Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Our local communty is located in Romania , a Central European Country. Situated in the center of the depression with the same name, at an altitude of 360-380 m, Radauti has established its hearth in the confluence angle of Suceava with Sucevita. The oblong form of the dumps (NV-SE) favors the conduct of the wind blowing in this way, and the numerous water surfaces introduce some changes in the normal way of meteorological elements. The average annual temperature is 6.9°C; the average annual temperature of July is 18.2°C and of January -5.3°C. The average annual rainfall is 643.6mm. The clime is temperate. At first sight, an opened territory, the area of the town called Radauti is well hidden in a natural way, by the swampy land that surrounds it. This natural protection, associated with the vast possibilities of practicing the agriculture and cattle rising, have made Radauti, from the ancient times, an adequated place for living (the oldest signs found are from 7000 years ago). The first document that certifies the town dates from 1392, where Radauti was mentioned as the village of Radomir, making part of his properties, from which, as some versions say, it is supposed to have derived the name of the town. Other opinions say that the settlement has its origins in old times and the name “Radauti” comes from the latin word Rottacenum, given by the soldiers to name the roman garrison in Siret. Under slave influences we assist at a distortion of the original name Rottacenum and its conversion to Radauti, as it appears in later documents.

2. Summary of Our Project

Water is known to be really important to humans and all its properties influence the quality of life. Our group decided to deepen the informations related to the specific heat of water and its influence on the climate. Water has a high specific heat. This means that in order to increase the temperature of the water, it has to absorbs a lot of heat per unit mass. The influence of the specific heat of water on the climate is explained as the fact that having a high value, water can minimizes temperature changes, that help especially in regulating weather and climate in general. The land cools faster than the ocean from the moment on which the sun sets and the slowly cooling water can release heat of the nearby ground during the night. Meaning, in the cold season the water warms the earth, and in the hot season The water cools it. Of course, this influence is the most visible in coastal areas, but on a global average, it affects the whole the planet.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:not sure

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

We use the school's WiFi and it works really well, however we did have some problems with it and we had to use the Hotspot button for it to work.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

A problem that we had to overcome was the fact that we forgot our password and we couldn't remember it. However one of our teammates remembered, eventually the password and we continued the project.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Our project was popularised by us presenting it to the teachers from our school! We also added the narrative summary of the project for the school's magazine so that everyone can be informed about it! The project meant a lot for them because they were informed about a lot of important things such as 'Specific Heat'

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Our project has fitted in really good! We presented it to the school's staff and they were really impressed about it! We also improved our English skills and the physics knowledge. Even though it was a bit harder to get used with the computer and the rules of the site, we managed to finnish it. The Internet usage for teaching and learning was a really good and exciting idea and way more effective than traditional methods.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

The information tools that we used were from the physics classes, books, the internet and the library. These tools helped us to complete our CyberFair project and to increase our intelligence. Our most valuable tools were the internet and the school's library.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We found out about this project from our Physics teacher. She presented it to us and introduced us to all the details. From that moment, we knew that we had to participate too. Our first step was finding a suitable subject to write about. We needed a little bit of time to decide what would be the best choice so we exchanged email adresses and communicated with each other when needed. Once we have chosen our subject, all we had to do was finding ideal information and then translate it where it was requested. In order to make good work, we talked mainly with our Physics teacher and English teacher. Our team made it possible to talk as much as we could in person because nothing beats an one on one talk, right? However, we also had to call each other to clarify different stuff.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

The Impact of our project on the community was positive. Everyone was amazed about the detailed informations and about how much time we spent on it. We presented it to the school's staff and also published it in the school's newspaper.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

After a short while since starting the project, our school principal found out and he made sure that we understood that whenever we needed any help, we could ask it from him and he would make sure we would recieved it. He spared us from his classes and gave us so much time to work on the project. We also asked our IT teacher to revise our Web page. Together, we made our page much better than expected and we also learned different things from him.We want to thank both our supervisors for the help they offered us and we will remain forever grateful and in their debt.
