Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Our school is located in Songhua Community, Shou’an Town, Pujiang County, Chengdu, Sichuan Province. You can take a bus at Chengdu New South Gate Bus Station, via highway of Cheng (du) - Ya (An) for about 40 minutes, and get off at Shou’an exit stop, turn to the west and go along for about 5 km, then you can find our school. Our school locates between the big and small Wumian Hill, close to the Linxi River, about 20 km to Pujiang County. The fast track between Chengdu and Pujiang under construction is only 1 km away from our school. When the project is completed, it will become more convenient your coming to our school.

2. Summary of Our Project

Pujiang county is situated in the southwest of the Chengdu, the key entrance to Tibet and Yunnan as the traffic hinge and goods collection and dispatch cener. Pujiang is the ecological demonstration region, has enjoyed “Chengdu park, the green Pujiang” reputation. Temples in Pujiang are built on the mountain. The temple is both as an excellent place to meditate and tour. The temple fair could advance rapid development of local economy.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:21-50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:2-3

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:4-6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

Our school uses broadband LAN. The computer classroom is busy for many classes’ lessons, so it is hardly to use it. Only on weekend we can use it. However, the internet speed is slow and not everyone can use the computers (the students who collect western story are many). We are also very happy to use the internet. Some students go to other places including teachers’ homes and school’s executive offices to write stories.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Firstly, it is a tight schedule. In autumn, the students get up to study morning lessons at 6:50 AM and finish the night lessons at 9 PM. Mr. Liu is not only a head teacher but also responsible for the jobs of school’s executive offices. So we can only use the time before dinner to do the works. Sometimes we go to school to finish the jobs on weekends. So all works we need to do are completed little by little. Secondly, current Gion Temple was built in 1994. The old Gion Temple was no longer in existence. We asked the aged about the temple. First we asked our family and then found the people who were most likely to know the history of it. Fortunately, we found an aged people living around the temple and gained the past story of the temple. Thirdly, collect the materials. We choose Gion Temple as our theme in this year. While our school is not far from the temple and we can interview and get the materials at ordinary times, the fairs are all in summer holiday. We can gather and visit the fairs several times in holidays.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

The temple is our country’s art treasures library and a symbol of our long history and culture. The temple is not only related with the religion but also well preserves cultural relics of various dynasties. The combination of temple and traditional palace architectures expresses distinct national styles and folk characteristics. The temple cultures have penetrated our life such as astronomy, geography, architecture, drawing, calligraphy, sculpture, music, dancing, cultural relics, fairs, and customs. The annual temple fairs are picked up steam all over the country. The cultural atmosphere around the country is enriched and local tourism is developed by fairs.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

1. Cultivate the group spirit of students; 2. Build up their capacity of observing life and collecting information; 3. Broaden their horizons and make them realize the temple itself, the life between the temple and people, and the temple’s acceleration for local economy; 4. Promote students working on culture hard and mastering more knowledge

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

We used telephone, digital camera,USB,computer and the network to make our website.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

The community gets a more particular knowledge of our school and Qianxiangwancai though the activity. It is made them understand that we also pay attention to Gion Temple except them. Focus on Gion Temple is on behalf of focus on local culture and economic development.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

We have learned that how to share out the work and cooperate with one another, express our question in a proper way, make interviewees answer well, talk with people and reorganize materials through this study. Many people included teachers and students in school and also our interviewees have browsed our old webpages such as Pujing Rice Flower, Pujing Tea Industry, Pujing Kiwi Fruit and Sunset Glow. They give us high rating for our International DigiChina Awards in recent years. We are proud of this and foster a good and healthy school image. When many people see our Gion Temple webpage posted on internet, they will get more information of Pujiang, pay more attention to Gion Temple and other temples in Pujiang and yearn for Pujiang’s graceful ecological environment. Many tourists will visit. Someday, some people may come to Songhua and Pujiang and discuss tourism projects. In this way, our study will make contributions to Pujiang’s economic development.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

The aged in community gave us the best help and supplied much information about Gion Temple. The digital camera contributed a great share in our interview.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

Though our interview, we find that the temple is a good place for countrymen, especially for the aged in village. They calm their mind and take a leisurely life there. It is very good for their physical and mental health. The fairs are a grand meeting setting the tourism, trade and culture activities in one. The local economy is promoted by the fairs.
