Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

In my hometown, there is an important river called the Zhuoshui River, which is like a mother nurturing the land. It brings abundant nutrients to the soil, making it fertile enough to grow high-quality crops. For example, we have nutritious black rice and guavas, which are not only delicious but also help people stay healthy and catch fewer colds.

My hometown is also home to a century-old kapok tree. Every spring, its bright red flowers bloom and sway gently in the wind, like a dancer performing gracefully. The kapok tree is useful too; for example, kapok flower tea is known for its cooling and detoxifying properties.

Every few years, there is a special Mazu tradition called “crossing the Zhuoshui River.” During this event, Mazu crosses the river and comes to our hometown to bless the people with good fortune, peace, and safety.

With so many beautiful and meaningful things, from the river and farmland to the kapok tree and local traditions, it is impossible not to love my hometown deeply.

2. Summary of Our Project

I have participated in the “Flowers in Changhua” festival, which is held every year during the Lunar New Year at Xizhou Park. During the event, I can see many colorful flowers that are carefully arranged into different shapes and designs, making the park look dazzling and beautiful.

Besides enjoying the flowers, visitors can taste delicious guavas, play fun games like mud tug-of-war and mud dodgeball, and watch various performances. These activities make the festival very exciting and enjoyable. The most special part is visiting the Retired Cattle Sanctuary, which is unique to Xizhou.

Because Xizhou Township has such a wonderful festival, we hope more people will get to know our hometown. Participating in the festival not only allows visitors to enjoy its beauty and fun activities but also helps them appreciate the culture, agriculture, and traditions of our community. It is truly a festival that shows the charm of Xizhou.

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

During the CyberFair project, children naturally faced challenges. For example, when information was hard to find or resources were limited, they sometimes felt stuck or frustrated. However, in a teamwork environment, they discussed ideas, divided tasks, and repeatedly overcame difficulties with guidance and support from their teacher. Every small step increased their confidence and helped them gradually learn how to organize information, express ideas, and assign tasks. Through this process, they not only completed the research and content organization but also understood the importance of effort and collaboration. Step by step, they accumulated achievements and successfully completed Chaoyang Elementary School’s first CyberFair project. Along the way, they experienced the joy of challenges and accomplishments and developed a deeper understanding and love for their hometown.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Through the CyberFair, we shared the special features of Xizhou with more people. At the “Flowers in Changhua” festival, we enjoyed colorful flowers and their gentle fragrance. During the “Mud Fun” event, we touched the black soil and tasted sweet guavas and fresh vegetables. This experience helped others learn about Xizhou’s attractions and also made us appreciate the charm and warmth of our hometown.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Our CyberFair project focused on introducing the special features of Xizhou Township. During the project, we learned many valuable skills, including researching, organizing information, and writing clearly in English. We also developed teamwork and communication skills by discussing ideas, dividing tasks, and supporting each other throughout the process.

We practiced important group concepts such as collaboration, task management, and problem-solving. Visiting events like the Flowers in Changhua festival and the Retired Cattle Sanctuary helped us better understand local culture, agriculture, and traditions, allowing us to connect our research with real experiences.

The project aligns with school and curriculum requirements because it integrates local history and culture, strengthens research and writing abilities, and encourages critical thinking and collaboration. Through this experience, we also discovered the importance of each member’s role in contributing to the team. Additionally, using online learning tools made it easier to access resources, share information, and present our findings creatively. Overall, completing the project gave us a strong sense of accomplishment and a deeper appreciation for our hometown.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

In this CyberFair project, we used a variety of tools to collect information, including computer software, interviews, libraries, books, and newspapers. Computer software allowed us to quickly search for information and organize it efficiently. Interviews let us hear first-hand experiences from local residents and elders, providing stories that cannot be found in books. Libraries and books offered reliable historical background and knowledge, while newspapers helped us stay updated on current events and community news. Each tool had its own advantages, and together they allowed us to present the unique features of Chaoyang Village comprehensively. For me, the most valuable tool was interviews, because speaking with residents not only gave me first-hand information but also helped me understand the culture and lifestyle of my hometown more deeply. This made my knowledge of Chaoyang more vivid and strengthened my emotional connection to my community.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

During the preparation for the CyberFair competition, students often needed to actively ask their families and local residents for information. Through conversations and interviews, they collected valuable materials about local culture and history. After school or on weekends, the children spent time talking with elders and villagers, asking about Xizhou’s agricultural features, local activities, and everyday life stories.

This process not only helped students obtain valuable first-hand information, but also taught them how to ask meaningful questions, listen carefully to others’ experiences, and develop their communication and interview skills. At the same time, as villagers shared their knowledge, they gradually learned about the students’ efforts in participating in the CyberFair competition and promoting the culture of Xizhou. Many community members expressed support and encouragement for the students’ learning.

Through these interactions, students gained a deeper understanding of their hometown, while the relationship between the school and the community also became closer. This collaboration created a positive atmosphere in which people work together to care about local culture and educational development.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Participating in the CyberFair project brought many positive impacts to the school, families, and the local community. For the school, the project encouraged students to learn through research, teamwork, and real-life experiences. Students improved their abilities in information searching, organizing materials, communication, and problem-solving, which also strengthened their confidence and motivation to learn.

For families, the project created opportunities for parents and grandparents to participate in students’ learning. Through conversations and interviews, students asked their family members about local history, agriculture, and traditions. This interaction not only provided valuable first-hand information but also strengthened the connection between family members and students’ learning experiences.

For the community, local residents had the chance to share their knowledge and stories about Xizhou’s culture, agriculture, and traditions. They gradually understood the students’ efforts to introduce their hometown to others and gave support and encouragement. Through this collaboration, the relationship between the school and the community became closer, creating a positive environment where everyone works together to preserve local culture and support education.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

During the process of completing the CyberFair project, we received support and assistance from many people, and we would like to express our sincere gratitude to them. First, we would like to thank our teachers, who patiently guided us throughout the project. They helped us understand how to search for information, organize our materials, and complete each part of the project step by step. Their encouragement and advice helped us overcome many difficulties.

We are also very grateful to our parents and family members. When we encountered problems or had difficulty finding information, they provided suggestions and shared their knowledge about local life, agriculture, and culture. Their support made it easier for us to complete our research.

In addition, we would like to thank the local residents and elders of Xizhou and Chaoyang Village. They kindly accepted our interviews and shared valuable stories and experiences about the community. Their contributions helped us better understand our hometown.

With the support of teachers, families, and community members, we were able to successfully complete this project and proudly introduce the unique culture and features of Xizhou Township.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

During the process of completing the CyberFair project, we made many interesting discoveries and learned valuable lessons. One surprising experience was realizing how rich and diverse the culture of Xizhou Township is. By visiting places such as Xizhou Park and participating in activities like the Flowers in Changhua festival and the Mud Fun event, we discovered how local traditions, agriculture, and community life are closely connected.

Another interesting discovery came from our interviews with local residents and elders. They shared stories about farming, local festivals, and the history of the village that we could not find in books or on the internet. These conversations helped us understand our hometown in a deeper and more meaningful way.

During the project, we also learned that research can sometimes be difficult. Finding information was not always easy, and we occasionally felt frustrated. However, by working together, asking for help, and continuing to try, we gradually solved the problems. This experience taught us the importance of teamwork, patience, and persistence. In the end, completing the project brought us a great sense of achievement and pride in our hometown.
