1. Description of Our Team

This team consist four students of 11th grade of SMA 8 Yogyakarta. We are…Abdul as our project leader. He’s a 17 years old tall boy. Many girls said that he’s handsome. He’s also designing our website for this project, and he did a good job for us. Next, he’s also a boy named Theo. Theo is our member who uploading and searching things about Doors to Diplomacy project. He’s also 17 years old now. And then Dolorosa as the editor of our articles. She’s 17 years old girl and has a good skill in English. The last is Laretna who’s also has the same age as other members. She searches information for the contents of our website. She’s a diligent member. We joined as a team because we thought that each of us has various abilities and they complete one another. With a high solidarity, we also hope that it can unite us and build a great team.

Actually we have many things to do like courses, music rehearsal, organizations, school tasks, etc. So we did this project in spare time like free time at school, after school, and at home in holidays. That’s why we took a long time to finish it. Beside that, each of us has different activities that made it a little bit difficult to match time for doing this project.

2. Summary of Our Project

“Survive Nature by Your Hands!” means that we, through this project, want to show you how big is our caring to build new great and green world by doing small things in our place that could persuade readers to preserve nature. We realize that earth is getting older and nature had been broken by un-responsible people. They just keep exploiting nature sources for present prosperity without realizing the impact of future life, by illegal logging or bomb using for fishing for example, that finally damaged the balance of nature, so that caused nature damage.

The beauty of Indonesian nature resources that usually called by “Zamrud Khatulistiwa” (Equator Emerald) has also being threatened. Plant that grows in various climates in Indonesia, and overflows sea products has reduced because human acts.

Seeing developing countries, make us realized that the progress of technology in the country not always give positive effect to its environment. Pollution comes from some modern things such as motored vehicles. And it really contributes to global warming. Besides those things has something as a purpose for technology development. The most damage cause of global warming is greenhouse effect, this effect, even worse plus the reducing of ozone might causes worse global warming in our earth.

Then, we talk about health problems happening around us, and also an interesting alternative medical treatment exist. Finally we concluded some possible things to do that might be helpful for the nature. We think that we have to protect nature by doing small things around us first, we sure that at last we will save world nature.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:2-3

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:2-3

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

We need much time to finish this project, but each member has their own activities that made it harder for us to gather and discuss things. However we use our time together as good as we can so that we could finish this project. Slow internet connection also being barrier for us in gathering information. Moreover there are some members who don’t have an internet connection at home.

In doing this project, we have to use English to write contents of our website. We’re still learning this language so that we should work hard to translate the articles. So finally we helped each other to translate our articles into good English articles.

When we tried to look for some information through various media, it felt so hard because restricted source of the articles.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

By this project, we can develop our knowledge about national and international problem. We can train ourselves to find out the solution for solving problems. Also we can appreciate each self-interest.

6. How did your activities and research for this Doors to Diplomacy Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

All contents in this web are talking about health and environment, and it’s related to geography and biology subject at school. But our articles didn’t exist in curriculum guidelines, we only choosing some interesting topics that we could provide in this website.

In doing this project, we learn to do our best work in a small group. Until finally we learn to share, especially in gathering ideas, teamwork, and the hardest thing is learning to be patient. For example when we’re trying to translating articles into English and needed patient in thinking/brainstorming. Even more, in finishing this project, we needed so many times. We should try to be patient until this project was over.

Through this project, we concluded that diplomacy is how clever and deft we are when we have to solve problems around us. We, directly learn it through how we overcame barriers and obstacles during finishing this project.

We also got some new knowledge especially about health and environmental issues in other countries because we have to read things that we would be produced.

Materials of our project meanly get from the internet because it’s easier than other ways. But this thought basically depends on each person.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your Doors to Diplomacy project?

We did this project by 4 laptops, which were Acer Travelmate 2420, Axioo M54V, A*Note Centurion, Toshiba Portege. We used 3 laptops for editing articles and the rest for designing our website. These tools were belonging to us. We also used some computer software to design our website, named Macromedia Dreamweaver MX. We used Microsoft Word software for typing our articles. Our website contains pictures and we edited them by Adobe Photoshop. Also we used Macromedia Flash.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your Doors to Diplomacy project both on-line and in person.

We adopt “Nature and Human : Friend or Foe?” as our web title. It means that nature has been damaged by human activity. Are we still a partner in this life? We want to tell how the damaging of nature happen and what is the impact of this damaged nature to our health. Trough this criticism, we hope the readers or the visitors of our web can realize the damaged nature and begin to fix it for the future need. Short way, we can say, its purpose is for persuading people to keep our nature.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

It is unimaginable. We are sure this web will make people realize how important we treat the nature well. Those who visit this web and read it carefully will realize whether we treat the nature as our friend or foe?

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Some journalists come to see our project. They helped us to socialize the project. We do not yet how far their articles can change people mind. It is long process, but at least we did something to nature, to make it as our friend.
