Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Our local community refers primarily to the Tamsui area in New Taipei City, Taiwan, where our school, Tamkang Senior High School, is located. Tamsui is a historic district with a rich cultural heritage, shaped by the interactions of indigenous traditions, maritime trade, religious practices, and modern urban development. The community includes local residents, cultural workers, historians, temples, schools, and families who collectively preserve and pass down local history and traditions.

2. Summary of Our Project

Our International Schools CyberFair project presents the life story of Chi Wen-hao, focusing particularly on the struggles and efforts he experienced before becoming well known. Through our website, we aim to highlight the perseverance, determination, and challenges that shaped his journey. By collecting historical information, conducting interviews, and organizing our research digitally, we tell the story of how his early hardships played an important role in his later achievements. This project not only introduces his personal story but also helps preserve an important piece of local history for our community.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:2-3

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:2-3

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

Our classroom has reliable computer and Internet access, which helped us complete our CyberFair project efficiently. Many students also have Internet access at home, allowing us to continue research and collaboration outside of school. We used these resources to search for information, organize our materials, and design our website about Chi Wen-hao.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

During the process of creating the website, we often encountered various challenges. Since each team member had different ideas, disagreements sometimes arose during discussions. In addition, while building the website, programming errors would occasionally occur, and it was not always easy to identify the source of the problem. As a result, we had to carefully review the code line by line to locate and fix the mistakes. While collecting information, we also found that some materials were very limited. Therefore, in order to obtain more accurate and reliable details, we even interviewed the close relatives of this historical figure to better understand the real events.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

It was a meaningful and honorable experience for us to represent Tamkang High School in the 2023 International Schools CyberFair. Our website, “Ji Wen-hao – A Man Dedicated to Tamsui,” introduces his life and achievements. As a successful entrepreneur and alumni of Tamkang High School, Ji Wen-hao has devoted himself to preserving Tamsui’s culture and promoting local development. Through this website, we hope to share his dedication and let people worldwide learn about his contributions to the community and his hometown.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Our CyberFair project connected with subjects such as history, language arts, and information technology. By researching the life of Chi Wen-hao, we practiced finding reliable sources, understanding historical context, and organizing information. This supports our curriculum’s focus on local history and cultural heritage.

We also developed communication and writing skills by presenting our research clearly in both Chinese and English. Through building the website, we learned basic web design and how to use digital tools responsibly.

Working as a team helped us practice cooperation, discussion, and task sharing. Using the Internet made learning more effective because we could access a wide range of information and multimedia resources. This project helped us connect classroom learning with real-world research and better understand the importance of preserving local history.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

To complete our CyberFair project, we used classroom computers and the Internet to research digital archives, news articles, and information about Chi Wen-hao. Many students also used their home computers to continue research after school.

We used smartphones and digital cameras to record interviews and collect photos. Libraries, books, and newspapers helped us verify historical information. To organize our research, we used word processors and note-taking applications.

Finally, we built our website using HTML and CSS to present our research with text, images, and multimedia. The Internet and web design tools were the most valuable technologies because they helped us gather information and share our project clearly online.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

During our CyberFair project, we acted as ambassadors for our school by introducing our research to people in our community. We contacted family members, community members, and people familiar with Chi Wen-hao through interviews, conversations, and online communication. During these interactions, we explained the purpose of our project and how we were researching and presenting his life story.

These conversations helped us collect valuable information and personal perspectives. Many people were supportive and interested in our work, and they shared stories and experiences that helped us better understand our topic.

By communicating with others and presenting our research online through our website, we represented our school and shared our project with a wider audience.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Our CyberFair project has had a positive impact on our community by raising awareness of Ji Wen-hao’s contributions to Tamsui and its cultural development. By documenting his life and achievements on our website, we preserved local history and provided a resource for students, teachers, and residents to learn about a significant community figure. The project also inspired discussions about civic engagement and the importance of giving back to one’s hometown. In the future, we hope it will encourage more young people to explore local history, participate in community projects, and recognize the value of preserving Tamsui’s heritage for generations to come.
