Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Puxin Township is located in the center of the Changhua Plain, with flat terrain. It is adjacent to Xihu Township and Yongjing Township of Yuanlin City. It is a typical agricultural township and a satellite city of Yuanlin with a population of about 33,000. It was originally developed by Hakka people and later assimilated by Minnan culture, becoming a 'Hoklo-Hakka' cultural center. The climate is suitable for agricultural production, with three main products: honey red grapes, guava, and golden honey mangoes, known as the 'Three Honeys of Puxin'.

2. Summary of Our Project

The school is the cultural center of the community and the birthplace of community aesthetics. Taiping Elementary School, located in Taiping Village, Changhua County, is a typical rural school with lush greenery. The walls of the teaching building and the school fence are covered with beautiful mosaic tile murals. The campus contains many unknown beauties, but we, who are in it, often overlook them. Therefore, we decided to explore the campus mosaic art and lead everyone to rediscover the beauty of Taiping Elementary School.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

Our school currently has one computer lab with 30 computers for all students to use. All computers in the school have internet access. In addition, the school provides open WiFi for everyone to connect wirelessly. There are also 60 iPads for each class to use during class, allowing us to easily conduct discussions, search, and print documents at school. Each team member has a computer at home with internet access via broadband fiber optic network. After school, we continue our research using email, network disks, and interactive websites.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

1.Translation difficulties: Since English is not our native or second language, and none of us have studied it for very long, translating Chinese into English was a daunting task. We used an online translation system to check the accuracy of the translations and then asked our teacher for final confirmation.

2.Image integration difficulties: To clearly showcase the beauty of our school's mosaic murals, we took many photos. However, displaying these photos completely within the limited website space was a major challenge. Fortunately, our teacher taught us how to use PhotoScape software for image integration, which was a huge help.

3.Website creation difficulties: Due to our lack of web design skills, we encountered significant difficulties in website creation. With the teacher's guidance and the mutual assistance of group members, we completed the website step by step.

4.Time management difficulties: School courses and activities were already very tight, so we could only use lunch breaks and after-school time for research. We often made full use of computer technology, communicating and exchanging information through email and interactive websites. In addition, each of us worked hard to complete our assigned tasks on time, utilizing weekends with the help of our families. We also shared our research results to help everyone better understand the content.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

The biggest takeaway from this study was inspiring students and residents to pay more attention to the school. Through the research process, we gained a better understanding of our school and deepened our sense of identity with it. Through our sharing, people in our hometown were also able to care more about everything in our hometown. In addition, by spreading the word online, more people can see the beauty of our hometown and the beauty of Taiping Elementary School, and share our project.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

1. Our project, themed around a school mosaic mural, aligns with the Ministry of Education's current school-based curriculum, using localized content to deepen the curriculum and foster students' identification with their hometown's unique characteristics. 2. Through this project, our language, information literacy, and other comprehensive learning abilities have been significantly enhanced. Presenting research findings requires written descriptions; through extensive research and organization, we have improved our ability to narrate and integrate information. The process involved planning, discussion, field research, report writing, and other tasks requiring extensive communication, coordination, and teamwork. This learning experience has enabled us to better apply classroom learning and improve our teamwork and communication skills. 3. We frequently used tools such as computers, the internet, web drives, email, and message boards, which are more efficient and convenient for research and sharing than traditional teaching methods. 4. We also learned new skills such as photography, photo editing, and web page creation. More importantly, we learned to appreciate the beauty of life.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

1. Facebook/LINE: Allows us to break free from the limitations of time and space, enabling instant information sharing and online discussions. 2. Cloud Drive: Storing large amounts of research data is a major issue, but cloud drive offers ample bandwidth, security, and allows team members to share data.

Our Technical Equipment: 1. Computer: Data processing and storage, web page creation 2. iPad: Photography 3. Broadband Network: Uploading and downloading files, discussions, and communication 4. Printer: Printing research data 5. Digital Camera: Taking photos and recording activities 6. Telephone: Contacting team members and assistants.

Our Computer Software: 1. Kompozer: Web page editing and management 2. PhotoScape: Photo editing and processing 3. Cloud Drive: Digital photo storage and management 4. Microsoft Word: Word processing 5. Internet Explorer / Google Chrome: Browsing and searching web pages 6. Filzer: Uploading web pages

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

1. Through on-site visits, we discovered the beauty of our own school, a beauty we had often overlooked in our surroundings. This research and learning experience allowed us to rediscover and appreciate our school even more. We introduced our school's beauty to all teachers and students, and also shared our findings with families and the community, helping local residents better understand and cherish the beauty of Taiping Elementary School and their hometown. 2. Hoping to let more people see the beauty of our school, we worked hard to create a website to spread its beauty. Through our website, we hope that people both domestically and internationally will be deeply impressed by our school's beauty, fostering a sense of appreciation and protection, and inspiring others to explore and cherish their hometown.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Firstly, this learning process has inspired students and residents to care more about their hometown. Students discussed their school's history with their families afterward, gaining a deeper understanding and greater concern for their school. Secondly, our project website links to the school website and the school's Facebook page, allowing more people, whether they are interested in our school or not, to see the beautiful scenery of Taiping Elementary School and share our project.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

First, I'd like to thank all the teachers and staff at Taiping Elementary School for their guidance and for providing us with diverse learning opportunities, allowing us to grow and learn in such a beautiful and friendly environment. During the project, when we encountered problems, teachers with different specialties at the school provided timely advice and guidance, enabling us to complete this challenge step by step. Furthermore, the assistance of parent volunteers was indispensable. When I went home and asked parents, everyone in the community shared their understanding of the school. Because of everyone's shared experiences, we gained a deeper understanding of the history of Taiping Elementary School.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

Interesting Discoveries: Initially, we thought the school was nothing special, but during our visit, we discovered so many beautiful mosaic murals on the walls that we had never noticed before. As the saying goes, 'the onlooker sees more of the game,' we should try to understand our school more deeply. Lessons Learned: When editing web pages, we often forgot to save, causing our painstakingly completed pages to frequently disappear. Also, when previewing initial web pages, we found that photos couldn't be displayed. After consulting with our teacher, we learned that photo file names must be in English or numbers, not Chinese characters. Surprises: Through the process of studying and organizing materials and learning through field visits, we were able to connect the knowledge learned in the classroom with real life. This inspired us that as long as we work hard, life will be full of surprises, and we should cherish and protect all the beautiful things in our hometown. Reflections: My biggest takeaway from participating in this project was learning teamwork. Because as long as the team works together, helps each other, and encourages each other, the project can proceed smoothly. In the future, we can do it again, twice, or even ten times.
