Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Shangyi is located in the northwestern part of Hebei and west of Zhangjiakou City, east to Zhangbei, south to Wanquan. Shangyi County has rich land resources and unique climate, is suitable for high-quality vegetable cultivation and crop nutrient accumulation and quite appropriate for the development of livestock breeding. What’s more, Shangyi also features unique tourism resources and eco-tourism, owning three types of tour, including ethnic customs, cultural history, and ecological tourism. Convenient transportation conditions and communication, ample electric power, and abundant labor resources all create a favorable investment environment for open-end Shangyi.

2. Summary of Our Project

Chinese dough figurine art is rooted in national intangible cultural art, and it is also the world's unique art. Now, with the development of the times, the dough figurine has gone through a tortuous process of ups and downs, spontaneous learning figurines this traditional art is facing disappear and rheology. But it is a kind of most popular handicraft art in China, it is also a best carrier for the construction of spiritual civilization, its historical value increased gradually, therefore, through the pursuit spirit of the artists and the exploration of traditional culture, we hope we can do our best for preservation, development and inheritance of dough figurine.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

This is the first time for us to take part in the website contest. We are nervous but without any experience. So at first we didn't know how to start. It is said that Ms. Li has tutored students in three contests. Then we released a lot. After the group meeting and training from Ms. Li, we determined the topic. Then we did the division of work in detail. We started the job like this. The classmates collected some pictures, searched some materials and visited the Sheep Competing Games on site. Then we made a frame for the website. Based on this we collected the materials in different types and designed the structure. By more than one month’s cooperation, our materials were almost enough. Then we started to put the contents into the website structure. When we finished the initial version, the tutor commented that although it had a good structure, it was not good to look. The color match was unreasonable. Some hyperlinks had problems. The main page was not clear. In the following steps of producing it was smooth with the guidance of the tutors. With the help of the tutors, we did some modifications. So the website looked more beautiful, the contents more specified and the target more clear. At the beginning of November we uploaded the finished structure and content to the Internet. We are more relaxed. Everyone had a feeling of achievement. All in all, in the engagement of DigiChina we made our own pages of the website, which made us get a lot.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

By the special study, we know about the development and current situation of dough figurine making. The classmates made some promotion inside and outside the campus, which encouraged more classmates join us. This taught students with the ability to imagine, love to create by their own hands. By this activity we not only promote the dough figurine making, but also indicates that China's successors in the cause of the dough figurine, so that more people are fond of dough figurine, love to learn dough figurine, and develop it.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

We were focusing on dough figurines making and its craftsman in this subject webpage competition, running on the subject of “Dough Figurine, a handicraft blooms in fingertip” , highlighting the format of culture art, dough figurines. The study not only involved in such fields as history, geography, art, culture, computer and social, but also combined with local teaching methods, introducing Dough Figurine into class. The vivid dough figure made by teacher Li stand in silence but speak about the beautiful story, which expressed people's longing for a better life. School held a dough figurines Competition based on our subject study. These accomplishments can be done by the help and support of many people including teachers, students.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

It's our pleasure to have students and teachers to know about dough figurines on our website. We acted as spokespersons to publicize traditional art, let more people know about dough figurines and love it by intruding Li Xueli’s constant pursuit of dough figurines, and committing to work toward protection of traditional cultural art.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Our computer skill has been greatly improved in this practical activity, especially the methods and techniques of the production of web page provided a huge benefit to us. We found that teacher Li has spent 10 years to study dough figurines, and she dedicated her energy and youth to the development of dough figurines. She is the voice of dough figurines development, such as, she teaches art and craft lesson in school, during summer or winter vacation, she opened free training classes to teach poor students. Through having the chance to talk with teacher Li, we first recognized the importance of development and preservation on the heritage of dough figurines. And more we know how to cooperate in harmony with people, to understand others point of view, and to respect others. We also learned from teacher Li that interests is the best teacher to success. Let's cheering for teacher Li, and also cheering for dough figurines history of aesthetic values.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

eacher showed us a large number of excellent works of previous competition. We were hesitate in fear we may not get it right. The instructor said: 'since you form a team, it is necessary to unite, as long as unity, there are no insurmountable difficulties.' Yes, we have to work hard to learn more knowledge to enrich our minds, increase self-confidence, and we have to work hard to strengthen our team building, so that our team can be developed. When in trouble, we should believe in ourselves, firm the goal, in addition to strengthen unity and cooperation, through learning dough figurine, we will also promote the thought of 'help each other, learn from each other, form a cohesive force' for the students who participate in our project.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

We didn’t know about dough figurines before joining in competition. One day, we went to teacher Li’s office, we saw a lot of graphic works of dough figurines, and we can't help wondering her adept skill. In her hand, by kneading, rolling, the ball of dough turned into fine art, she granted them the life and spirit. They are of more artistic works. Teacher Li's deft fingers create various featured works; it is the perfect mix of plastic arts and handicraft. Dough figurines is also a kind of commodity, its collectible value and history value are very noticeable. We hope that Dough figurines can continue to pass through our conducting propaganda.
