Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Linkou District, located in New Taipei City, has transformed from a traditional rural and industrial area into a rapidly developing urban community. In the past, Linkou was well known for its brick kiln industry and agricultural villages. Today, modern residential areas, schools, and commercial districts have gradually replaced many traditional industries. Despite these changes, many valuable cultural traditions still exist in the community. One of these traditions is Zijidi Opera, a form of traditional folk opera performed by local community members. It reflects the cultural history and community spirit of the people of Linkou.

2. Summary of Our Project

Our project, 'Stories of Linkou: Passing Down the Art of Zijidi Opera,' focuses on exploring and preserving the traditional folk performance culture of Zijidi Opera in the Linkou community. Zijidi Opera has long been an important part of temple festivals and community celebrations in Taiwan.

Through interviews, field research, and cultural documentation, we aim to understand the history, performance styles, costumes, music, and cultural meanings of Zijidi Opera. In addition, we hope to introduce this traditional art to younger generations through exhibitions, digital presentations, and interactive activities. By completing this project, we hope more people will learn about the cultural value of Zijidi Opera and help preserve this important local heritage.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

Currently, our school provides a well-developed digital learning environment. The school has computer classrooms and campus-wide Wi-Fi access. Each teacher also has a personal desktop computer. The students participating in this project are 5th and 6th graders. They use Chromebooks during the research process and collaborate through Google Drive to share documents, photos, and research data.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

One of the biggest challenges in our project was the lack of awareness about Zijidi Opera among younger generations. Many students had never heard of this traditional performance before starting the project.

Another challenge was collecting reliable information. Since Zijidi Opera is a traditional folk activity, many records are not available online. Therefore, we needed to conduct field visits, interview local cultural workers, and document performances through photos and videos. Despite these challenges, we worked together as a team and used digital tools to organize and present our findings.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Our project introduces the traditional folk performance of Zijidi Opera in Linkou. Through research and documentation, we hope to help more people understand this unique cultural heritage and inspire younger generations to appreciate and preserve traditional performing arts.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

This CyberFair project connects with several areas of our school curriculum. In social studies, students learned about local history, community culture, and traditional festivals. In language arts, students practiced reading, writing, and presenting their research findings. In information technology classes, students learned how to search for reliable information online, organize digital files, and create presentations. Through interviews and teamwork, students also developed communication and collaboration skills. This interdisciplinary project helped students better understand their community while improving their research and digital literacy skills.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

• Telephone and Email – to contact cultural workers and arrange interviews. • iPad – to collect research materials and write reports. • Google Drive – to store documents, photos, and videos and collaborate with teammates. • Digital Cameras and Mobile Devices – to record interviews and document performances. • Internet Research – to gather background information about traditional opera.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

During this project, we acted as ambassadors of Linkou’s traditional culture. We introduced Zijidi Opera to our classmates and teachers through presentations and exhibitions. We also shared our research results online so that more people could learn about this traditional art. By promoting Zijidi Opera, we hope to help preserve this valuable cultural heritage and inspire more young people to appreciate traditional performing arts.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Our project helps raise awareness of Zijidi Opera among students and community members. Many people in the younger generation are unfamiliar with traditional performing arts. Through this project, we helped introduce this cultural tradition to more people. We also documented stories and experiences shared by cultural workers, which helps preserve important cultural knowledge for the future.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Many community members supported our project. Local cultural workers shared their experiences and knowledge of Zijidi Opera with us through interviews. Temple staff and community organizers also helped us understand the role of traditional performances during festivals. Their support allowed us to gain deeper insights into the cultural importance of Zijidi Opera in the Linkou community.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

During this project, we discovered many interesting things about Zijidi Opera. At first, most of us were unfamiliar with this traditional folk performance. Through interviews and field visits, we learned that Zijidi Opera has been an important part of community celebrations and temple festivals for many years.

One surprising discovery was the dedication of the performers. Many of them volunteer their time to practice, prepare costumes, and perform for the community because they want to preserve this cultural tradition.

Through this project, we also learned valuable skills such as teamwork, communication, and research. More importantly, we developed a deeper appreciation for our local culture. Although this project has not yet received other awards, we hope our work will encourage more people to learn about and help preserve traditional performing arts.
