Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Tong'an Elementary School is located in Fenyuan Township, Changhua County, Taiwan. Located on the east side of the Bagua Mountains, it is about 200 meters above sea level and belongs to hilly land. Administratively under the jurisdiction of Fenyuan Township, Changhua County. The school was established on April 1, 1922, with the name of the Fenyuan Public School Tonganliao Branch. In order to make it easier for the students to study, the residents of Tong'an Village and Zhonglun Village jointly created Tong'an, which has become the second primary school with a long history in Fenyuan Township, and has many alumni since the Japanese era. Before the Restoration (Japanese Occupation Era), there were 17 sessions, and it has entered 99 years of history. In recent years, due to the low birthrate problem and the increase of new communities in the branch campus, in 2012, there were only 30 students in the main school and 51 students in the branch campus.

2. Summary of Our Project

Fenyuan Baozang Temple is the religious center of Fenyuan area, with historical significance and social welfare functions. This year coincides with the 350th anniversary of the founding of the temple. Many activities are held and a series of antiquities are displayed. By making a special topic of Fenyuan Baozang Temple, students can understand the history of Fenyuan, architectural knowledge, and the relationship between Baozang Temple and the community, and let the world Know the local culture of Fenyuan Baozang Temple.

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

We didn't know that Baozang Temple was so crowded that it was difficult for us to take the photos we needed. Another point is that the chairman of Baozang Temple is the subject of our interviews. There are too many proper terms about temples in the interview content, which not only makes it difficult for us to understand, but also encounters many difficulties in sorting out the materials.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Studying this topic allows us to know that there is a temple in the community that continues to help people. Baozang Temple not only inherits culture, but also is a center of belief and a unit that gathers the strength of kind-hearted people from all walks of life. Teachers and elders in the community know that we have given us a lot of support in our study of Baozang Temple and hope that we can learn the spirit of helping others.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

The theme of researching Baozang Temple is matched with the unit of the school's social curriculum about knowing hometown. Through interviews, photos and Internet searches, we learn knowledge and skills beyond books.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Scanner .Desktop computer and Laptop .Projector .Smartphone .Digital Camera .Cloud storage .Libraries .Museums

When it came to acquiring equipment and tools needed, we were very fortunate, as we were already in possession of several hardware items that became invaluable towards our completion of the project, such as Laptop computers and art tablets. The school also lent a us hand by lending us one of their state-of-the-art video cameras for recording purposes. These tools came in handy on more occasions than one. The laptop computers made the conversion and organization process of material information a lot easier than it would have been and carried a number of useful software that helped in their own way, from image processing to content production, such as Photoshop and Lightroom. Smartphones also played a huge role in the completion of the project, as it allowed teammates to stay connected not only to each other, but also to the latest information and progress. All it took was the push of a few buttons and new and essential information can immediately be shared and received by all members of the group, no matter where they are. The laptop and smartphone proved to be extremely useful items for all they have accomplished in link with the thematic project.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We introduce Baozang Temple to school students through campus promotion activities. At the same time, we also use the production of web pages to promote the history, culture and good deeds of Baozang Temple to let netizens around the world know.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

With the progress of the times, the younger generation will gradually stop going to temples. For our students, the temple still has a sacred and inaccessible sense of distance. This is why the elders will be very curious about why we took Baozang Temple as the research topic, but also because of our research, students began to feel that the temple is not so far away and scary, and the temple is not just a place for people to worship. It turns out that there are so many cultures in temples, and they usually continue to help people in need in the community. Temples are places where people can calm down and make people willing to give.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

For this study, we invited the director of the Changhua County Cultural Bureau and the director of Baozang Temple to be our interviewees, as well as the teachers of the school and the parents of the students who gave us a lot of guidance and assistance during the research process. We are very moved and grateful .
