Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Yonghe district is located in the southwest part of New Taipei City. It was called “Yonghe Shi” before the reorganization of the various counties in Taiwan.

Yonghe is a city where traditional and modern ways of life happily coexist. Amongst the crowded markets and narrow alleys, you will also find modern supermarkets, department stores and shopping malls. This is a city where innovation and tradition are in perfect balance.

Located near our school, the Wu He New Village is one of the best preserved Da Chen communities in Taiwan. Due to its close proximity to Chi-Jen School, many of our students are descendants of the original Da Chen refugees who came to Taiwan in 1955.

As this year marks the 60th anniversary of their retreat from mainland China, we feel that it is a good opportunity to promote and celebrate the rich culinary and artistic traditions of Da Chen Island.

2. Summary of Our Project

In February, 1955, 30000 people retreated from Da Chen Island in Zhejiang to Keelung Port in Taiwan. Upon arrival in Taiwan they were sent to various ‘Loyal People Villages’ all over Taiwan. The Wu He New Village next to our school is one such village. Many students in our school are descended from the Da Chen refugees; yet, they are mostly unaware of their rich cultural heritage . For example, students might know about Zhou’s famous Sticky Rice Cakes, but don’t know that they originated from Da Chen. The aim of this project is to introduce the Wu He New Village and the culture of Da Chen to our students. Bibliography page : site 1 - site 2 -

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

From the initial discussion, information gathering, organization, editing, interviewing to brief presentation to other classes, we felt very difficult to settle down everything due to lack of experience. To make things harder, our teacher asked us to make English version of our research for the international Cyberfair Exhibition.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

We have learnt not only the skills for organizing, gathering information, but the contribution quietly given by people and their passion to local cultures.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Language domain: In every discussion, report and feedback, we encouraged ourselves of creative thinking and active discovering and researching, and to use our abilities of expression, communication and sharing information during interviews. This is also our first attempt to join International Cyberfair Exhibition with additional works of writing in English, so we have our English skills greatly improved as well. General domain: We went to other classes for brief presentation and learnt how to plan, organize and realize plans. We also learnt respect of team works which will become our foundation of life education.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

The students interviewd the people in person. The visitors came to school to conduct a demo class. They told us that they were happy to know that that young generations are interested in and willing to record their traditions and customs.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Students in our school know the Wu He New Village, but they don't know the cultures and the people in the village. This time, we had the people in our school to teach them the beading embroidery. They came out from the village and we walked into it. Some students even try to search more information about the stories in the village on the Internet.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Mr. Zhou, who showed us how to make the sticky rice step by step. Hu's sisters, who showed us the beautiful dresses and cheongsams they made. They also conducted 4 demo classes of beading embroidery. Ms. Zhang, who cooked the Da Chen cuisines and told us stories about the food from Da Chen.
