Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Our school is located in Song-San district of Taipei city. Established in 1936, it's a typical metropolitan school. Although we have a big playground, there is no gymnasium or indoor space for students to exercise. The area where a petanque game is played is called a 'terrain'. In 2010, we completed a Pétanque court and we have our first Pétanque team. Our Pétanque team win lots of trophies, and we let more people know about it!

2. Summary of Our Project

Pétanque is a sport which has been neglected all the time. The number of Pétanque teams in schools is limited. It’s unlike basketball or soccer that there are always star players or been broadcasted. However, its effects of exercise are not different from others’.

Pétanque is a form of boules where the goal is to throw hollow metal balls as close as possible to a small wooden ball called a jack, while standing inside a starting circle with both feet on the ground. During the last 3 months, we searched the internet for the information about Pétanque, interviewed important persons, we designed different questionnaires, and we even learned how to play Pétanque. We really appreciate our advisors, who instruct us how to finish the project and how to build web pages.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

1. Creation of the theme When designing the questionnaire and the interview questions, at first everyone thought of ten questions and referred to past Cyberfair project questions, but there were repetitions, so everyone had to summarize them together and it took a long time.

2. Taking more time to organize the data

Sometimes there is too much data that has be looked through one by one and the wrong ones have to be deleted; these things require a lot of patient help from everyone. After interviewing the teachers and principal, the recordings have to be transcribed. Since we typed very slowly, sometimes the teachers talked a lot, and we have to listen to it over and over again, taking a long time.

3. Difficulties in recording

When typing reflections or recording issues, sometimes the writing for the records is too ugly making us unable to type the reflections. Now we have to look at the focus records, and think about it again before writing, and avoid the same problems.

4.Interview skill is not good

At first when we interviewed the principal and the teachers, we were scared of asking questions, but later we got used to it, and this made us excited again. When we interviewed the rhythm band teacher, we became more confident, and we were also not afraid when asking other rhythm band teachers over the years.

5. Falling behind

Sometimes maybe the current work is not complete, and the teacher has more assignments. Because of time crunch, before the work was done we had to conduct interviews, or even using our own time tom make up the progress. But if everyone is willing to work well, the work would definitely be complete. Sometimes, for morning self-study or lunch break meeting times, some people can’t come or come late, this would cause us to fall behind.

6. Time management

Some people also participated in the school’s public service teams like the traffic control team, so we need to quickly finish our own work in order to prevent …

5. Our Project Sound Bite

We hope that the history of Petanque can be comprehensively constructed from the mouths of each interview subject. We hope to let more people learn about Petanque, its history and the development, and various Petanque activities and competitions.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Language Arts : The language ability is the most important subject during the research. It applies to the interview questions, research report, and analytical diagrams. Every time we wrote the report, our writing skills improved.

Mathematics: When we were conducting statistical analysis for the survey, we had to count the number of subjects, calculated the percentage, and trained our ability to read the charts. Thus, our math ability was improved.

Health and Physical Education: As we interviewed more people, we found out more about Petanque. We played Petanque ourselves, and enjoyed it very much.

Arts and Humanities: For webpage editing, we learned computer skills, and webpage layout and design.

Science and Technology: We searched information on the Internet and used various software for writing or webpage editing; thus, we improved our IT skills.

Social Studies: The main challenge of Petanque is to control it. Beginners usually feel frustrated, but all Petanque players persisted in practices. Their determination is our model.

Integrative Activities: During this project, we all kept positive interaction in cooperation and collaboration. The sense of accomplishment is our main motivation.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Software Windows 7: Search for relevant information Google Chrome: Compiling text documents, reviews and feedback for our research. Microsoft Word 2010: Creating charts for our questionnaire results Microsoft Excel 2010: Creating charts for our questionnaire results Namo Web Editor 5.5: website editing ACDsee: photos browsing Hardware Dell Computer: Digitalization f our research report HP laser printer: Print relevant research data Nikon digital camera: Record the progress of our research IPAD: Record the progress of our research

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We’ll bring the sport of Petanque to the public with our project, since it is not well known to the sport society, even that someone ever heard of Petanque before. After discussing the research outline together and ascertaining the research objectives, we started collecting information on Petanque, focusing on the topic for reporting and relevant people involved. Next, we conducted the interviews, recorded, and compiled data in person. We know that many people care about Petanque, and have devoted to promote this sport.

In order to complete this Cyberfair project, we covered the history of Petanque, established the interview plans and questions, for people including the principal, current players, and current teachers. We hope that the history of Petanque can be comprehensively constructed from the mouths of each interview subject. We hope to let more people learn about Petanque, its history and the development, and various Petanque activities and competitions. We know that many people care about Petanque, and have devoted to promote this sport.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

?The influence on us:

We experienced a four-month production process involving a lot of processes, such as discussion, interviewing, recording, and sharing. We learned how to use many software and hardware, such as Excel, digital cameras, camcorders. We rarely use these in daily life, so this was a great opportunity. The influence on us was that through this research, we can better understand the importance of division of labor and cooperation. When students from different classes work hard together in the computer classroom, we can get to know more classmates, and it made us better friends!

?Influence on the locale:

For this Cyberfair project, in the data collection process, we used interviews and questionnaires in hopes of receiving suggestions and opinions for the Petanque team. We hope to give these opinions to everyone by creating a comprehensive Petanque webpage so that everyone can see it, and everyone can get to know Petanque

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

All the text in the website has been reported and summarized by the team members. The interviews are cited in the project webpage after consent from interviewees. If the website cites relevant literature and data, the citations or relevant website addresses are listed to maintain the rights of the original authors. In order to fully present the Cyberfair project webpage, we not only interviewed, took photos, videos, and sound recordings, but also referred to books, journals, and online data in the library. In order to maintain intellectual property rights, we carefully used photos, images, music, and text content. Most of the pictures on the webpage were taken by the teachers or students; citations have received interviewee consent.
