Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Located off the coast of Southeast Asia, Taiwan is known for its diverse ecosystem and wildlife. Meanwhile, technology industries are expanding beyond mere profit to the prosperity of our island and the globe. Diving into their efforts towards sustainability is crucial to step towards a better community. By exploring one of the companies that utilize recycled materials as their product material, we can gain a better understanding towards Taiwan's stance in the international circular economy. Creative Tech Textile Company is one of the various companies that has made significant progress in this area by using oyster shells to produce textile. We hope by investigating this project, we could promote recycled products and raise public awareness about environmental issues.

2. Summary of Our Project

In this project, our team is analyzing Taiwanese industries' efforts towards sustainable production by examining a specific example--the Creative Tech Textile Company. This company recycles oyster shells from food waste and reuses its powder to produce textile products that have better function. Despite the massive cost in the investment, they are determined to promote recycled products and reduce production waste. By studying their methods and motivation, we are willing to share their influence on Taiwanese and global industries. Their efforts towards the development of a circular economy demonstrates how innovative products can make a big change in our environment and society. In conclusion, this project helps global citizens to recognize the urgency of environmental issues and the influence of industrial efforts towards a sustainable community.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Despite learning and adapting among our groups, we struggled in several aspects. First, contacting the company for an interview was a major issue since we are not sure whether Mr. Wang is willing to accept our request. Fortunately, he was supportive and welcome, which we were really grateful to have this wonderful research experience to delve into their perspective. Additionally, time management was also a crucial factor in the completion of our project. To address this, we distributed roles and tasks to members based on their strengths in order to enhance efficiency and quality of our project. For example, we leave the website design to a member that is interested in artistic tasks to make the website visually appealing. Lastly, finding relevant and credible information about the Creative Tech Textile company was difficult since it is a local company in Taiwan. Therefore, we used a lot of primary information from the interview itself to get a deeper understanding of the technology and team. Overall, overcoming these issues not only allowed us to produce a website that is complete and thoughtfully designed, but it also developed our skills of critical thinking and problem solving.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Students: Participating in the International Schools CyberFair brought our team together because our communication and collaboration skills improved as we explored innovative technologies and ways to support the sustainability of our community and even the planet. Furthermore, CyberFair deepened our knowledge of the surrounding environment and identified core issues, inspiring us to become future leaders who point out and solve major issues efficiently.

School: Our participation enhanced our research abilities and critical thinking skills. This allows students who represent the school in any competition to demonstrate their strong abilities on the world stage.

Community: CyberFair allowed us to understand our community better as we conducted research and interviews about real-world issues. Additionally, this project inspires all members within our team to appreciate our community and those who contribute to the sustainability of our precious planet in any way possible.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Our research fullfills our school's IB learner program. Our curiousity showcases we are inquirers that take real action to satisfy our questions. We also proved ourselves as communicators by delievering our subject, Creative Tech Textile Company's message to the world by displaying their work on our website. Our project on Creative Tech Textile showcases an effective implementation of interdisciplinary curriculum standards, which connects the gaps of knowledge theory with real-world innovations. Through the exploration of CEO Eddie Wang's leadership and the manufacture of Seawool, we directly covered the standards of environmental science by studying models of circular economy and the upcycling of marine waste. The analysis of the company's growing global expansion and its strategic alliance with well-known retailers incorporated the business and economic curriculum requirements, namely, the sustainable supply chain management and market adaption. Moreover, the professional interviewing and synthesis of complex technical data processes enhanced our technology knowledge and literacy skills, which consists of high level of digital communication and inquiry-based learning. One key concept that we practiced in this topic is circular economy, which connects to the value of social and environmental awareness. Overall, this project demonstrates that we could apply social responsibility frameworks to contemporary industries, which exhibits a thorough understanding of cross-circular objectives in the context of textile innovation.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

In this investigation project, we utilized computers for most of our digital research. Everyone used their computer to gather information and produce text, so a total of 10 computers were used to complete this task. We used credible webpages as our information sources like local newspapers and the Company's website. We used google docs to record information and construct content in our website. We used Google Forms to create a survey and collect results from up to 82 responses, and we used Google Sheets to organize our data. Google sheets also allowed us to make our numercal data into graphs and charts, creating visuals of our results. We organized and shared all of our information in google drives to enhance convinence for our group members. In addition, online platforms were used to design and develop our CyberFair website, enabling us to present information in a structured and professional manner. Most of these tools are provided by our school. They are all beneficial of improving the efffectiveness and efficiency of our work.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

Throughout our CyberFair project, we acted as ambassadors and spokespersons for our school, community, and local culture through both in person and online communication. When we reached out to the Creative Tech Textile Company and conducted interviews, we were representing KCIS as responsible student researchers. We are especially thankful to Mr. Eddie Wang's open and welcoming attitude that supported our research. A small story that is worth mentioning is that during the interview, we actually had the chance to try on the clothes made from oyster shells. Mr. Wang even placed the special material, smawarm on our hands to let us feel its texture and warmth. In these on site interviews, the company viewed us as young representatives of Taiwan who were eager to understand and share local environment innovations. In addition, participating in CyberFair, an international platform, allows us to become spokespeople that support our community on a global scale. Through our project we shared how Creative Tech Textile Company transformed local challenges into advancement in textile technology and another step forward for the environment. We are representing the school and act as ambassadors of Taiwan’s local industries, environmental value, and voices to a worldwide audience.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Our project could make a change in the Taiwanese and global society. By promoting the works and progress of the Creative Tech Textile Company, we are willing to urge more and more industries to follow their path. By creating this website, not only we could display the efforts of Mr. Wang and inspire more industrial professionals to join the circular economy, but we could also impact students and normal citizens to contribute to the environment in their own way. In our project, we introduced topics like circular economy and new techonlogies from Creative Tech Textile. We hope that these information could benefit individuals that are conducting similar research and raise environmental awareness, solving climate change and habitat crisis. From our webpage, viewers could learn about the current condition of our land and how they could make a difference. Additionally, we also constructed new relationships between industries by urging them to 'contribute and unite', stepping towards sustainable production as a whole. Since webpages are more accessable to most citizens, this work could efficiently promote recycled materials and raise awareness among our environment.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Our CyberFair project involves support from industry professionals and teachers. In order to deepen our understanding of the textile industry and the process of turning recycled oyster shells into clothing, we interviewed Mr. Eddie Wang, the CEO of Creative Tech Textile, which is the first company around the world to use oyster shells as a manufacturing material. His clear explanations have helped our team learn more about the history of the textile industry, the issue of wasted oyster shell piles in Taiwan, and the growth of Creative Tech Textile. Additionally, our team gained support from Dr. Bear Shaw who guided us throughout this project, teaching us how to conduct surveys and create websites. We highly appreciate all the people who have made our project possible.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

There were definitely some interesting insights and discoveries that we've discovered while doing this assignment and research. This project helped us realize that oyster shells, which seem like simple food waste, are actually a valuable material with numerous uses. We were surprised by how the oyster industry works, and also how oyster shells can turn into fabric materials that support our clothings. Furthermore, this project presented our understanding of circular economy systems, increased our interest in sustainability and environmental innovation, while promoting SDGS and all sustainable products, celebrating the idea of caring about our environment around us, and our home Earth.
