Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Our community at Kang Chiao International School is welcoming, supportive and academically driven. Students come from different cultures and backgrounds, which teaches us to understand people from different perspectives, and teaches us to be open minded, diverse is also a very important part of the community because it helps us learn and grow from each other. Everyone is encouraged to show respect to one another and work together. Teachers are knowledgeable, care about students and support them both in their studies and personal growth. In class, we learn to think critically, ask questions, and share our ideas. While outside the classroom, our school offers many opportunities to explore our interests. There are various clubs, sports teams, music programs, and leadership activities. Students can join activities that match their talents, whether it is basketball, debate, orchestra, or student council. These experiences help us gain confidence, learn responsibility, and develop new friendships. At Kang Chiao, we do not only focus on academic success but also on building good character and preparing students to become responsible citizens in the future.

2. Summary of Our Project

Our project is about stray animals and the issues they face in our community. Every day and night, countless strays suffer from unstable food sources, lack of medical care, and an unsafe living environment. We wanted to learn not just their life condition, but also the challenges they’re going through, including the reasons, and how people can help improve their lives. To learn more, we go from shelter to shelter for more and more information, talking to staff, listening to their experiences, observing the animals, and learning about the different challenges every place or shelter faces, such as lack of resources, not enough funds, shortage of volunteers or overcrowding. The more visits, the clearer we know what’s truly needed and how the community can help improve their condition. During our visits, we realized how emotional and heartbroken it can be seeing those strays crowded in cages, starving, hurting, and waiting for someone to give them a home, we all saw the look in their eyes, filled with sadness, loneliness, and quiet fear, we can’t help but feel empathy for them, the more we see the more helpless we feel, but as we look around the shelter we also notice the look in the staff members’ and the volunteers’ eyes. There was determination, gentle hope and warm love in them, they are just like heroes, they are the reason the strays can trust humans again, the reason they can finally understand what the meaning of the word “home” means, the word that used seems to be so far and untouchable for them, that was when we all agreed that we wanted to be one of the people who help. Through research, interviews and real-life observation, we hope to spread awareness about the strays. This is why we created and displayed our poster in the school hallway, to inform and remind others that while we are here living our comfortable life, there are still stray animals outside this world struggling to survive, some may be freezing, starving, injured or even mistreated.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:4-6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:not sure

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

While we were working on our project, computers offered convenience functions, and it let us complete several things. We can do our work at any time, for it helps us open google doc or any of these materials when we need it. We use computers to connect group members online, so we can chat to each other even though we don’t meet each other. Not limited by paper or pen, we use the internet instead to write all the contents we need. When we need to draw pictures, diagrams, concepts, we use tools like Boundless Notes, Sketchbook, Memorandum, and other apps to customize. The reason why it is called “customize”, is because every different type of app provides different options and technology, so we often use multiple tools at once to make up a thing. Pictures, reports were also done with computers, we do photo editing or color grading to make our interviews’ photos more wonderful. What more, we can see other schedules speeding on the google doc to discuss how to adjust our division.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

While working on this project we went from shelter to shelter to interview staff, and visit strays, although it was a meaningful experience, we faced several challenges along the way. First, scheduling interviews was not easy, some shelters are busy taking care of the strays, so it was hard to find a time that worked for both the staff and our group. While some of the shelters don't allow interviews. So we have to communicate clearly and sometimes adjust our plans. Second, some dogs are shy or scared because of their past experience, so we have to learn to be patient, and approach them gently without startling or frightening them. Another challenge was preparing good interview questions. At first, we didn’t know what to ask, but after doing some research, we created better questions and were ready for our interviews. Lastly, traveling from shelter to shelter was not easy, it required good time management and teamwork, we also have to support one another. Even though we faced these problems, the experience taught us responsibility, cooperation and empathy, also how we should learn and grow from our mistakes. These challenges have surely made our project even more unforgettable and meaningful.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

In our daily lives, the issue of stray animals should never be ignored. We plan to raise awareness by creating large posters and speaking at school assemblies, bringing to light the survival struggles and social challenges these animals face. By sharing the 'voice' of stray dogs, we want everyone to realize the severity of this issue. Through this initiative, we hope to gather the love and strength of everyone on campus. With effort and care, we can help these homeless dogs find a warm place to call home. Let’s join hands and help them with love!

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

The CyberFair project helped us use what we learned in class in real life. We practiced English by writing interview questions, summaries, and website content. Our research and interviews improved our skills in finding information, organizing ideas, and explaining them clearly. Using computers, Document, and website tools helped us build technology and digital skills. The project also connected to social studies and ethics lessons by teaching us responsibility, teamwork, and caring about community issues. We learned how to communicate respectfully with adults and professionals during interviews, and we improve our problem-solving skills when arranging visits and organizing materials. Making the website and posters boost our creativity and design abilities. SHaring our findings with classmates and the community helped us practice public speaking. In conclusion, this project showed us how classroom learning can be applied to help others and make a real difference.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Through this project, we usually use iPads, laptops and phones to record and analyze. They play an important role in our project. They help use organized information, data, and also provide form. In addition, using those convenient tools, we can easily download other apps. Those apps offered more convenient functions. When we are visiting professional people in this area, we use Voice Memos to record Q&A conversations. It helps us remember details after the interview. It is such a great tool. We also use Google Document to write down the shelter that we are going to visit. Questions, pictures that we will ask in the interview and the interviewees offered are also included in the Google Document. Lastly, we use it to record the impressions and summaries of each day we do the project. Also, we use Google to find each shelter’s information, it can help us preview what we are going to say depending on the situation of each shelter. Finally, we use Gmail and Instagram to contact, exchange information and also remind our partners when we will do what. In conclusion, those tools provide powerful functions in no limited way, it helps us create any things that we need.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We acted as ambassadors for our CyberFair project by speaking on behalf of stray dogs and animal shelters. We shared accurate information from our research and interviews, explained the problems that stray dogs face, and conveyed the voices of shelter staff and volunteers to others. Through our website, posters, and school presentations, we clearly communicated the importance of adoption, responsible pet ownership, and compassion toward stray animals, help more people understand the issue and take it seriously.Being spokesperson also helped us practice communication skills, teamwork, and empathy, as we needed to represent both the animals and the shelter staff accurately and respectfully. By presenting real-life examples and interview stores, we made the issues more relatable to our audience. Our efforts encouraged classmates and community members to take action, like adopting or supporting local shelters. Acting as spokesperson also taught us the responsibility of sharing accurate information. In future,we hope to continue speaking for stray animals and spreading the knowledge of it in even bigger ways.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Our project has helped reduce stray dogs in our community. We showed people how good shelters are and how happy rescued dogs can make a family. Because of our posters and talks, many now adopt instead of buy, and some neighbors bring hurt dogs to the shelter instead of chasing them away. Three dogs we met already found homes with school families, and shelters are getting more food, blankets, and helpers. Slowly, people are less afraid and more kind to strays. We hope this report keeps changing hearts so every stray dog is seen as a friend who needs love.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We raised awareness about this issue by creating large posters, engaging with community residents, and promoting our cause during school assemblies. We are grateful for their willingness to collaborate with us and speak up for stray animals; we could not have accomplished this without their contributions. At school, Mr. Jyunjie played an important role in our project. He guided us through the process, provided feedback and advice when we faced difficulties, and regularly checked our progress to help refine our plans. Furthermore, we illustrated the plight of stray animals through drawings and presentations to attract more attention to this cause. The community residents also provided valuable feedback and suggestions. Their support became the driving force for us to continue advocating for this issue. Through this collaboration, we truly realized the power of teamwork. We would like to thank everyone who helped and supported us throughout this process; your encouragement means the world to us.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

During our CyberFair project on stray dogs, we made many unexpected discoveries that deepened our understanding. One big surprise was learning that many stray dogs end up on the streets not because people are always cruel, but irresponsible to their pets, like abandoning pets when they grow older or when families move. We also discovered that there are a lot of stray dog shelters that use different ways to help dogs recover trust in humans, such as play therapy and gentle training, which may make these dogs feel happy. The biggest lesson we learned is the power of everybody working together. At first, we felt helpless seeing so many animals in need, but after talking to volunteers, we realized that even small efforts, like donating food and money, or giving them a brand new home can make their life feel easier. Another heartwarming surprise was seeing the transformation of the dogs that were rescued. Dogs that arrive scared will become playful and affectionate after receiving care, this shows us that love and patience can do and make almost anything. This project teaches us empathy, responsibility, and that anyone, even students like us, can make a real difference in our community. We hope that everyone who sees our project can give these dogs a warm heart and lend a helping hand!
