefore, we tried our best to overcome the technical problems of taking pictures through the support of Google Street View, shooting across the street, setting up tripods, and asking teachers and neighbors to help.
5. Our Project Sound Bite
This competition allowed students on campus to better understand the streets that are closely related to them, and discovered many historical trajectories and cultural beauties that are fleeting and usually not noticed. Through our research and data collection, many students suddenly realized that their lives were so close to historical buildings. They were surprised to find that there were so many beautiful buildings hidden deep in Xihu Middle Street. During the field visit, team members met many friendly people who gave us positive encouragement and support for our willingness to interview and visit Xihu Middle Street.
6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?
Students learn to collect materials through interviews, document sorting, online information search, and on-site photography and recording. They also serve as small tour guides in the field and use oral presentations, personal practice, and paper and pen records to test their learning results. Through online research on special topics, students' learning abilities can be integrated, thereby cultivating students' perception and literacy of life.
